By Darren Stones Please note: Updated January 22, 2008 Note: Please click on images for more details. Each August, the whale watching season begins in earnest on Australia’s picturesque eastern seaboard. As a result of my journey to Hervey Bay during August 2006, I had the pleasure to record the magnificent humpbacks as they frolicked in the calm waters of Hervey Bay. I’d like to extend an invitation to you to view my whale watching slideshow. The slideshow is a culmination of work which was undertaken by me with the kind assistance of the staff and crew of Spirit of Hervey Bay. As most are aware, the humpbacks are still being slaughtered for what can be loosely claimed as research reasons. Bearing that in mind, please give your support the best way you can to help “Save the whales”. The link to my slideshow will take you to the Photodex web site. The slideshow has been produced using the ProShow Gold software package. Upon reaching the site, you may be required to download a tiny bit of software to view the show. Many photographers may already have this software installed on their system. I cordially invite you to experience one of our greatest animals in action from onboard the whale watching vessel ‘Spirit’ of Hervey Bay. Please copy and paste web link below into your browser Load Photodex software if required (a minor detail) Wait for show to load Click whale tail to commence show http://www.photodex.com/sharing/viewshow.html?fl=2690585&alb=0 Humpback whale photographs for sale Humpback Whale Calendar 2008 – AUD $34.95 Subscribe to journals via RSS/Atom

There are times when I ask people if I can use their images for my art work. How it works for me and the person I am collaborating with is that once I have finished my work with their image I email it back to them in high res and ask them to post it on RedBubbe for 50% mark up as well as I do the same, so that myself or the other person own the art equally and we both have a chance to make a profit of the finished piece. If you were someone who is willing to let me use any of your images , feel free to comment here and let me know.

If you’re an artist or designer looking for some free hi res textures to use in you work, I am now giving away my personal textures for others to use in their work. These textures are completely free and can be used for commercial and non-commercial work. / If you could help spread the word about these free textures, I would be very grateful. / I’m also giving away free copies of my book to certain people who are of particular help in promoting these textures & my website. / Textures are available from: / http://www.ParableVisions.com Enjoy, - Cameron Gray

Ive noticed around here that there are quite a few photo manipulations. It makes me wonder who created the stock photography of the manipulation. I have only seen one person actually site a link to the stock images. I would like to see more people giving credit to the stock creators if they are not doing so already! When I don’t see people siting the stock images I either am forced to believe they created the stock, or don’t know that they should site it. I also start doubting the authenticity of their work. the bottom line is…don’t steal ideas! if its not 100% your ideas, please site the source. You can technically call it a form of plagiarisms when work sources are not sited. This obviously only applies to photo manipulations/ edits and such. thanks for listening! Pam

I’m honoured to announce Professional Freelance Photographer Mark Ingram from Cobar, New South Wales, Australia has invited me to supply images to his ever growing stock library of images at Mark Ingram Photography . Mark and I recently met for the first time in his home town of Cobar whilst I was travelling in New South Wales, Australia. Our friendship has developed over the last 18 months as a result of our participation at photography web sites and our common Freelance Photography learning with the well regarded Thomson Education Direct. Mark has established a substantial library of quality stock images which are readily available for purchase under licence via his web site. Wedding photography, family portraits, stock photography sales and print sales provide a steady income for Mark. Well I am back home from my photoshoot yesterday up in Rocky Mountain National Park and I am one very hurting unit…damn I am sore as hell! My feet and knees are wanting to divorce me and my back, well it seems to have gotten up and left lol The colors up there were really odd, a lot of areas still green, some past prime and are brown, and some in prime. The lack of wildlife in the park was rather unexpected. Saw only one herd of Elk, way far out of my lens’ reach. Luckily, I took daskibum ’s advice and went in on Hwy 7, which lead me on a chase on some backroad for golden Aspen. And along the road I happened to discover a whole other area of Rocky Mountain National Park which I have never even heard of, by the name of “Wild Basin Trailhead”..and some of my best shots came from this area, as the light was beyond perfect! Never mind the fact, this place is pretty secluded and no one was around. From there I traveled into Estes Park and was greeted by one of the biggest Bull Elk I have ever seen. Harem and all, not that it’s an odd site during Rut season, but him staring at my car, bugling, and looking like he was going to charge me while I hung out my window, was. He was gigantic. There were also 2 other bulls, one with a harem and one alone….the one alone made a brilliant model…he was younger and smaller, however still quite large….and let me shoot away as I pleased, not even minding me. After photographing him I yelled to him as he looked up at me “Thanks dude for modeling me for me! I appreciate it! Be careful of those other males, they’re pretty mean!” lol I have never seen so many other professional photographers in my life as I did in the park. Had a couple follow me around, one getting out to shot with me with his Hasselblad H2 (omg drool fest!) saying “I hope you don’t mind me kind of following you around, you seem like you know the spots”, to which I replied, “Nope, as long as you let me see that and hold that damn camera!” He was from Vancouver, CA, and before i knew it I had this beast in my hands….damn…what a camera….maybe someday when I win the lottery I can afford a $39,000 Medium Format dslr….a lotta people, a lotta random convos with other photographers, and I have a helluva lotta shots….400 some odd RAW files to go through. Sooooo on that note, stay tuned! And I hope you all are out shooting and enjoying the colors! Unless you’re down under, go surfing or…something lol / —-—-—-—-—-——- Now on some with some other news :) Well it turns out that yours truely has been accepted to Alamy Stock Agency and needless to say I am frickin thrilled to death! I already sell on some micro stock sites, but honestly I have never put up my best shots on them, I always wanted those for myself, and I really didn’t want them to go for Royalty Free. Well, being I was just accepted to one of the best and largest Rights Managed agencies, now I can upload my best shots…..this is gonna rock and is quite an accomplishment for me. A big step, as they are VERY hard to get on with! But I did it! YAY go me!!!!!

