“Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” Confucius
This is the unframed version without a quote attached. There have been requests for this version. Captive “The youth, intoxicated with his admiration of a hero, fails to see, that it is only a projection of his own soul, which he admires.” Ralph Waldo Emerson Who is you’re hero? / / Name: Panthera tigris sumatrae (Sumatran Tiger) Description: The Sumatran tiger has the darkest coat of all tigers. Its broad, black stripes are closely spaced and often doubled. Unlike the Siberian tiger, it has striped forelegs. Sumatran tigers are the smallest tiger subspecies. Males average 2.4 meters (8 feet) in length from head to tail and weigh about 120 kilograms (264 pounds). Females measure approximately 2.2 meters (7 feet) in length and weigh about 90 kilograms (198 pounds). Distribution: The Sumatran tiger is found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in habitat that ranges from lowland forest to submontain and montain forest with some peat-moss forest. Biology: The Sumatran tiger eats wild pig, big deer (called rusa), and small deer (called muntjak or barking deer). The specific range size of this tiger is not know, however the population density is approximately 4–5 adult tigers/100 km 2 (39 mile 2) in optimal lowland rainforest. As elevation increases through submontain and montain forests, the number of tigers in any given area decreases because there is less prey available. Status in the wild: 400-500 wild Sumatran tigers were believed to exist in 1998, primarily in the island’s national park areas, but no island-wide census or monitoring system has been possible. Tiger numbers have continued to decline because of poaching of tigers to supply the illegal trade in tiger parts. The last remnants of lowland forest are being eliminated to establish oil palm plantations and for shifting agriculture by recent settlers from other areas of Sumatra and Indonesia. Ongoing road development makes many formerly inaccessible mountain areas accessible to illegal logging even on the steepest slopes, and many mountainous areas are being converted into plantations for coffee and other products for international markets. Tigers are legally protected but are not highly valued. Captive breeding: For three years, the Indonesian Zoological Parks’ Association (PKBSI) has been working with the Tiger Global Conservation Strategy to develop a conservation program for Sumatran tigers. In addition to the 65 Sumatran tigers living in Indonesian zoos, there are 55 tigers managed by North American zoos, 100 in European zoos, and 12 in Australasian zoos. This captive population is descended from 37 wild-caught founders. The Indonesian Sumatran Tiger Masterplan now has the potential to function as the heart of the Sumatran tiger population worldwide. It is designed to preserve sufficient genetic diversity to reinforce both captive and wild populations, thus fulfilling its goal to ensure that the in situ tiger program comprises verifiable founders permanently identified and registered in the Indonesian Sumatran Tiger Studbook. It also extends the capabilities of Indonesian zoo staff to professionally manage their tiger programs in Indonesia, and at the same time serves as a model for other range country tiger management programs in Southeast Asia.

Looking for a ‘check list’ or ‘running sheet’ for your next exhibition? Thanks to the power of google.com, and a spare hour on a Saturday afternoon of sporadic rain, I found a few PDF’s that should help you: Events Management Check List ... I really like this one! It’s comprehensive, has tick-boxes, and could easily be modified to suit any type of event. Running, Promoting and Organsing your Event / ... Page 1 to 17 have great information on setting up and ensuring your t’s are crossed and i’s are dotted. Page 18 to 20 are the pages you want to print! Club/Association Management Program / ... This is a most extensive booklet (36 pages) outlining EVERYTHING about exhibition running. Whilst it is aimed at sport clubs, the information is easily transferable to anyone’s exhibition. Page 19 says … / ” It is essential that an event has an evaluation process that is more than simply monitoring the planning and implementation. Evaluation should be carried out through the life of the event as well as at the end. Information recorded from monitoring provides a record and can be kept as a historical record for events that are held regularly. Criteria for success, and methods for measuring those criteria, need to be set when the event is first planned. Measures depend on the important questions to be answered. Questions may have to do with attendances, quality of staff, revenue, public opinion and press coverage. Methods for obtaining the information needed to answer the questions might include statistics for attendance, questionnaires from participants and spectators, and financial records. “ Survival Guide to Event Management / ... Another long-winded yet comprehensive (56 page) PDF that has a lot of useful information. Visit these pages for the details you really want: 9, 16, 24, 27, 32, 36-37. But you MUST read every other page in conjunction to get an overall and complete view of how to run your exhibition properly and successfully! Submission form for Major Events / Activities in Adelaide / ... Maybe your exhibition is SOOOO BIG that you need to fill this in. Event Guidelines / ... This could easily have been ripped off from any one of the suggested PDF’s above, but it still has some interesting information. You’ll want pages 21 to 24.

