Hello! My name is Mr Baxter, and I’m going to tell you a story. As we’ve had a few new members of staff join RedBubble recently, not least myself, we thought it was about time to remind everyone exactly how all the marvellous products that adorn the office and so many of your homes are actually made. However, they are mainly made in the Australian countryside, or Horsham, to be more specific, which is a very long drive. So to avoid the sort of fights that prolonged time on a bus normally brings, we decided to steal a plane. It wasn’t very big, but it fitted us all neatly, and afforded remarkable views of Melbourne as we left. This thoroughly made up for the brutal hour in which we were forced to rise. Above you can see the machine we use to print all the posters, it was most excited to meet Xavier, having heard a great deal about his habits, unkempt hair and dancing skills. Xavier returned the favour by immediately logging on and buying this. Here are some RedBubble greeting cards winging their way through a printer. Of course our cards are hand finished so here is the lovely lovely lovely Jo, finishing a card, with her hands, after being taught by the excellent Rachel. Next up were the framed prints. You can see Michael carefully selected the right one, before Nepal exhibits his trademark ‘Dust-a-tron’ technique, where he stares at the dust very hard until it GOES AWAY. And finally there are his hands sealing the frame and the print so no pesky dust can get back in when he isn’t looking. Here’s an evocative shot of a sturdy Eucalyptus Regnans frame being wrapped with canvas. In about a week this will be significantly brightening a wall somewhere in the world. This was a tense moment as Martin read out the latest Employee of the Month. I did not win, again. Martin did. Again. And here’s Martin and Paul being shown the joys of the matted prints by Andrew. Although Paul doesn’t look too happy, perhaps the print has not been cut right, perhaps it is Andrew’s tie, we’ll never know. No school expedition would ever be complete without a group photo, so here it is, and for those who like to put faces to names: (clockwise from top left) Geoff, Martin, Paul C, Paul P, Troy, Xavier, and the lovely Jo. Of course that isn’t the whole team, no, Pete was guarding the plane, Paul V couldn’t find any clothes, Russ was saving the world somewhere else, Jason was making sure Sacramento was behaving itself, Rhana was on a hill in Tasmania and Nat and Ed were both asleep. In different parts of London. 10,496 miles away from the event. And of course, I was behind the lens. With a little bit of help from Jo. I trust that this has been informative. Please keep an eye on me for more of the same. Regards, Mr Baxter – Chief Detective Inspector of Newsworthy Journal Posts

Hello! We have a jammed packed release today! Calendars: We’ve made calendars available for public sale. Just in time for calendar buying season. Anyone can make a calendar ... it’s easy! Challenges: We’ve released an update today that should speed up the voting in challenges (we removed the animation). Over the next few months we’ll be doing more tweaks to the challenges – as we incorporate your feedback (e.g. we’ll introduce the ability to see multiple entries whilst voting). Forums: We’re testing out a moderated forum idea this week. From time to time there are heated discussions in the forums … we don’t want to shut these discussions down as they can be some of the most interesting and informative discussions. But we do want them to remain civil and constructive. We want people to ‘play nice’. So we’re testing the idea that some forum threads can be flagged as ‘moderated’ – that is each comment is reviewed prior to being made public. The folks that will help with the reviewing are the staff of RB and a range of volunteers from the community. We’ll test this idea out for a few weeks – and see how it goes! Most Helpful Bubbler: Jo’s running search this week to find the Most Helpful Bubbler. There are so many people who really make this community the supportive and fun place it is. Let’s get together and recognize them for what they contribute. Nominate another member or host and they could win a special prize pack worth US$100 tailored especially for their tastes. Plus a special featured page in their honor. Plus an interview on their creative journey to be published in the Daily Wrap. Got someone is mind? Nominate them by email with 50-100 words describing why they are the most helpful bubbler. Then keep it a big juicy secret so that they get an extra special surprise when we announce the shortlisted nominees next week. RedBubble Challenges: “Compassion, Friendship and Courage” is in the final design stages and should be going on sale soon. Your work looks and reads beautifully. “The City” is now open for images and writing submissions. Get shuffling as you only have 13 days to submit work. And the publication after that will be ‘Nude” so start preparing suitable written and visual work. It will open for submissions in about 3-4 weeks. Here’s a few of my favourites … There’s also a few comings and goings this week. The RB tech team is metamorphosing as we establish an