Having reached the ripe old age of 40, and fast approaching 41, I’ve successfully steered my way through life by gathering items which have lead me to utilising some surplus funds to purchase art. Being a tight arse has its benefits. So, here’s my Top 10 secrets to affording art. 1. When on holidays, skip the expensive eateries and head to McDonald’s for a medium-sized Quarter Pounder meal. Always leave the family restaurant with plenty of napkins for use at home. 2. When visiting your parents, arrive just before meal times. Do not call them announcing your intention to visit. 3. Investigate the best gardens in your neighbourhood during daylight hours for the best flowers to cut. Return with scissors, bucket and torch just before dawn for the freshest blooms. 4. Purchase cheap cask wine and drink at home whilst watching free-to-air television. 5. Never leave coffee, tea and sugar sachets, toilet rolls, pens and tissues in your cheap motel room on departure. You’ll be surprised how useful these items are when putting together Christmas hampers. 6. Search your neighbourhood to see who has the newspaper delivered each morning. You work out the rest, BUT, don’t get caught! 7. Borrow your friends new release CD’s and do what you have to do. Copies of such make excellent birthday and xmas prezzies. 8. Never, I repeat, NEVER, buy a calendar. Visit your local pharmacy during December/January and ask politely for three calendars. If you only receive one, return again the next day and ask politely. If queried, say the neighbours pet Bullmastiff ate the first one. Repeat until you’ve secured three. 9. Fly Jetstar. 10. Gently steam stamps from envelopes for recycling purposes. So there you have it – Dazza’s Top 10 secrets to affording art. Whilst visiting this journal entry, carefully and slowly browse through my entire portfolio of images and select at least one to suit your taste and decor. Don’t be a tight arse and buy cards though. Go for the largest framed print option. Happy purchasing.

Well, I have recently started submitting some of my work to a series of Stock Photography sites to be sold as stock. I am happy to finally be making money from old photos that have been laying around on my hard drive for ages. I feel like these photos are actually pulling their weight now! LOL Anyway, If you have any photos laying around that you would like to make some money from, well here are some of the best stock sites I have found and am signed up to. Shutterstock / 123 Royalty Free / Can Stock Photo / Dreamstime / IStockPhoto / Fotolia / Big Stock Photo Give it a go, You’ll be glad you did!

Well, as you may know, I recently started selling my photos as royalty free stock on several different stock sites. I don’t know how many other RedBubblers are also doing the same, but i was finding it quite hard to organise photos to remember what sites I had submitted what photos too, what photos had been accepted and rejected from what site etc etc etc. If you also are a stock photographer, I’m sure you have come across this before! Quite a headache! Anyway, I had been using Adobe Lightroom to help try and organise things into some sort of order, and then I stumbled accross a program called Pro Stock Master. This has turned out to be extrodinarily useful, not only to catalogue my “Stock worthy” photos and to record what ive submitted where etc, but it also works like an FTP client and uploads everything for me. It also includes a great keywording feature that helps make keywording ALOT easier and faster! A very useful program. Anyway, I thought as I had found it so useful, so may some of you. There is a free trial, which is unlimited and works just like the full version except only allows 5 uploads per day. I started with this free trial, but soon found i would want the full version, so I bought it and haven’t looked back. The stock sites I am apart of are: / Shutterstock / 123 Royalty Free / Can Stock Photo / Dreamstime / IStockPhoto / Fotolia / Big Stock Photo and this program works great with these and several others also. It sure has taken a lot of wasted time out of my workflow, and made things a heck of a lot less confusing. Click on the link Pro Stock Master. to check it out for yourself.

