Boreas Pass, Colorado…..one of my favorite places on the face of the Earth to shoot at….the fact that there is hardly anyone ever up here and the fields of Wildflowers go on forever really make this quite an extraordinary place. Located on the Continental Divide, it reaches an altitude of 11,481 feet high. The pass was formerly known as Breckenridge Pass in the 1860s, when it served as an early route for thousands of prospectors during the Colorado Gold Rush who crossed from South Park to look for gold in the valley of the Blue around Breckenridge. In 1866, it was widened to a wagon road that accommodated stagecoaches. In 1882, under the direction of Sidney Dillon of the Union Pacific Railroad , the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad (by then controlled by the Union Pacific) begun laying narrow gauge tracks up the pass, which Dillon renamed in honor of Boreas, the Ancient Greek god of the North Wind.

THIS COUPLE WERE WALKING ALONG THE WET SAND DURING A SUNSET ON TENBY BEACH WALES. TROUBLE WAS THE BACKGROUND WAS NOT SO GOOD. THE SUNSET IN THIS SHOT WAS ON ANOTHER BEACH WITH WET SAND. PERFECT. I DROPPED THE COUPLE FROM ONE BEACH TO ANOTHER. OK I CHEATED, I CAN NEVER BE A POLITICIAN NOW, I TOLD THE TRUTH ! ITS ALL A BIT OF FUN

cycling season is over for me, so there’s more time to head up into the mountains and enjoy the Austrian landscape… so I went for a hike yesterday in the area around Kühtai (Tirol’s highest village at 2.020m) and headed up towards Gaiskogel (2.820m). / it’s not really a hard climb, the first 500m up are fairly easy as the lead along a skiing-slope. only the last part is getting a bit more strenuous, as one has to climb up a steep boulder field. this brings you to the so called Gaiskogelscharte (2.658m) and from there it’s a short way to the Gaiskogel itself. anyway, this pano was taken pretty much halfway between Gaiskogelscharte and Gaiskogel at approx. 2.720m. straight ahead you can see the Rotkogel and the Räuhengrat and looking to the left one can see the Kraspesferner (small glacier) with the Rotgrubenspitze (3.042m). as I was carrying quite some equipment and it was already getting late, I decided to turn around at this point and not continue to the top (appr. another 25min), but instead take a small detour to a reservoir and take some photos there as well…. I visited this area many times over the last 20 years to photograph this very scene, usually in the dark after twilight. I was there two nights ago and I couldn’t resist shooting it again as the sun set. I was also fortunate this time to have the lights from the two cars which passed by, one up and one down the hill, aligned so nicely. This is taken at “Ladies Lookout” atop Signal Hill, St John’s Newfoundland Canada. “Ladies Lookout” is so named because from this very point women would for generations walk there to look for signs of their men returning from the fishing grounds, the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. You can only imagine when Mother Nature unleashed the mighty North Atlantic the humility these people must have felt! Kyleakin is the first village encountered on the Isle of Skye, when you cross over the bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh…....this is where the old Ferry boat used to land, which I don’t miss at all, romantic it might be, but darned inconvenient !! / The old ruin you can see behind the boats is Castle Moil…......a few facts for you….... “The 14th Century Castle Moil has had many names in its long history. Also known as Dun Akyn (Norse for Hakon’s Fort) and An Caisteal Maol in Gaelic, it is now a romantic ruin. Sited at the Skye end of the road bridge in the village of Kyleakin, the castle has Norse connections. Legend has it that a Norwegian princess, otherwise known as “Saucy Mary”, ordered a chain to be hung from the castle to the mainland so that no boat could pass without paying a tax.” / Nothing new under the sun then, eh ??!! LOL !!
