The title ‘The Functional Forest’ is a play on the term ‘functional foods’, foods that have been modified to contain something additional and beneficial, like more vitamins. A science fiction story exploring the modification of plants for human purposes, inspired by the idea of plant intelligence (a real concept in biology at the moment).

For an entertaining read, journey over to Mark Bateman’s site and follow the adventures of certain personages not too remote from this here location. Three short stories so far.
The fiery shades of fall, cast a special light on the world…we know what’s coming, but for now we’re in denial…
/ The River (Link) The Journey continues…no one told us that we would find such peace along the road…here the water barely sighs as it meets the shore…a good place to rest tonight.... There’s a crystal-arrowed riffle at the turning of the river, / There’s a waterfall where nature teachers school, / There’s a bank of swaying alder with each budding twig aquiver, / And there’s magic in the murmur of the pool! / Can’t you see the cold, blue water as it eddies, sparkles, flashes / In the willow-shadowed reaches of the stream, / And the ever-widening ripples where the trout, in falling, splashes / As the osprey drops his quarry with a scream. / Night (Link) The road felt long today, but now we’re almost there…the night feels friendly as we walk together….speaking in whispers, so as not to frighten the stars.... Moonlight gently cascading down, / Leaves glowing under its touch, / Softly swaying in the night. / Trees stand as silent guardians / Watching over sleeping animals. / Moths flutter about in search of radiance / As fireflies perform an illuminating dance. / Grass quietly rustles as / The warm breeze caresses it. / The earth sleeps under a blanket of darkness. / Sunset (Link)...Made it to the Home Page… It’s getting too dark to linger now, and storm clouds are massing over the last fiery embers as the sun sinks into the horizon….no more time if we’re to meet near the heath before dark…wings of warning overhead tell me hurry….hurry.... The timbre of my voice calls out to you / Like the low comforts of distant thunder / Urging preparations for a coming storm— / But resolving into a gentle cleansing rain / All is silent, but the whispered breaths / That only you can hear— / I am ever, always—near. / Is it Shangri La? (Link to Page) The travellors have stopped at what seems to be an earthly paradise…but is it? Waiting for that paradise is all we can do / Hoping for a utopia / ...A temporary escape / Blissful beauty / Peace and tranquility / ...A temporary escape / Searching for that far away haven / Our secluded hideaway / The heaven on Earth / ...A temporary escape / Because happiness is just a word / An empty feeling / ...A temporary escape / So why not drown ourselves in a blissful haven? / Hide from the obcenities of the world / Find…A temporary escape / That person… / Whom can be your imaginary paradise? / Who is your Shangri La? The Journey will continue.
You must ask for what you really want. / Don’t go back to sleep.
We came up river and landed at D near sundown…in the distance we could see the shapes of some buildings, but it was hard to make out what they were….since we had run out of rations the day before, we were hoping against hope to get food nearby, but it didn’t look too good for that….some of us decided to go ashore and forage…the light of the sun flamed over the horizon as the four men approached our boat. The walk home couldn’t be more glorious if this symphony is playing to accompany you on the last part of the journey. Oh! if this could be every day of your life. Every night / The horizon lights up / Swirls of pink and orange / Fading to blue and purple / Few bother to look anymore / You can still see a piece / A piece of something / Something never to return / For the colors are shimmering / For a moment they stay / Only to disappear into change / Change just as beautiful as the last J. Millsaps This could be fiery noon, someplace, anywhere….the sun is in ablaze in the distance, but cool blue water is at your feet…rest awhile before the journey continues. The sun, whose rays / Are all ablaze / With ever-living glory, / Does not deny / His majesty — / He scorns to tell a story! / He don’t exclaim, / “I blush for shame, / So kindly be indulgent.” / But, fierce and bold, / In fiery gold, / He glories all effulgent. The Mikado It has been a good day and the walk home is gentle and unhurried…time to stop and admire the soft hues of the sunset…there is a feeling of rain in the air, but still you wait patiently for the last rays to disappear. A lowering sky as night falls…the fiery red of the sun at the horizon, the deep blackness of the hills, a feeling of mystery…but we’re together tonight, and that’s what matters. You darkness, that I come from, / I love you more than all the fires / that fence in the world, / for the fire makes / a circle of light for everyone, / and then no one outside learns of you. / But the darkness pulls in everything; / shapes and fires, animals and myself, / how easily it gathers them!— / powers and people— / and it is possible a great energy / is moving near me. I have faith in nights.

Care to add to the tale? This is the title of a new, moderated thread in the Writers Forum The rules are only that each installment should be under 150 words, and that the thread will be moderated to keep the story flowing. Anyone can join in – you don’t have to be a member of any group or even consider yourself a “writer”. Let’s see where our soap opera (if that’s what it turns into) will take us. I’m hoping this will help to breathe a little life into the Writers Forum. / Wish me luck!
