/ Saw by Michael Eyssens I haven’t been on here much lately. Simply because I have been studying and SHOCK GASP HORROR actually out there taking photos. I’ve just completed some preliminary shots for a series I’m planning using a lot of blood (I found some great blood recipes- sticky blood, fresh blood, old blood etc). Looks like my ideas are going to work which is great. And the blood is fan-fricken-tastic and tastes great! I now have like, 20 shots of myself with various types of blood smeared on to see how it comes up. That wasted some time that should have been spent studying. I doubt the finished product will be kiddie suitable so i’ll have to find some way of sharing without sharing too much. Hopefully (weather and study permitting) I’ll get it all done next fortnight. Any Melbourne people on here feel like getting blood splattered all over them one day in the next couple of weeks? Drop me a line jo.obrien@hotmail.com That’s enough procrastination for now- back to the books!

I was asked by a adult education teacher to design a 10 week course on “Introduction to Digital Photography” for local college. My biggest problem will be to not overwhelm with too many tech terms that a beginner, but to keep it interesting and yes amusing enough to engage the students. I have an outline, and am building it from there.

As a little experiment, I uploaded an image version of my Ode to Nothing poem and bought it on white and black greeting cards. Worked quite well. This might be a way for writers on RedBubble to participate in selling Simply create a greeting card related to your writing: maybe an image, quote, or (if short enough) the whole written work. Then readers who like your writing can buy the card – you get paid and they get a little momento. As another example, kseriphyn has a logo for her story The Callings . If this was available as a greeting card, readers could show their appreciation for the story by buying one. All you need is some way of creating an image file. This is possible even if you don’t have a fancy graphics program (for the poem above, I just used Powerpoint and saved the file as a jpeg) It’s not a perfect solution but it can be done right now. What do you think? I’d love to hear from both writers and readers

It took a while tonight, but I eventually found a few links to the winners of that fantastic photo competition we all entered a few months ago! Whilst I was not a winner in any of the categories (I had submissions in three of them), I’m still winning by being a registered member here. See, I am selling my work. I use my RedBubble gallery as a base to display my work … and I sell a lot of photographs offline! Last week I had 60 prints (at 6inch x 4inch) of my photography on RedBubble printed at TEDS in Rundle Street in Adelaide . No big deal. Took them to work yesterday. Showed a few women. Within an hour, quite a few of those ladies put instant requests in. A couple just wanted more 6×4’s, and one wants a couple at A4 size. Late this afternoon one remarked that I should have brought in MORE cards for Father’s Day! Damn, but I had a good come back line, Next Year!. Actually, I’m planning to get about 100 to 200 printed through RB before the end of November – for Christmas cards. I’ve been informed they should sell VERY fast! So now we are moving a few steps ahead: Tomorrow we (the wife and I) are getting 20 x A4 prints of these photographs, all of which are on display on RB: From SaharaBelle’s Collection / 1. Walking on Sunshine / 2. Diggin In / 3. Starry Eyed / 4. Like Pollen Through a Straw / 5. Honey Pot / 6. Flower Bug / 7. Sweet Prison / 8. Flaming Nectar / 9. Loaded / 10. Seed Pods / (Yes, number 10 is in my collection. However, because it sold as one of mine, SWMBO has agreed to leave it where it is! Otherwise it would be deleted as a sale!) From Stephentrepreneur’s Collection / 1. How to Bee A Lily / 2. White Gums II / 3. VOC Portrait / 4. VOC Left Door / 5. VOC Tray II / 6. The Cart Behind The Horse / 7. Coffee in the CarPark / 8. Shell Necklace / 9. Tranquiliser / 10. Open Arms Plus two more for a very lovely female friend who wants to frame these her own way : gold gilding on a large frame! / 1. Off His Hinges / 2. Waiting But what then? , I hear you all cry out! Well, I’m forming a portfolio. / Next year I’d like to do a proper photographic course. I’ve been waiting twenty-something years to afford to do this … which is WAAAY too long. After watching younger people around me jump into fantastic jobs and positions over the last few months, I’ve decided it’s FINALLY time to and be more. All the photographs above will be put into a new A3 folder I purchased some time ago. Then I will take that around with me to show off. You want to buy one? OK, either you buy straight from the folder (though I am not sure about that idea), or I take your details and deliver. The whole concept is still being worked on, so we have some planning to work out. My father is an astute business man, and I have a brother whom is a brilliant salesman … so I hope to get both their time-tested advice on certain issues very shortly. / The folder will also be used to convince Adelaide TAFE that I am a worthy student. I won’t write my sales-pitch to the TAFE here, it’s a little corny … but all very true. More about the next stage of this new adventure in my life will be on display over the next week. And I’ll be writing about how we plan to build a Home-Studio and the New Kitchen over the coming months! Fifteen Cards for Sale on Redbubble / / Fifteen Cards from RedBubble / A Big HELLO to everyone around Adelaide who’s seeing more of my photography! Particularly those people at my day job. I guess my life outside of work isn’t a secret anymore! And why I smile more often than I have in a long time.

