In Llovizna Park (Puerto Ordaz, Bolivar state in Venezuela) there are several “islands” created by the many lakes and streams throughout the park and are accessible by foot bridges and paths such as these. A storm had just passed over Watkins Glen and the warm sun was braking through the misty air in the glen. Watkins Glen State Park is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York, at the southern end of Seneca Lake. This image was captured with a Canon EOS DSLR / Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens. The focal length was 21mm, ISO was set at 400 with an f/8 aperture and shutter speed of 1/30 sec. The other casualties of war—those left behind, are seldom considered after the folded flag is given in memory of their loved one’s sacrifice. This piece pays homage to those left behind, and explores “Feeling the Void”. It features the riderless horse, which, although reserved for colonels, or above, in the Army or Marine Corps, here, symbolizes the soul of the lost soldier. The horse here is a Friesian horse, on which a star blaze has been added as a tribute to “Black Jack”, a long serving riderless horse. The young woman represents a daughter, nearly grown, for all intents and purposes, but always and forever “Daddy’s girl”. Take a moment with me and remember the wives, husbands, children, brothers, and sisters of the lost soldiers who paid their respective country with their life and, also, the lives of those they left behind. Looks Best Full Size This pretty little stone bridge can be found in the Caledonia State Park in Fayettesville, PA, not far from Chambersburg. This image was taken on the Keystone Group – Pennsylvania ’s group shoot June 27, 2009. We had SO much fun!!!!! Image taken with the Nikon D300 and the 18-200mm vr Nikon lens. Shutter 1/250, aperture f/6.3. Post processing included HDR in Photomatix from creation of 2 additional images in Photoshop at an eval of +/- 3 from a single hand-held image after some work with levels and burning and dodging and cloning. Afterward, into Painter 11 for some fun additions, then back to Photoshop for an Orton finishing technique.

Worth clicking Large to see all the stars. 30 second exposure of a moving cloudbank backlit by the moon between two pinnacles in the Gardens of Stone National Park (isn’t that the coolest name for a NP?). Taken around midnight. First new landscape pic for a while. A friend invited me to another friend’s birthday in this amazing location. I’ve never been to this area on the other side of the Blue Mountains and was just gobsmacked as we drove down this valley with these majestic mountains rising on either side. I spotted this vantage point on the way in and as the party wore on snuck away to get some shots and was presented with this vista as I rolled up in the car. Managed to get about 15 mins in before it started to sleet. Man it was freezing with the wind coming off the late snow. The party was in an old art deco hotel being lovingly restored by this young couple and their six(!) children (oldest 11!!) Can’t believe the energy some people have or their vision. This hotel is located in a near-deserted old shale mining town at the end of a valley you can only access by dirt road about 4 hours from Sydney. It was all quite surreal – particularly when some of the girls at the party heard I was a photographer and decided they wanted to do a Norman Lindsay style “bacchanalia” photoshoot at the end of the night – just hilarious but OMG working with drunk models is hard work – “sit still”, “stop giggling” – never again! Still I managed to do both my favourite styles of photography in one night so it’s churlish to complain. Canon 1Ds Mk III / Tv: 30 secs / Av: f/3.2 / ISO: 1600