Well, stock photography. A good money maker, or a waste of time?? So far for me (about 2 months so far) it has been good, a good learning experience with the added benefit of making a little pocket money. When I decided to go ahead and upload my photos to sell as stock, I did some research looked at different sites, and decided to go ahead and upload to a few different sites: / Shutterstock / 123 Royalty Free / Can Stock Photo / Dreamstime / IStockPhoto / Fotolia / Big Stock Photo / I figured that the more sites i was signed up to, and that were displaying my images, then the more people would see them, and then hopefully buy them. Things started off fairly slow, with one or two sales per week for the first few weeks. Now however in the last 2 days i have had about 15 sales, which has just encouraged me to go out, take more photos, upload them and give people even more of my photos to download! The whole stock thing works great for me at the moment, as I am still a Photography student for another year, and this helps to fill in my spare time, and gets me out taking more pictures, something that i love doing. So really it can only be a good thing! The money is only trickling in at the moment, however it is at least trickling, and that for me is the exciting part. I believe that if i consistently add more photos to these sites, and increase my skill and expertise also, then this will end up being quite a substantial money earner for me. And hey, who doesn’t want to earn money from their hobby?? So far, just top give you an idea, a couple of my highest selling images are: / / Anyway, I know a few people are selling stock already, and i know of a few who are interested, so I wanted to keep you all up to date with what I’m doing!

For most Christmas is a time of joy, celebration…it’s all about family and of course the children. For me it’s a nightmare…each day that my children count down brings me closer and closer to the day that my baby died. Tonight as I was wrapping presents, my heart shattered into a thousand pieces as I watched Ty playing with the presents stacking them carefully in size order (he’s a bit anal!!) and I couldn’t help but remember last Christmas… Axel loved the bright paper and I spent hours every day scolding him for unwrapping presents…so much so that when it came to Christmas Morning and we sat all the presents in front of him, he refused to open them thinking he was going to be scolded again! The ache in my heart at times is unbearable…it becomes hard to breathe… impossible to go on. How could I have lost such a precious part of me and continue to be? He was vibrant, naughty, and the light of all of our lives. There is a stocking missing from above our tree and a gaping hole in our hearts. —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-——- I want to thank my family here at Redbubble…without you this year would have been unbearable. To John who messages me EVERY day to check up on me. To Rose who makes me laugh and drags me around Sydney on one escapade after another. And who created me my very own angel to watch over us. To Bill, my partner in crime and business…he has listened to me rant, rave and cry. Thank you. To Boz, you know why. To Stuart and Jeff for bringing me up when I am so incredibly down. Just reading your journal entries often make my day… To Kellie who created the most amazing image for me and my family. And to all the rest of you who have given images and written works in Axel’s honour. I am blessed. Here are just a few… The last image here was a construction site wall in Inner Sydney that Jeff Hamilton painted in dedication to Axel while his funeral was being held. We now have a major portion of that wall in our shed at home thanks to the generosity of the construction company! —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-— This Boxing Day at 10.10am we will be planting a mandarin tree in Axel’s honour. It would be lovely to think that my Redbubble family will be there with me also. Please send some really huge hugs/thoughts our way this Boxing Day. Ta! —-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—-—- The Door by Me Imagine if you will, a door / There is nothing special about this door / Its white, with a handle at its centre / Just like any other door / Imagine now that the door swings open / Revealing a field of flowers / Spread as far as the eye can see / Imagine then that there is a path / Which winds its way through the field / Meandering here and there / With no real purpose / And on the path is a gorgeous little boy / His golden hair is mussed in the wind / And his laughter rings out to you across the field / You start to call out to him / To call him back / But he is on a journey / To places where you can’t follow / Your heart breaks realising you must let him go / That he is strong and brave / Embarking on a never-ending adventure / Gently you close the door / Knowing that you can open it at any time / To watch him, to remember / With tears streaming down your face / You whisper “Be safe little one” Axel Matthew Moore / My angel, on a never ending adventure riding motorbikes. / 22nd September 2006 – 26th December 2007