Dunno if anyone here reads or subscribes to DESKTOP magazine but if you do have a squiz at page 12 (I think it is) of this month. The Debrief/case study is about a multimedia job done by my company – Joe Public (yes I am a proud stage mother!) / They are also publishing a photo essay I’ve done with my Rwanda shots in the November issue.

Yes, one of my dear RB friends and a passionate photograph artist, who asked me to keep the anonimity intact, has confessed to the act of commited appreciation for my art by purchasing three cards: The Communist Party Summer blues Abstract Study I For me this sale, just like every sale, is really a sail that carries away my art to distant shores to those loving my art for reasons I may never know, but only their hearts know. A simple thank you to this wonderful person I feel is enough, because it comes right from the heart with deep appreciation and humble attitude. And perhaps, needless to say, the many thankyou’s I say every day in my heart to all those honoring me with a visit and many even adding a beautiful comment. Thank you again my dear RB friends, your appreciation and attention goes much further than you may think it goes. And it is never forgoten or taken lightly: the gift of time to others is the most precious thing one can give.

On weekends I tend to stay up late nights and sleep in the next day. As a result, I am often reluctant to come out of bed at the start of new week. I thought I would have had an even harder time waking up today because of the long weekend; not to mention the fireworks going off last night. But it was the opposite. For the first time the sun was shining brightly when I woke up. I wake up at 7am, and during the winter it would still be dark at that time so I’d still feel like sleeping, but this morning was beuatiful. So I arrive at the office 15 minutes early, and killed the time by going onto Redbubble; smiled as I read a lovely bubblemail, and then looked at what’s been going on in the activity monitor: Reply to your comment, Comment on your work, New journal entry, New work, New work, New work, Reply to your Comment, New Work, Featured Work…..... Come Again?! What a way to make a beautiful day even brighter; my third feature! But this was a bit different, the first two I was never notified about it; I just discovered them myself among the featured works in the groups; maybe this feature notification is something new; although there is no tab in the activity monitor regarding this. Born from the Hand is featured in the Object Studies & Concepts . My second feature was also for the same piece but in a different group (My first (discovered) feature was Born from the Pinky). Paper cranes are good luck… “Born from the Hand” has always been at the top in terms of views and favorites… until last weekend when Sunset with Blue Trees got a sudden increase in favorites, but it only beats “Born from the Hand” by 1. Born from the Hand still has the most views.

