I took this photograph about a year and a half ago, and it is one that I have been thinking about uploading, but have never managed to bring myself to share it – but that time has now come. / / Meet Nyango / / She is not what she seems – sure, she is a Western Lowland Gorilla, but she is of sub species Cross River – a very rare and special primate indeed, and in fact, the only one in captivity in the world [Yes, thats right folks – in the whole world]. The reason she is in captivity, was to save her life from the bushmeat trade. She has a life long injury to her right eye as a result of her experience while just a baby, but lives a happy and full life now, with a group of Westerns in sanctuary in Cameroon. Look closely at her good eye – you will see that she is looking directly at me – she loved to do this, which is unusal for a gorilla / / These gorillas are found on the border regions of Cameroon and Nigeria and are the rarest and most endangered of all the great apes, and indeed all primates. There are only about 250 of them left in the wild [and just this one in captivity] and they are threatened by many factors, including Ebola virus, poaching and the bush meat crisis. / / I hope you like this one – its a bit special /

Bloor street is a street somewhere in Canada. Keen Photography originally took this picture of which , with permission, i subtracted the fine lady and added a much finer owl. Story / Jack Ninox has wound up in Canada, and is very lost. Far from his roots he has found his way into a subway system looking for odd jobs.

Young Kingfisher – one of 6 boys who were rescued, and were all released back into the wild this morning. You can tell it’s young because of a white spot on it’s beak. When they become adults, the beak is more curved, and the white spot disappears. They also become very slim. New Zealand native bird – and subspecies to the Sacred Kinfisher of Australia.

Fort Amherst is located at the entrance of St. John’s Harbor opposite Signal Hill across the Narrows’. The Fort was built in the 1770’s to defend the entrance of the Narrows’. Gun placements were used at The Fort during WWII to protect the harbor from German U-boats. The ruins seen below the lighthouse are all that are left now of the fort. In 1813 a lighthouse was built at Fort Amherst and was to be the first permanent lighthouse established in Newfoundland. It operated until 1835 but was then replaced by a new structure in 1852, which was demolished in the early 1950’s to make way for the new lighthouse which is seen today. / / From the Northern tip of Labrador down to the eastern coast of Newfoundland, the sea that pounds and caresses these shores is nicknamed Iceberg Alley. Bergs born 10,000 years ago on the Greenland icecap dance along the coast and far out to sea, propelled unpredictably by wind and tide, tumbling, twirling, and breaking into fantastic shapes before melting in the warm waters of the gulf stream. / / An iceberg’s journey down Iceberg Alley begins once it breaks off from the edges of Greenland’s glaciers. Dropping into the ocean, it is gripped by the Labrador Current and carried through the dark ocean along the coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador. In the past, during certain times of the year, the alley has been thick with the largest and most beautiful icebergs found anywhere in the world. They glide majestically along, alone or in groups, obscuring the horizon with their tall, jagged silhouettes. / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / / More in this series / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography

Digital drawing/painting/friggin’ about of a man who purports himself to be named Lawrence. That’s really all I know about him. The title is also the name of a very short run, bad, late 70’s sit-com starring McLean Stevenson. It was mildly entertaining, but only because he was McLean Stevenson and would, occasionally, do something smart-butted and lovely. Everytime I hear the name Larry or Lawrence, I think of that show and I spend too much time amusing myself, upon meeting people named such, just thinking of saying “Hello Larry!” at them. That’s right: I”m a dork! Not really: I”m a nerd! I’m too smart to be a common garden variety dork! Only a nerd (or a dork) would argue that point, too! Oh, or ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, but that’s dangerous to think about, as I am quite mad about Peter O’Toole already and that character .. vroon! I love a capable madman! This will be for sale, if and when Lawrence says it is. Or, Peter O’Toole! Whomever comes first! Actually, I started out being intrigued by some bad fashion photos, and making a design based on one of them. Lawrence came later! That’s more than you need to know, already, methinks, so, tata, for now!

What: This is the side of a tree-trunk that periodically resides underwater … but currently is seeing too much sunlight. Subsequently, the water-logged ridges down its side are receding in, exposing amazing grains of wood. / What was once submerged, is now emerged. / (Thus explaining the odd title) / ... / Location: Kangaroo Island, January 2008 / All artwork is© Stephen Mitchell, All Rights Reserved. / You may not use, replicate, manipulate, redistribute, or modify this image without my express consent.