Long ago in the mists of time – a time when the earth was young – the Baobab Trees stood proud and tall. They were the first trees to be…
There are many creation myths about the Baobab Tree, but this is one I remember being told as a child. This is a new venture for me, so please excuse split infinites, double negatives, etc. Me in brief: / I did not speak until I was 3 years old. / I could not read until I was 9 years old. / I had 8 changes of school between 5/16 years. / I had countless extra lessons in English & Maths. / I still left school with no qualifications!! / I am fine with this. It is a fact of life. / I returned to education as a “older” student. / And finally obtained a Degree at the age of 54 years.
I brought this image back to present once again the short story which originaly accompanied this piece….09/06/09 *This was a night that shall not be forgotten anytime soon; not by human or beast. The wind was cold and howling like the scream of a young child in agonizing pain; the kind of sound that makes your hair stand on end in anticipation and fear. The moon was almost full but the clouds beginning to gather made it slightly darker than it should be and just a little eerie. For some unknown reason the streets were almost deserted; just an older guy trying to bum a cigarette, to which I replied, “sorry sir, I don’t smoke, but if I did I would certainly share, since you look like you’ve had a really bad day”. As he hurried down the deserted street, I quickly made sure my “stash” was clear out of sight. I was just about to resume my walk toward town when this thing, I thought at the time that it was a dog (although I don’t remember seeing any hair), came running directly at me with such speed. I didn’t even have time to step aside when it hit me with such force, that not only did it knock me off my feet, but threw me about twenty feet, and there I lay, motionless, in case it would try it once again. I peeked ever slightly to see if this beast was watching me to see if there was any life left in me and much to my amazement, I was totally alone. I mean to say, there was no dog or beast or whatever that ferocious thing was anywhere in sight. I carefully gathered myself up as best I could, certain that I would be injured and bleeding, only to find myself 100% in tact – not a scratch, scrape, tear and not a drop of blood , not even any dirt! How could this be?! The wind was blowing with much more force now, but it was strangely warm…it made for a very uncomfortable atmosphere. I managed to walk across the street and look into the window of a vacated house; I saw my reflection and I looked as if nothing had happened! About this time, I was getting very nervous about what had just happened or NOT!!! I am sure I took my “Meds” this morning…or did I? Just as I was turning my head away from the window, I noticed something else in the reflection – it wasn’t a human form and not like any animal I’d ever set eyes on. This reminded me of some Alien life form; at least that’s what popped into my head in the split second it took me to turn around. It was very large, had a huge head with bugged eyes and its arms and legs were way too long for its body, and it had a blue tint to it. / I know that by now, you are certain that either I didn’t take my medication this morning, or that I should have doubled my normal dose. In my younger days I was a photographer and since I hadn’t used my camera for many years, I decided to take it down to the local Pawn Shop and see if I could get a few bucks for it; that’s where I was headed tonight when all this came about. In that quick fraction of a second, as I turned and saw that incredible being’s reflection in the window, I was reaching for my camera (just as I had always done before); without hesitating I managed to get one click off before it vanished out of sight. It had run off behind me and turned to look back at me just as I clicked. If I didn’t know better, I’d say it was a Praying Mantis, but we all know that they are very small and are mainly garden and woods dwellers. This fellow seemed to tower above the bushes and trees, and he was bluish in color with tiny little, buggy eyes, no ears, no hair….this thing was scary. Who could I possibly tell about this? Anybody in their right frame of mind, would think I had been drinking, doing drugs or was mentally unbalanced…well I do drugs, but they are prescription (so that makes them alright, right)? Ha ha ha! I decided to just go home and I can tell you that I broke all records in getting there. I locked the doors, drew the shades and I filled the tub with hot water. I fixed a cup of tea to soak with and then slipped into the warm, comforting blanket of security and drifted off to sleep in no time. I awoke when the water turned cold and surprised myself by still being in the tub. I quickly got dressed and set about my morning routine, even though it was a few hours earlier than normal (making sure I took my meds), all along wondering if what I was remembering from the night before was really a memory or a product of my overactive imagination, for which I was under doctors care. Then, I remembered the camera; thank God I had put fresh batteries in it before I left the night before. (I wanted to make sure it would work for the Pawn Broker). I found the camera on the dining room table where I left it the night before; turned it on and oh my GOD! There was the one image I had captured of this thing; it really did look like a Giant Praying Mantis…..this is my proof, my only hope in all of you believing that I am indeed sane – see for yourselves….. Many of you might remember this collaboration work with Lily Munroe , who wrote a marvelous story , inspired by my image Anna’s Eternal Sorrow . / Lily has kindly offered to submit our work (both story and image) to her local newspaper in Australia for publication. It worked! The Springbrook Voices has accepted to publish the collaboration work in two chapters. The first part was recently published in the March 09 to May 09 edition, and the second part will appear in the next one, in May. Many thanks to Lily for taking care of everything, and kindly sending me a copy! This is me below, dressed as Anna, which in fact is my wedding dress (yesssss, it still fits me!), and holding my copy of the newspaper in order to show the published story. Made a composite image out of it.