office in San Francisco. Not all the wonderful people who’ve worked on the website are staying with RB and this week I’d like to say a very fond farewell to Justin and Ben. Justin has been with RB since the very early days (2 years ago) ... and he was just the most wonderful person to work with! We wish him all the very best with his next venture. Ben has been with RB since the start of this year – and his dry and laconic sense of humour will sorely be missed. Thank you both! / On the flip side I’d like to welcome Jason to RB – who has joined RB as our sales and marketing guru. Jason has spent more than 10 years marketing and selling on the Internet – and his role with RB is to sell more of your wonderful work (and helping you to sell your work). Welcome Jason. Ciao for this week, - Peter

A little while ago I promised I’d have some more news on our calendar dreaming soon – We’re not 100% there yet, still fiddling around with the final printing stock, size, ordering hanger material etc BUT it’s really close … I’ve made some calendars that everyone I show them to like, including some real life users ! So there’s good news, bad news and we need your help. / / The Good: We are looking at a 13 page, A3 sized 300 GSM calendar, wire bound for about $18USD ($20AUD) – Plus a dash of postage. They feel heavy and look nice. The Bad: Christmas is coming and we have too much to do – But, if there is enough demand “we’ll” ( read Justin ) will try and find a way to squeeze them in somehow. The Help: So what I’d ask you guys to do is help us by answering a couple of questions (in the comments or via BubbleMail to me is fine) 1) How many calendars as described above would you buy of your own work to sell or give away ? / 2) How many calendars would you buy from other artists to keep or give as gifts if they were available ? / 3) How many ‘best of RedBubble category’ style calendars would you buy if they were available ? / 4) What’s of most interest – 1, 2 or 3. Ultimately I think we will do 1, 2 and 3 – But for this year we might have to compromise and I want to make sure we make the right choice to keep as many of you guys happy as we can ! James

Well the 100,000 masterpieces celebration ended …
Well the 100,000 masterpieces celebration ended a couple of days ago – and it was quite popular! Here’s a graph of the daily sales on RedBubble since we launched in Feb 07: The first big spike was Christmas last year … and the recent spike was last week. Congratulations to the 2239 folks who received a sales notification last week. Another stat I was surprised to learn recently is that 74% of members who have made a purchase on RedBubble aren’t active uploaders … it seems there is a large number of ‘fans’ active on RedBubble who just browse, comment and buy. In fact I think that only about a fifth of the members on RedBubble are trying to sell their work … so last week over 10% of the people who are trying to sell on RedBubble made one or more sales. I also found it interesting to learn that most people (64%) who make a purchase on RedBubble make their purchase on the first or second visit to the site. There’s a couple of reasons for this. RedBubble itself generates between 30% and 40% of all sales on the site through our search engine work – i.e. a potential buyer types something into Google, they find something that matches their search interest on RedBubble and buy it straight away. The second part of the explanation is that Bubblers direct their potential customers to the site … and these people come to the site in ‘buy mode’ and transact pretty much straight away. And while I’m talking about the power of the search engines, they can generate opportunities in few different ways. Judith Oppenheimer has recently licenced one of her images to an agency after they found it on RedBubble. Congratulations Judith! You can read about that here. Well that’s about it for today … oh but before I forget, you remember the incredibly cool t-shirt comp we launched last week? Well due to popular demand we’ve extended the date for entries by a few days. So you’ve no excuse to not get involved and hopefully end up with your design hanging in streetwear store Demo, in London. So get scribbling. Ciao, - Peter
Some photo-shop layer. I just really like this image at the moment. / Unfinished work in process. Really just a layer from another image that i want to clean up and take further. Only just started playing with photo-shop so any comments, help and advice would be welcome. SaRaH x This image is to accompany My short story, / Love & the darkness. LoVe & The DarKneSS Maybe it was always dark ? She wasn’t sure? It had been so long ago. The silver light had died so low that she could barley remember what it even looked like? Couldn’t remember it even ever being warm!? There where glimmers as it faded. Sometimes even bright bursts! / And so she had hope. She had faith that she would feel something again. She had so much faith! / She tended to the flame, but she was growing weaker. She was always trying to keep the flame burning but the cold darkness was never going to let it burn as bright as it could. She always knew she was going to be drained and did