This was a spontaneous shot taken at a local Adelaide cafe on Rundle Street East in Kent Town one day when I was out with Dan. It was included in the series ‘When He’s Away’ and was a part of the ‘Living Queer in Adelaide’ group exhibition for the 2006 Feast Arts Festival there (Exibited at the Town Hall) I really like this one – human body against unyielding cement wall and rigid geometric lines. The theme that I was working on with the shots in this series was an analysis and exploration of sexuality – but more specifically gay male sexuality and the universal themes relating to the divide between public and private, acceptibility and unacceptibility, connection and disconnection, and of course human vulnerability / sensitivity and the structures and systems which confine or limit this. Firewood for tonight by flyingdocphotos. / Village woman from Bromo, East Java Indonesia. This image was taken in a small village on the outskirts of the Bromo caldera volcanic region of eastern Java, Indonesia. I was playing around with my 100mm macro lens, capturing some spider pictures then this lady appeared down the trail, emerging from the fog. I stood at the side of the road, smilied and raised my camera as she drew close. As she saw me, she smiled, nodded back, posed and I took a snap. Then (I think she thought I was going to take only one photo) she started walking along again, focusing on the uphill path in front of her – and that’s when I clicked my shutter again, capturing this image.

STALKING TIGER Slowly through the grass / The tiger stalked his prey / His movement long and languid / In the middle of the day / The sun was high and bright / As a vivid burning orb / His body moving slowly / Less heat there to absorb / Gazelles were moving fitfully / Around the waterhole / Nervous eyes were flitting wildly / As the world they did behold / A movement in the distance / And the animals did jump / The nerve ends all a jangling / Each one with quivering rump / Then like avenging angels / The tiger now does pounce / Gazelles are scattering wildly / With a death like spinning dance / And one of them is slower / No longer held at bay / The tiger now triumphant / As it finishes its prey Phil Sanders (aka Brummieboy) / 5/4/07 Thanks for the wonderful poem Phil!

This woman is a victim of a seemingly never ending war in southern congo. She has suffered sexual violence (rape) so severe it has rendered her incontinent. She now exists purely as a result of a courageous charity called Heal Africa, and indeed her own inner strength and faith. I asked her if I could take her portrait and she stood up (which must have been painful), straightened her back and stared straight down the lens. No stopping to straighten her scarf, no preening, no fear. Just an honesty so raw, so uninhibited and so rare, I caught my breath and thought I’d never breath again. I was totally overpowered by her intensity. After I took the shot and showed it to her she smiled and thanked me. It still gives me a shiver to look at it now. HEAL Africa calendar available now!!!