Hi everyone, Thought i would write down some of my thoughts and experiences relating to individual Stock Photography sites that I am using. So I will start with my most profitable so far – Shutterstock Shutterstock was the hardest of the 9 sites that I have submitted to, to get my photos accepted. To begin submitting to Shutterstock you have to upload 10 photos, 7 of which they must approve to start submitting and selling your photos. This took me 2 attempts, with a forced 30 day waiting period between attempts. This did get quite annoying, and I did feel like giving up and just using the other sites that I got accepted to very easily. I now have about 40 photos accepted to the site, after almost a month, and have had over 150 sales in that time. Shutterstock has so far been the most profitable of the 9 sites that I am regularly submitting photos to. As far as use-ability goes, Shutterstock is one of the easiest sites to use, and also one of the quickest to review and approve new uploads. Some sites take upwards of 7 days from upload to approval, Shutterstock is on average 24-48 hours, sometimes less! Uploading is simple, I upload via FTP using a Stock Photography Workflow program called Pro Stock Master which basically catalogues and keeps track of my uploads for me. Over all, Shutterstock has been great for me so far, and IS earning me money. I am averaging about 4 downloads a day, and that is with a portfolio of less then 40 images! The money is not huge at the moment, majority of downloads earn me 25c with the occasional one worth more, but I figure its better then having my photos sitting on my hard drive earning me nothing, and it IS starting to add up. In my experience so far, Shutterstock is definitely the Stock site to join if you are wanting to earn some $$ with your photos, quick, easy and profitable. Just hang in there through the initial review process! Click on the link to join ” Shutterstock “ Let me know if you find this useful, and I will do the same with the other stock sites I use.

I’ve just had a request via Flickr by Getty Images to use seven of my pics for their stock. I’ve never pursued stock for selling pics as an option before. Does anyone have experience with Getty? They specified it isn’t Microstock but I was wondering what other people’s experience has been with Getty. Thanks

Hi All! Well I have finally got a little bit of time to write some of my experiences about another of my stock sites, Dreamstime. Dreamstime is my 2nd most profitable sits so far, and is growing quite steadily. This site is very user friendly, and also a lot easier to get accepted to then some of the other sites, noticeably Shutterstock which took me several attempts to pass the initial review process. Dreamstime however I got accepted straight away, uploaded my photos and then once they were accepted, they started selling almost immediately. One annoying thing with this site, is the review time for uploaded photos. On Dreamstime this review time is about a week, by far the longest out of any of the sites that i currently are submitting to. This can get annoying, especially to begin with when you just want them accepted and to start selling, however after a while I don’t really notice anymore anyway. The submitting process for photos to Dreamstime is really quite simple, using either the website or FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to upload the photos, and then assigning keywords and categories for each photo. The process is quite streamlined and doesn’t take very long at all. Not quite as good as sites such as Shutterstock which is far and a way the simplest of the lot, but Dreamstime is not bad at all. I am hoping for my first payout from Dreamstime in the next month or so, which will be nice, until then i will just keep submitting, and watching my sales stats increase. If you would like to try for yourself, you can join here Dreamstime. Please read my other Stock Journal entries for more information from my experiences with Stock Photography. Regards Ryan

Well, its been a while since I wrote an update on my Stock Photography adventures. I started uploading to Microstock sites in December 2008, so its been about 8 months now, and overall it has been a quite positive experience. Sure, people say selling photos for such small prices is not worth it and only devalues yourself and the industry, however, I have found it to be quite profitable so far, especially as I am a student and can upload photos I take for school assignments and then sell them over and over again. I am signed up to 7 different sites: / Shutterstock / 123 Royalty Free / Can Stock Photo / Dreamstime / IStockPhoto / Fotolia / Big Stock Photo I choose to not go exclusive on any site, which then gave me the opportunity to upload the same photos to each site, which further expands the possible market size for my photos. Each site has different pay structures and commission amounts, check out the individual sites for the exact amounts, but so far the most profitable sites for me are: Shutterstock, IStockPhoto, Dreamstime and Fotolia. Each month on average I earn upwards of US$150 total across all sites, and all this with photos that I am taking for school assignments, or things that would just be sitting on my hard drive not doing anything, Well, thats about it for my latest update, I am still uploading a few photos a month and it seems to be growing, as all sites have seemed to earn more $$ the longer I have been there, new uploads or not. Its not enough to retire yet, but it is paying for some nice new equipment! If your interested in trying Stock Photography, I would encourage you to give it a go! Thanks for having a read ….... These are some of my best selling images: / /