not have enough energy to keep the flame burning in such a world. Did he think her flame was big enough to burn up his darkness? That her hart was strong enough to bare his coldness? Her skin thick enough!? / Yes, the darkness chose LoVe because she shone pure & true in his dark lonely world. But he kept her in the end because he came to know she was soft, delicate & fragile so he didn’t have to be afraid of her outshining his power. He would always have the power. She could never hurt him as much as he could hurt her …............... Never! Because she was LoVe and he was the cold darkness, brittle and callous, with a greedy pornographic appetite that slowly ate away at LoVe. He would feast on whores every morning while LoVe lay wasted and dying. She remembered how he had seemed to really care about the flame on occasion, like he may really have been trying to help her shine and not just concerned with helping himself to her radiant body so that he could feel more powerful in his pornographic world? She just hadn’t realized this at the time because he was so powerful and she had already been drained by another darkness. He so sure of himself in his punk world that she could not possibly believe that he had had to use and abuse others to gain satisfaction, to gain anything that made him feel good about himself. To gain what he thought was a good life? She really thought he might love her? That he liked her for more than what her body could offer. He started to make beautiful things when he was with her, rather than the dark things he had spent so much time making when he was alone and it seemed he wanted to grow in a positive way, rather than recycle the past, recycle the hate, recycle the resentment and ignorance of the father who held women in contempt. Maybe the memories she thought had been so precious and real were not real at all? / But she must have seen something? Something more than lust? Something more than his punk power? She must have? Because otherwise she would have never have gone with him across the desert to live with his family. To meet the farther. To give him her everything. To shine for him, trusting that he would shine for her when she was drained & down. He did not. She had no strength left, because she had given it all to him and she couldn’t shine any more …............................................. The Pornographic darkness prevailed for many years. / Dragging LoVe down into the cold DiRt, he sucked her dry, stole her energy and had eaten up all of her beauty for himself ! He spat hate into her face day after day, night after night. / Her hart on her sleeve, she had foolishly trusted would be safe. It wasn’t. / The object lay quivering like the dying, tortured, wrecked body of a little mouse that a cat had left to die, finished entertaining itself with the small object. Like the cat, the pornographic darkness had not really ever wanted to kill love, he had just wanted to play and entertain himself. To feel satisfied and powerful. / If LoVe had understood, that to the darkness her hart was nothing more than a shinny, sexy new toy to use and abuse, then when he had had his fun discard like a cheap, useless, dirty worn out piece of sex stained plastic, she would have never have given him her full, true hart …................. / Now she was left behind in his cold nothingness, she was broken, confused and alone. She thought she was dead !? / LoVe & Beauty had disappeared into the cold darkness, where nothing could be seen, felt or heard. / The pornographic nightmare was all consuming …................. / Bleeding his black, lost, hurt and humiliated, she could hardly breathe, she felt sick, like her body had been poisoned. It seemed hopeless to try and stand up, let alone take any steps. Where would she go? She was so weak and tired, the thought of having to get up and move forward with out being slammed right back down again by the over bearing, seemingly all powerful darkness exhausted her. The realization of how thin and delicate her only skin was frightened her. How could she protect herself ? How could she stand up and walk when she was so damaged, so very fragile? She had not had enough time to recover her precious hart. The darkness was still there. He had returned and was as vicious and nasty as ever …..................... It seemed now, that he really was hell bent on destroying her completely !!!! This time he wanted to really kill her !!!! He wanted to kill LoVe !!!! she pulled herself up out of the thick black heavy tar that was his hart. Thick sticky black substance rolled off her damaged translucent porcelain skin. / LoVe stood up and started to shine …........ SaRaHKnOwDoG, 2008

this is a fairy i finished the other day,or at least finished for now,i will probably update it next time i work on it.
Snack time!
I did this illustration in college for a children’s book I had written. Honestly, I don’t even remember the name of it. (I know, that’s bad of me…bad Steve, BAD!) I don’t remember it being all that good of a story anyway. Had something to do with a kid making a rocket ship, then going to space and having crazy adventures with space monsters. (Not exactly crazy-original).
