Sometimes to achieve a goal you must change yourself, but is it really worth it?

This picture is about how I felt about finding myself in a place that defys discription. The play of light on this icy little island is contextulized by the tiny ship’s antennae barely visible in the front of the image. Shot with b/w infrared film with a very battered old SLR in a part of the world that seemed to shape shift around me. I could never really find the words to explain what happened to me emotionally when I was faced with such terrifyingly sublime sights. Words are just not adequate to the task of representing what became a search for the faces of the gods I could sense just out of view. Images like this start to come close to that desire. So this picture then is really about the search for the path that will take me home. To the place I want to be in …. in the light…. taking me home….
The next in my mini series “Taking me Home. Another b/w infrared photo taken on my recent trip to somewhere deep inside of myself. A journey is not always just a trip away. Sometimes a journey is the path that we must take to find something within ourselves in order that we can grow as souls while on a pilgrimage back to our hearts. Sometimes in order to grow and reach our full potential we need to put ourselves into difficult situations so that we can find the truth at the centre of our very beings. This is often very difficult to do or even to acknowledge as it means allowing ourselves to be taken to the outer limits of our potential, and sometimes risking ridicule and not only that. Sometimes it means risking ecstasty and real self knowledge. In order to come to self knowledge we sometimes need to put aside sensation and come to a place of real feeling. Contemporary culture discourages us from venturing in to these tricky realms. We are supposed to consume extreme experiences, but not to live them. We are bombarded with messages that encourage us to lose our truth in idle sensation in order to supress and dull our real feelings. And so our experiences become synthetic and not really satisfactory. But we can take another path…. if we so choose. This image is then a metaphor for leaving on a journey of self realization. If I leave the shore then can I be sure that I will know myself as a result? No I can’t be sure but I know I need to try. If I can be sure of only one thing as an artist then that is I need to risk the annihilation of all ego and expectation of any reward in order to achieve the mysterious and profound that makes my art powerful. This image of a ship so still berthed in this calm harbour is also then me saying to myself …. I am sure that my ship will come in and that when it does it will take me to a place of light/enlightenment. Nothing else will sufice or I can not in truth call myself an artist.
butterfly caught on a flower in the sun. They move around quite fast and I only like photographing them in the wild, so I was lucky to get him like this. It is supporting for me to think that we can reach out to the good things in life in a strong way although we are fragile and small.

SIR, – Now that cricket has been put aside for some few months to come, and cricketers have assumed somewhat of the chrysalis nature (for a time only ‘tis true), but at length will again burst forth in all their varied hues, rather than allow this state of torpor to creep over them, and stifle their new supple limbs, why can they not, I say, form a foot-ball club, and form a committee of three or four to draw up a code of laws? / If a club of this sort were got up, it would be of a vast benefit to any cricket-ground to be trampled upon, and would make the turf quite firm and durable; besides which it would keep those who are inclined to become stout from having their joints encased in useless superabundant flesh…... / ...... A firm heart, a steady hand, and a quick eye, are all that are requisite, and, with practice, all these may be attained. Trusting that some one will take up the matter, and form either of the above clubs, or, at any rate, some athletic games, I remain, yours truly. / T.W. Wills, Bell’s Life In Victoria, July 10, 1858

striving for the epic... / (starring Heston Poppy) Explanation for ‘digital interface’ group: / This is a combination of 4 photos using gimp software. / I fell in love with the poppy as is – it hasn’t been adjusted at all and looks exactly as photographed in midday sun. (Without the stem) / The background was a photo of some rain coming in over the coast, and looked a bit too hazy to be an interesting stand-alone photo. I altered the hue/colouation sliders, playing with ‘hue’ to get sepia brown, and probably saturating it more (hard to remember now!) It also needed adjusting in Curves, where I probably lightened the mid to high tones to get the glow in the clouds, while darkening the lower tones. / The original photo had a hill in the foreground (not this one) which became a nuisance – not working as a silhouette, but a bit of a blob, and too dark and detail-less to be resurrected as an interesting feature by itself. I tried a texture filter, which still didn’t improve matters. In the end, I selected and copied a piece of foreground from another photo, pasting it into a layer over the old hill. Then there was a lot of work making that look natural – this hill was shorter than the last one, so I needed to clone the top of the previous hill away and create more white water and dark tones. I used the clone tool, alternating between 2 layers to select and apply the right colours – and also the airbrush tool, to extend some of the water and ‘rub out’ with dark brown. Using the clone tool by itself didn’t work very well – there wasn’t enough area to get clear samples, and it was hard to get the direction and colours right. / The last addition was the stem of the poppy, which was the hardest to select – I settled for drawing paths around all those spikey edges because it threatened to take even longer if I used ‘fuzzy select’. / Once I had copied the stem over, I had a problem with cutting it to match the top of the hill – it was easier to adjust the layers, so that the stem was behind the poppy layer and the hill layer. To my horror, I realized I didn’t have a saved path for the hill – so had to quickly create another, and disguise any roughness with airbrush and clone work around where the stem and grass met. / I messed with Curves for a bit on the stem, but didn’t change much, as the light on the poppy was fairly high-key and it looked weird if I made the light any darker on the stem – even though that helped the spikey bits blend in better. / And voilla…
Written by ~ Charles Dickens: And Angel Voices Say… The pure, the bright, the beautiful / That stirred our hearts in youth; / The impulses to wordless prayers, / The streams of love and truth; / The longing after something lost, / The spirit’s yearning cry; / The striving after better hopes… / These things can never die. The timid hand stretched forth to aid / A brother in his need; / A kindly word in grief’s dark hour / That proves a friend indeed; / The plea for mercy softly breathed / When justice threatens high; / The sorrow of a contrite heart… / These things shall never die. Let nothing pass, for every hand / Must find some work to do; / Lose not a chance to waken love; / Be firm and just and true; / So shall a light that cannot fade / Beam on thee from on high, / And angel voices say to thee… / “These things shall never die.” / All profit goes to Feed The Children As of November 29, 2009 ~ 995 views.
