Canon 20D – 17-40mm L – 17mm – 1s – f/11 Antelope Canyon is the most-visited and most-photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon formed over the course of millions of years by erosion of the Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to wind erosion. Rainwater (especially during monsoon season) runs into the wash that Antelope Canyon is part of, picking up speed and sand as it rushes through the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways are eroded away, making the corridors wider and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic ‘flowing’ shapes in the rock. Upper Antelope Canyon, called Tse bighanilini, “the place where water runs through rocks” by the Navajo, is the most frequently visited by tourists, due to two considerations. First, its entrance and entire length are at ground level, requiring no climbing. Second, beams (shafts of direct sunlight radiating down from openings in the top of the canyon) are much more common in Upper than in Lower. Mt. Edgecumbe, a small volcano off the coast of Sitka Alaska is rarely visible and certainly in my 20 years of traveling up there I have never once seen the sun set over Edgecumbe like this. Truly inspiring light!

Another version of this shot was the hit shot of the past two months on my lightthinker-gallery on deviantArt. In no time it roared up into second position on this gallery: the present dates are 1985 views and 285 favs. Some of you will have had a look at my ligththinker-gallery and seen that the central impetus of this gallery lies in the combination of lightthoughts, i.e. lightful and inspiring quotations with beautiful photography. At this particular spot the morning-light show on that July morning a few days ago here in the forests near Hilversum/The Netherlands was at its best, when the sunbeams were chasing the morning ghosts. After which trees were they hiding? – I was ever so lucky to find this place in time, as this show was a fleeting appearance. A misty morning blended with an image by Marcus Ranum in CS3. The lady’s forlorn demeanor and “all dressed up with nowhere to go” image made me think of Karen Carpenter’s song “Looking for Love…” / Though people say love is everywhere, / I’m looking for love, but it’s just not there For those interested, the background image was processed, the figure placed (which automatically gives a second layer) and blended using the opacity slider, “blend if” options in the blending mode, and erase tool. A shadow was produced with the burn tool, and light controlled on the figure with dodge, burn, and a white brush at about 5%. The blur tool was also used around any hard edges to help the figure blend into the b/g and not appear sharp and ‘dropped in’. Most of these actions were done on separate layers in order to be able to switch them on and off individually and ensure the correct effect was achieved. It also prevents ruining the whole image – if something doesn’t work, just delete that particular layer! as I was sitting at the hospital.. waiting for my hubbys discharge.. so many thoughts running thru my mind these sheets had just been placed.. the sun was gleaming in .. it is a new day update: thanks for your thoughts and prayers for my hubby.. he is better.. and following doctors orders.. it will be a battle everyday .. and he has always been a fighter.. so , on with the life.. this is a celebration photo :).. not a sad one.. We spent a weeks holiday in this area, and the weather was pretty poor most days, I had a hard time pulling anything good out of my Canon 40D !! / However, on the last morning, I woke early to a glimmer of light, and planned to shoot the early morning light falling on the Summer Isle. Of course, that didn’t work out, so feeling despondant, drove around the corner to turn around. / Glad I did, for less than five minutes, the light played ball ! / I knew I couldn’t shoot for a conventional shot, far too much contrast with those sunbeams, so I settled for a three – shot , hand-held, HDR image. There wasn’t time to set up the tripod, but I didn’t need it, since great depth of field was not required on this occasion. Luckily I had my IS ( image stabilisation ) lens already fitted ! The light rapidly disappeared under a big blanket of cloud, which remained with us in the North West for over a WEEK !! / It was however, a magical moment, filled with adrenaline ! Shot on my Canon EOS 40D, Canon 17-85mm f4.0-5.6 IS USM lens set at 79mm, 0EV, -2EV, +2EV, RAW, iso 100, cloudy wb, then processed in Photomatix, and further enhanced in Adobe Photoshop CS3, where I had to do some more selective Tone Mapping, in particular the moorland, where I wanted a little ‘pool’ of light. I also helped along the sunbeams with a subtle use of ‘dodging and burning’. / LAB colour was also employed, gently. The ‘warm up ’ photo filter was also used in Layers, and eradicated from areas not required by using Layer masks and painted out. / The result was what I had in my mind when I saw the scene, and could not be described as a true record of the scene before me. / This is the Digital Age, let us enjoy it, and use it to advantage !!
