Gia Carangi was a shooting star...quite literally! This photo was from my very first photo shoot with Gia, for Vogue, July 1978 (the shoot date). The image is somewhat soft and grainy (due to it’s being a large blowup of a small image and because I worked to emphasize the grain Gia quickly rose to super star status as a model. But, just a few years later she became addicted to drugs and her life began a downward spiral. I worked with Gia only in 1978 and 1979. She was always lovely…full of life. full of fun and unpredictably spontaneous. Gia was one of, perhaps, two or three of the most inventive models I worked with in some fifty years of photograhing women. By inventive I mean that she would adapt to a situation and cast herself in a role that fit the shoot. If you look at photos of Gia by different fashion photographers you can see how she would take on a persona to fit the situation. Gia was a delight to work with. She died at the age of 26 from complications caused by AIDS. The writer, Stephen Fried, wrote a book about Gia, Thing of Beauty—The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia. To this day there is a huge following of Gia fans. This has been one of my most popular images of Gia.

Many think that my shooting for Playboy was a highlight in my career as a photographer. Actually, it was shooting fashion for magazines like Vogue. Arguably, the best of them was Italian Bazaar during the time that Lizette Kattan was the editor. She was smart, understood talent, and gave photographers total freedom to shoot as they pleased. Further, a photographer was asked to turn in only 3 to 5 transparencies of each shot… the photographer could keep all the rest of the film. And, as photographers, we were allowed to choose many of our own models which allowed for the discovery of new model talent. Vogue and Bazaar, USA were inclined to book only the models they considered to be stars or rapidly rising talents in the world of modeling. So, I was denied booking Cindy Crawford for Bazaar, USA at the time she was unknown (but a major model in Chicago). This photo of Janice Dickinson, done in a swimming pool, on the island of Mustique was not part of my fashion assignment. Rather, it was a fun shot, styled by the extrordinary Parisian talent (makeup artist for Christian Dior), Tyen. (Tyen, subsequently, went on to become a top fashion photographer, himself.) Janice was already a major model with whom I had worked quite often. For this shot, Tyen put the garland of flowers about Janice’s head. I plucked one petal and put it between her teeth. My Gitzo tripod was submerged in the pool and a Nikon F3 was mounted just above water level (later that year, I switched to Leica cameras, but that’s another story). I took my Gitzo into oceans and other hostile (to tripods) environments. Each night, my assistant would dismantle the tripod, wash it in fresh water, dry it and reassemble it in the morning. As my photographic prints go, this shot of Janice has been my most popular print after any image of Gia (Carangi) that I may have done (Gia has a wicked fan base). Oh, and though it was not part of my fashion shoot, Bazaar Italia, ran this (similar) image across two pages. That’s why I shoot so many horizontally formatted images!

Trying to get some practice with the lighting kit I got for Christmas – just about set up when my youngest girl, Mimi, decided to take centre stage! Luckily there are cold daylight bulbs in those lamps – ‘cos she just had to sniff them – probably checking to see if they were bright enough for her closeup !!! Moss and Twiggy. LOL / Saw this moss on these twigs in Haldon Forest, near Exeter Devon. / It was so bright, hairy, and thick. / The sky was slightly overcast and cloudy, but the moss was still bright. / Plenty of signs of animal activity around, like rabbits, foxes, and numerous birds. Rio 2009 – as featured in Issue 57 of Advanced Photoshop Magazine! I went head to head with another artist, after being given the same basic model shot to work with. This was the outcome for me! You can see both of our work in this issue, along with a simplified tutorial on how I achieved this look. The reason this is called “Rio 2009” – is because of my original inspiration. Remember that classic 80’s album by Duran Duran called Rio, with the fantastic Patrick Nagel artwork on the cover? The raven haired beauty with the ‘cherry ice cream smile’ – who looked exotic and edgy, with that supermodel gleam? Well I wanted to update that picture with a fresh approach. No longer trapped in the graphic art lines of Nagel, Rio has broken free, and is a bit more exotic and fierce now that it is 2009! I love blending cultural styles and colors, and this piece was a real treat to work because of that!

It’s called having deadlines. / But I wanted to post this because this year has been very much about me doing work for everyone else and next to nothing for myself, and this night was a blessed break from the pressure. A night of youthful frivolity and voyeuristic tendancies, photographic jam sessions and too much champagne, 80s glam rock and 90s supermodels, a love of Terry Richardson, Agyness Deyn, that bitchin Fiona Apple video clip and all things trashy and decadent. Debbie Harry would be proud. / It’s liberating to do something other than broken dolls, fairytales and goddamn alice in wonderland once in a while. I’m over it. This was real. Fun. Free.