Im posting this out here (and to the universe) to send me a place..a course..a teacher.. a something (!) so that i can really LEARN..fine tune what i know..go further, with 100% commitment…willing to pay money even, about these three subjects: Advancing my self taught knowledge of Photoshop Learn/study Illustrator Immerse & LEARN into the technical aspects of Digital Photography (cuz at the moment its ALL instincts, luck & a lots of try & wing’in it) Can anyone recommend short courses available in Melbourne? A good teacher? I now have the time and some $$ to finally give 100% to myself (no more stayhome-single mum of four kids and occassion to put my needs in the backburner!) and would really like to learn/do all the things ive wanted to do for like, 23yrs now.. when i look at job vacancies..i dont feel like i have a chance in any of them, cuz of the job/software requirements – sometimes i dont even fully understand the sentence/job terms! Haha.. I am all self taught, and i dont know what i know, if that makes sense… Ive always been the type to take on projects/jobs by instinct and wing-it, learn as i go, jump in with both feet..to get whatever that needs to be done. And 99.9% of the time, ive done it :) quite well..if i may say so, myself :P so now..ive got no more ‘dependants’ and its time to look after me! ive done some courses before, and theres a lot of courses out there that put me to sleep..especially tafe/community type ones.. Thats prob more cuz im self taught, and maybe i should be in the ‘advanced’ course..but cuz i dont have a beginner ‘certificate’ or anything.. Ive always had start with the Beginners course. I am planning to apply for NEIS and hopefully start that early Sept. But i still want to fine tune my skills, knowledge AND also start mixing with people of same interest, aims.. The self is made, not given. It is a creative and active process of attending a life that must be heard, shaped, seen, said aloud into the world, finally enacted and woven into the lives of others. / —Barbara Myerhoff /

...and I probably won’t be on RB for a long while. My flight leaves at 8pm, but I’m heading to the airport around 4:30pm. I arrive in Rome on Monday. I hope to do as much sight seeing as I can before classes begin; but aside from that there is a lot of other things I have to do (get cash, buy sketchbook, studio supplies, textbooks, laundry detergent; get some maps…) So some weeks ago I had decided that between that time then and tomorrow I would use my time to either study some Italian, plan what to see/familiarize myself with Italy and its culture, or lose as much weight as I can before I begin eating pizza and pasta everyday :P. Well I read some guidebooks but it didn’t really help me because I was not actually there to follow the footsteps of the words; though I did familairize myself a bit with the train systems (and read some warnings about using the automatic ticket machines) – so that was a good read and to know about ahead of time. Also watched a documentary on the Parthenon; that’s in Greece, but hey Greek and Roman ideals are close and it was still very interesting nonetheless. Studying my Italian; well, unless I study it continuosly I forget… just know a few basics; but in the worst case if someone tries to talk to me and I don’t understand, atleast I know “Mio no parla Italiano molto bene” (I don’t speak Italian very well) As for my diet… I just had a buffet so not doing very well there :P Met two high school friends today who I haven’t seen in 4 years and went to a Japanese buffet, which also had Chinese food and a chocolate fountain! Anyhow time to do some last minute packing (I haven’t yet packed away the items which I still needed to use everyday); will try to come back on RB ASAP just to say I arrived safely; but I would like to get as much personal business done as possible when I can (before stores and other business places close), so until then, Ciao! Oh and I’ll be living with an old couple who have a dog :-D !!!! Hehe, I’m a sucker for dogs.

I am proud to unveil a new painting from my studio entitled, “Segawa Kikunjojo II”. (Dancing The Part Of Yamauba) My painting is styled after ancient (1760 era) Japanese Graphic art, by artists like Tori Kiyomitsu Ga and Eshi Tori Kiyomasu Hitsu and based on paintings like, The Autumn Moon Above Ishi Mountain and Segawa Kikunojo II, Dancing the Part of Yamuba. / This is the first in my study paintings of ancient Japanese artwork. It was a very intense and rewarding piece to work on. Every line and brush stroke needed to be calculated and yet also flow with an ease and grace. This is my first original painting in a series of many I intend to delve into over the next year. / I am very drawn to Japanese art and grew up with traditional Japanese artwork in my home. The beauty of this type of art has always captured me, as I hope my work will for you as well. Here are some photos of my art as it is being created and completed…enjoy! xoxo

Well folks, I have jumped into the deep end and made my first photography book. PEOPLE – A Candid Study in Black and White was a bit of a brain strain to put together but the instructions are fairly easy to follow. To some the books may be a bit pricey but I have seen the results in a book made by a camera club friend and feel the price is well worth it. Enjoy! GB / Dennis PS: All proceeds go into my bank account so I can buy bigger and better photographic equipment so please help the cause. 8-)

