I’m not big on words, and to be honest reading endless forum threads just bores me. A quote I saw the other day is very relevant, I think “Saturation of information is the enemy of knowledge” and I think that basically sums up my thoughts on the matter. I look for the things that interest me, go straight to the heart of what I’m after, look up tutorials, and start doing. Here’s a link to the latest entry in the Seascapes Forum, which explains a little more about how to sell your work, I find it illuminating, since I’ve never been very good at promoting myself or my work. Bubblemail me if you’d like to be a “featured artist” and which photo you’d like to have included and why. Bubblemail me if you’ve got any suggestions you’d like to keep secret for the moment, Please leave comments here or in the forum if you’d like to get feedback on your work or the Group.

Hi All; For those of you that Fave’d Pounding Maui Surf re-fav it, because I replaced the entry. The original had a tilted horizon (something I’m a real stickler about :-)), and I just noticed it when I put it on my desktop as a screen saver. Cheers. G.

Splash was featured in the Top Ten in All About Water this morning before heading off to work. I was on a high, what a start to my day! On my return from work I’m reading a BM from Rosalie saying Splash was featured on RB Home Page. I was not believing what I was reading, thinking it had to be a mistake, until I start reading all the wonderful comments from all of you…excitingly giving me goosebumps! Thank you to each and every one of you! Whoever would have thought this could happen to someone reluctantly joining RB approx 6 months ago, thinking her work was not up to scratch. Now, how high do you reckon that cloud is that I’m dancing on and for how long for? A Special thank you to Rosalie for encouraging me to join RB in the first place and another special thanks to John Pitman who gave me the desire to visit Meltams Pools where Splash was taken. THANK YOU RED BUBBLE!

Held in honour of Michael Peterson (MP) considered the best surfer of Kirra of all time. Taken from Wikipedia but i cant get the link working: Michael Peterson (born 24 September 1952), known as MP, is an Australian surfer. He was among the best Australian surfers in the early to mid 1970s, noted for his deep tube riding skill, especially at Kirra on the Gold Coast. He was Australian champion in 1972 and 1974 and won many other major surfing competitions. Schizophrenia (only eventually diagnosed) and drugs cut short his career and his surfing became the stuff of legend. Many of the details of Peterson’s life remained obscure until Sean Doherty’s biography MP: The Life of Michael Peterson was published in 2004 (on which this article is primarily based). This year he was present in the commentary box and made the presentation. My photos from the competion can be found here / MP in the flesh.

I went down to Winkipop (near Bell’s Beach) yesterday because I heard about a whale sighting. No whales but massive surf. I just kept shooting away as each set of massive waves rolled in. My image “Some Days are Diamonds” has generated a great response, including a few comments as I’ve seen on other images wondering how I created them so I figured I ‘d put together a journal about capturing images from the water! First of let’s have a look at the tools of the trade; I use a Canon G9 Powershot, not the flashest camera but it does the trick in the water. It lacks a bit of speed it is just over a second or so between pushing the button and the image being taken. It has been great for my photography, I get one shot per wave, no holding down the button and picking the best image later, timing is everything! I house the little machine in a Canon Water Housing attached to my wrist with an arm strap and my trusty pair of fins! Next getting out can be a bit of a challenge cause these big things often lurk just below the surface and they are really hard if you misjudge and get pounded onto then, fortunately I have avoided this so far! Once I’m out there I rely very heavily on the trusty fins to ensure that can get under waves, battle the currents and of course get out the way of surfboard quickly. I’ve only had a couple of close calls where I’ve lost these going under a wave, makes for a long swim in! Fitness plays a big part and you need to know you limits, the ocean commands respect and must be given respect in return. I don’t go out on days like this (although i would like to get fitter and give it a go!) I spend most of my time chasing this little man around out there helping him surf so we I manage to get wet most mornings of the week. This is Josh! Going under waves is always fun and creates some cool images, I love the way the air bubbles catch the light! Now there are a few hazards out there and you need to watch out for fins – they bite! However getting in nice and close does have its advantages, you can get some really great images! Now I hope that nothing with fins ever looks at me like this, although there was one day when I had a scare but I try not to think about that! At the end of day its a wonderful world out there and you can capture some fantastic images! Thanks for looking and I hope to bring you a whole heap more! Cheers, / Paul
