This image is a ‘double, long exposure’.I shot it on a mamiya 645 medium format camera. At dusk I took the afternoon exposure with the red earth and the blue sky then 3 hours later took another exposure on the same frame of film for 12 hours. This is the result.

This is a 15 minute exposure of star trails above one of the main pools at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. I took this when it first looked fully dark outside and I was still able to catch color from the remains of the earlier sunset. The color is as it came out of the camera with noise reduction applied. I was amazed at my luck in catching an Iridium flare! “Iridium flares”http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_flare are brilliant glints or flares created on predictable intervals by the constellation Iridium communication satellites interacting with the sun. You can tell the hotter stars by their streak’s blue color, with cooler ones coming in more red. What amazed me is that star trails would come in this good so soon after sunset. I attribute the nearly new moon and the low light pollution of this area in New Mexico. This was taken at ISO 400 at 28mm f/2.8 utilizing long-time exposure noise reduction in camera and further selective noise reduction via Neat Image in post.

Depression and anxiety affect 1 in 5 Australians and can be as severe, incapacitating and life threatening as other physical ailments. Reaching out for help is often difficult. With kind thanks to Justin for modelling for this image. Taken at Hallett Cove, South Australia
On a perfect day, everything that matters in life can fit into a single frame. I am pretty sure you know what I mean by a statement like this. A chilly morning starts with a haze trapped in the garden treetops, and you blossom with a completely unprovoked smile on your face. Lunch tastes like it is your last, the warm air around the table smells of exhilaration. Night is peaceful, with the sky of colours seen only on postcards from exotic lands that make you wish you were there. Hold on, I was there. Yes, it was a short trip on a rural road from the regional centre to the lovely beach. The sun was already low, somewhere between the sun visor and the horizon. I had only a quarter of an hour to make a shot. I must have taken at least a half a dozen images of the scene before I saw them. A couple, their footwear in their hands and a dog, barely visible here sniffing the rounded rock, emerged from the cliff shadows. The animal spotted me, and decided to check out the puffed middle aged man with his shoes full of sand and a photo bag that is ripping off his shoulder, a someone who clearly doesn’t fit in the surroundings. Despite the odds, I seemed to smell ok. They waved. My initial thought was, I had no intention of posting an image of a couple in love on a sunset lit beach, no way. But then, it must have been the overall warmth of the picture painted by the beautiful blazing star that gives us existence, the pacific that outlines our sovereignty, multihued sky crisscrossed with the Golden Fleece left by the planes on the air corridor North-South, and the mighty dark cliffs of the West Coast vanishing into the horizon. And of course, Love, eternal and pure Love.

Went up to Lancelin yesterday to test out my new 5D Mark II . Got up there fairly early in the afternoon as we though we would have to try and find a location to set up . When we arrived it was blowing a gale and sand got every where , must have brough back half the dunes with me . Still stuck it out though and took a fair few shots . Later on the at night we though we would try some star trails as the wind had died off . Got a few shots would have liked to stay longer but we were worried about finding our way out the sand dunes at night in the 4wd and not getting bogged . / Have to say i love the 5D MKII . http://kirkhille.wordpress.com/ Various images of mine are for sale on various finishes and sizes from Gloss and lustre, Metallic and Fuji Flex prints. Sometimes the best photos come without preparation, on the first tryout. ...if you were facing this way but most people were going the other way! I have a love/hate affair with freeways, hate being on them but love taking photos of them and seeing this one is only 5 minutes from my house it’s always the one I go to. Walking home from the station I looked up and that damn this is gonna be a good sunset and as I didn’t have enough time to get anywhere near the coast or somewhere beautiful I headed here instead. / Settings Canon 40D, 10-22mm EF-S. This sunset touched a place in my heart, to think of all the people that took a chance and walked over this great land in hope of a better life. I had just covered a months worth of travel. Not sure if I have the stuff it took for them to claim Oregon as a new home.