/ There are a lot of…
/ There are a lot of things regarding this image that remain as a complete mystery to me up to this day. / First weird thing was the choice of the main figure. All of sudden one day I decided to create a 3D rendered image by recreating Mata Hari, the Dutch-Frisian exotic dancer and courtesan who was executed by firing squad for espionage during World War I. Why I choose Mata Hari? Mmmm…Heaven knows! / And this was the image of her that I intented to recreate. / So I opened my cinema 4D software, imported Victoria 4 (the basic female Poser figure) into it by using the InterPoser plugin; then I positioned her in a similar pose to that of Mata Hari, and from that point on I started the hard task to create/build rest of elements such as cloths, hairdo and accessories. Considering that I just wanted to recreate the original image, and not to make an exact copy of it, I decided to take some liberties regarding most of these elements. / This was the first result. The original idea was that of obtaining an alpha image so that it´d be relatively easy to create a convenient background for it. / I exported it into Photoshop and started experimenting with several background options, mainly outdoors photographs from old buildings. Then I realized that there was a problem with the camera angle; none of the available background options matched with the original camera angle; so, to make things short, have to say that none of them finally worked out . / So I had to went back to cinema 4D in order to create a background for the main image. I tried with different options with no acceptable results till I recall I had this portentous Temple Of Megaera, a DAZ 3D product I had bought some time ago. This time I made a full render _ main figure plus the Temple_ avoiding hard shadows. I still don´t know why I took this decision; cause I use to work with well defined shadows, mostly the hard ones. / Then, I went back to Photoshop again. I resized the canvas in order to concentrate the view on the main character. I knew I had to give up the idea of using a full color image and that it´d be necessary to desaturate it in order to give it a vintage look; but how? / Well, those were the days when I first met Redbubble, and I was deeply impressed by artists such as Martin Muir and Headcrime, also WanderingSoulArt _ navybrat came later to me, or it was viceversa?_ just to mention a few of those ones who can achieve highly impressive artistic results by texturing and blending layers, that´s to say, the compositing techniques. So I ask myself: why not trying to do something similar with this image? / So I search the web for some free textures. I found very interesting sites, image*after, for instance, which is a large online free photo collection. I downloaded one of their free texture images _ sorry, don´t remember which one_ and blended it with the original render by using the overlay mode. ( I had previously desaturated the original image). / And this was the resulting image. / / Have to confess that I never thought of having these results. All I wanted was to create an image with a vintage feel. It was more of “let´s see what I can do with this”, just a simple try, I mean. / Now, one of the main mysteries for me resides on the wide acceptance that this image has had among viewers: 67 comments, 51 favoritings and 2380 views. / But what impresses me the most are comments such as “…it reminds me of an old horror ghost film”, “a little scary”, “haunting”, “very eerie and mysterious”, “the creepy subject, textures and fantastic background…”. / Needless to say I´m more than honoured by these and other comments viewers have made for this image. But now you can see that I was miles away from trying to create a haunting, or creepy, or even a ghostly looking of it. Honest. / I´m very proud of VIntage Study No. 1 and it´s been my pleasure to share this image, as well as the process of creating it with all of you. Thanks a lot for your kind support. / .

I recently posted a series of flower images I called flower study, each flower created in a different color. The colors I chose represent different gems: the red is a ruby, the gold is topaz, the green is emerald, the blue is sapphire, and the purple is an amethyst. I also realized that each gem color represented a different chakra of the human body: the red is the root chakra, gold is the emotional root chakra, green is the heart chakra, blue is throat and expression chakra, and purple is the crown chakra. One is missing, the second one, which should be orange, it comes right after the red chakra. I will look for an appropriate gem to match it as I couldn’t think of one off the top of my head. Can anyone make a suggestion about an orange gemstone? / Thanks so much – Annie
