La Rue Obscure is the oldest street in the old town of Villefranche sur Mer on the French Riviera, between Nice and Monaco. It was built on virgin soil at the beginning of the 13th century. La Rue Obscure formed the basis of the rest of the town’s construction on the slopes rising from this coastal lane. It gave inhabitants of the town certain refuge against possible attacks. The ship captains who were forced by storms to anchor in the bay, could make necessary repairs in safety. La Rue Obscure also welcomed precious merchandise, such as wine, in its cellars.

Bush Stone-Curlew, Australian native ground-dwelling bird. These are a terrestrial predator filling a similar ecological niche to the roadrunners of North America. This shot was just after a heavy rain storm, so he was pretty wet :) Canon 50D, 300mm.

Antelope Canyon is the most-visited and most-photographed slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon formed over the course of millions of years by erosion of the Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to wind erosion. Rainwater (especially during monsoon season) runs into the wash that Antelope Canyon is part of, picking up speed and sand as it rushes through the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways are eroded away, making the corridors wider and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic ‘flowing’ shapes in the rock. Lower Antelope Canyon, called Hasdeztwazi, or “spiral rock arches” by the Navajo, is located a few kilometers away from the upper Antelope Canyon and is a more difficult hike. I packed a thermos, phoned a friend and spent a beautiful spring day at Araluen Botanical Gardens in Roleystone. Every year thousands of tulip bulbs are planted and each year the show of flowers is brilliant. These are the best shots of the days, I hope you like them.
