He’s heading out for a run down the 1/4 mile. Look at his eyes. Is that concentration or concern? Maybe even fear? Is he the master of that massively powerful machine he’s created? Or is he the slave that it needs to bring it to life? His name is Norm Oakey, and his car has a twin supercharged aluminium hemi engine with over 3000 horsepower. This image was taken around 1980 at Castlereagh Dragway in Sydney’s western suburbs, with my first camera, a Pentax ME Super, and I consider it my first good photograph. What do you think?

There are just a few iconic cars in the film industry but ranking top amongst them (IMHO) has got to be the Interceptor, based on the Australian V8 Ford Falcon XB CoupĂ© muscle car and much modified to be used in the first two Mad Max films, with its black on black paintjob, distinctive side pipes and of course the blower! The Supercharger! The caption above the picture is of course what Jim Goose says to the mechanic when Max is first introduced to the car. If you’re a petrol head, like me, then you will probably recognise this drawing instantly. Hopefully you’ll like it enough to actually buy a T shirt with it on. This drawing was done on 160g paper in varying soft graphite pencils with the text added post scanning via Photoshop. This design was taken from a photo I’d had of a friend’s car who has spent a lot of time and money making a very accurate replica version of Max’s Interceptor. Hope you like it Adrian! Same T shirt design as the original one I did on white background, but it looks better on a black shirt in my opinion. / In case you hadn’t guessed this is the Super-charger as seen on the much modified Australian Ford Falcon XB muscle car from the Mad Max films. Haven’t seen it? Well you’re missing out on a real treat. Go and rent it! The caption is the line from Jim Goose, Max’s best mate in the film.