Today I went to visit the portfolios of RedBubble’s top sellers. Namely the top 20 T-shirt sellers and the top 20 wall art sellers. (This ranking did not include self purchases) I found some strong patterns in how these sellers showcase their art online and make use of RedBubble to sell their work. There were exceptions, but I found myself flicking from one portfolio to another nodding my head as the same habits came up again and again. What I didn’t find The best selling artists come from all over the globe, are a variety of ages, and there isn’t a popular genre or medium selling better than others. My very subjective opinion would also politely add that these top sellers come from various skill levels. / / / Lack of Bling You know how some people have large images or animations down the left hand side of their portfolio page? Our best sellers don’t do that. Their portfolios are fairly clean with plenty of white space. / / / Artwork Descriptions Almost all the top sellers have ‘text only’ descriptions. And they simply describe the artwork – what it was inspired by, how it was created etc. Of the handful who have images in their descriptions, they are small detail shots or a photograph of someone holding/wearing the finished product – like buyers booth. / / / Groups Most of the top sellers are in about 5 groups, some are in none, a couple are in 10-ish. None had a huge list a groups. And they all are in groups which are relevant and make sense for their style and medium. / / / Journals About half the top sellers had no journals or very few journals. Which lead me to do some googling. I quickly noticed that several were cleverly blogging elsewhere and participating in other non-art communities to find customers. Why sell your band photos to other photographers when you can sell them to the fans of that band via a music forum? Journals were directly related to their art, exhibitions, initiatives, creative ventures in the real world and insights into how they make their art. I struggled to find non-art themed journals in this group of top sellers. Only one person had a “thanks for the feature” journal on their first page (which quickly got my attention after reading this last week.) / / / Length of Portfolio Some top sellers have less than 10 works and others have more than 10 pages. But the bulk were sitting on around 2-4 pages of work in their portfolio. So what has this taught me about selling on RedBubble? Don’t worry about how my art compares to others Keep my pages clear of clutter, with plenty of white space Use descriptions to describe my work and nothing more If I must use additional pictures, the best kind are photos of people wearing/holding the finished product Being in relevant groups is better than being in lots of groups Journals about my art are the best kind to have Blogging and promoting my art elsewhere is a really good idea I should keep my portfolio short and sweet Jo

What does it take to be a successful artist online? Hard work? Unique art? Good networking skills? Yes, yes, and yes, but if you’re looking for something a little more concrete the following list includes seven helpful tools and three essential skills which I believe every online artist should try to acquire. 1. A good digital camera If you want your art to look as good as possible online (as every artist should!) you’ll need a high-quality digital camera—I’d suggest 8 megapixels or higher. And of course, a good camera is important not only when taking photos for your online portfolio, but also when capturing images for your art blog or emailing a client pictures of the progress you’ve made with their commission piece. 2. Your own art blog In my opinion, blogging is the single greatest tool for any online artist. It can feel like a full-time job all by itself, but it’s the absolute best way for ONE artist to reach hundreds, thousands, even millions of people— and it doesn’t have to cost you a dime. I’ve written about this before, though, so check out these 9 reasons why every artist should have an art blog. If that doesn’t convince you, nothing will. 3. Your own online portfolio Art blogs are great for showing works-in-progress, daily paintings, and posting art thoughts and opinions, but if you want to show off your art a little more “professionally,” a personal portfolio website will do just that. There are many providers of artist websites… naturally, I’m most familiar with my own company, foliotwist, which provides a simple art website solution for artists (and it also comes with its own integrated blog). FineArtStudioOnline and Artspan are two other providers reviewed by EmptyEasel in the past, and I’d suggest taking a look at them as well. You might also want to read about the two types of artist websites to avoid. 4. Adobe Photoshop Whether you need to adjust the color in a photo or just resize your images for the web, the professional’s choice for image manipulation is Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop is expensive, however, and has a fairly steep learning curve so you might want to consider Photoshop Elements (a cheaper, lighter version) or GIMP, a free image manipulation program (which is also tricky to learn, however). 5. A free PayPal account This one’s almost a no-brainer: PayPal takes all major credit cards, it’s reliable, and it’s extremely easy to set up and use. Yes, there are other options for collecting payment online (I’ve used ProPay as well) but PayPal has the lowest fees and it’s also well-known around the world. 6. A mailing list and monthly newsletter This can be as low-key as you’d like, but it’s very important that you give interested people a way to stay informed about your art. All you have to do is include a short sentence somewhere prominent on your website that goes like this: “If you’d like to receive email updates from me about my art, write to me at-” and end with your email address. Over time your mailing list will grow, and you’ll be able to use it to promote new artwork, upcoming shows, or anything else. And if you’re new to newsletters, here’s a lot more information on how to increase sign-ups for your newsletter as well. 7. A Google Analytics account Once you’ve got your own art blog or website set up, you’ll probably want to make sure all that effort was worth it. With Google Analytics you can keep track of how many visits you receive each day, where your visitors are coming from, and a lot of other helpful information. Google Analytics is absolutely free even though it’s a professional-grade program with some serious power behind it. Google’s also done a great job at making it easy to use and understand, so you’ll experience the practical benefits right away. 8. Decent writing ability You don’t have to churn out prize-winning literature to be a successful online artist, but knowing how to string a few words together is a definite plus. Using a spell-checker is always a good choice (they’re included in every word document program, so why not?) and just spending a few extra minutes to self-censor doesn’t hurt either. In the end, writing ability isn’t something you can buy, but it IS something you can learn—mostly by doing. And trust me, it’ll come in handy as you describe your art, email collectors, network with other art bloggers, and in many other ways too. 9. A basic understanding of HTML I know programming HTML code isn’t for everyone (I honestly never thought I’d be coding my own website) but it certainly is the artistic “medium” of the internet, and whether you’re copying and pasting a PayPal button next to each of your paintings or just creating html links in your art blog, the more you know the better off you’ll be. If it all sounds too daunting, here’s my advice: just learn as you go. When you need to know how to do something, just type your question into Google, like, “How to make a link in HTML?” or, “How to change a background color in HTML?” That’s how I learned, and so far it’s worked well for me. 10. General knowledge of search engine optimization SEO (or search engine optimization) is a way of writing and organizing your website or art blog so that search engines like Google will send more visitors your way. There’s a LOT more to it (too much to explain here) so if you’re interested I’d just recommend checking out the SEO for Artists section for more information. And there you have it… 7 tools and 3 skills to be a successful online. (Here you can read the article with all activated links taking you further to get more infos…) Read also: 101 Design resource sites – The primary focus of this list is inspiration, it can come from a photograph, font, or a website. The secondary focus is improving your design skills, which can be done by keeping up to date with tutorials and reading other graphic design blogs.