Gosh how time flies, its sort of like a Aussie Bush Telegraph with my Journal here at RB. I’ve been so busy working (like everyone else here) and so wish for more time to paint, shoot and enjoy more time here with this fabulous community of artists and photographers. I’d sincerely like to thank each and everyone who has me on their watchlist and your awesome feedback and comments on my work, also to those who accidentally stumble to my page and leave inspiring words and encouragement also, it really does mean so much to me. It really feeds my soul, would be the best way to put it!! LOL! Such a gathering of incredible people, I never cease to be amazed at the talent on Red Bubble, seeing the brilliant work here constantly inspires me to keep painting and to keep on my little treasure hunts to discover the tiny works of art hidden in nature or even the urban areas. Its been an exciting beginnning for July at RB with several of my paintings or photos featured in various groups during the first 10 days of July, so if you missed any, here they are:- X Thankyou to all the hosts for liking my work enough to feature them in your groups, its not an easy job, which I do appreciate, so thanks once again. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx PS: Please feel free to send me a Bubblemail if you have any questions or would like to know more about Abstract Macro Urban Art Group or Natures Macro Canvas Group.

You may be interested in an article I just had published on DIYPhotography.net about a Camera Shoulder Stock I made more than 20 years ago. Considering all the discussion we’ve had about tripods, monopods and other means to steady a camera this is another alternative which you might find suits you. I think it would be safe to say you can achieve a stop or two image stabilization with it! If could be used for wildlife or sports photography. Any type of photography where you need a lot of mobility! I built this one for a 35mm camera with a 400mm prime lens and presently use it with a DSLR and a 135 – 400mm zoom. If you think it might interest you click here to have a look! All the Best and Good Luck Brian

This is regards to my Deviant Art account where I post my own stock for others to use. I hope that you enjoy the new range and find it useful. I would love to hear your thoughts on this: I have always looked sideways at people who went out of their way to do something for you and wondered “Whats the catch?”. / It is in this day and age where the saying “No one dose anything, unless they are getting something out of it” seems more true than anything, and I wondered when I had become so jaded. When had I started looking at gifts like they had hidden rows of teeth waiting to take a chunk out of me? I am starting to think that an artist community should be one of mutual support, learning and sharing. So why was I asking people who were using my stock to curb their artistic licences to create by my need for recognition? I guess it goes back to the idea that, I got off my backside and spent time taking photographs so I should get something out of it. Now I am sure that there are going to be a lot of people who are going to read this and think that I am taking a stab at them, Im not. This is just a personal revelation on what I believe concerning my own stock. I still belive that as an artist you have the right to ask for recognition for the time and effort that you have taken in creating your stock, I dont dispute that right. I respect your rights and follow your guidelines, respecting you and thanking you for your stock. For it is with your help that I have been able to create the artworks that I have. But I was thinking to myself “If someone uses my stock and creates a completely new artwork from my stock, is it my right to tell them that they can or cant create a print or add them to their other artist accounts, when the resulting artwork is from their own imagination?” / It just makes it hard for them to be able to follow their creative voices when they are following about eight sets of different rules. So I have gone though my gallery and made a majority of it UNRESTRICTED STOCK, so that it is easier for all of you out there who would like to create and cant afford ot purchase stock. So use it as you will, post it where you want, sell it as a print without my permission…Because the finished artwork is the result of your own ideas, and I do not claim any rights over them. WHAT IS UNRESTRICTED STOCK? / Unrestricted stock can be used for both personal and commercial projects, but it cannot be redistributed as stock. You are not required to obtain permission prior to using the stock off site or in DA prints. The only requirements are that the stock provider be notified and credited. / New Folder The only rules that apply are to my MODEL STOCK (as with any model stock that is out there) and because they are of people you do need to follow the rules: 1. FOR DEVIANTART USE ONLY. ASK PERMISSION BEFORE POSTING ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE NET!!! THE MODEL HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE YOUR REQUEST IF SHE/HE BELIEVES THAT THE SITE IS INAPROPRIATE OR THE ARTWORK IS UNACCEPTABLE. 2. NO RACIAL, HATE OR PRONOGRAPHIC WORKS OF ART ARE TO BE CREATED FROM THESE SHOTS. IT CAN BE DAMAGING TO THE MODELS REPUTATION AND LEAD TO LOSS OF A JOB OR LAW SUIT. 3. YOU NEED TO ASK PERMISSION BEFORE CREATING A PRINT. YOU ARE INITIALLY ASKING PERMISSION TO SELL THE PERSONS BODY/IMAGE. 4. YOU MUST CREDIT AND LINK THE ARTWORK BACK TO THIS WEBACCOUNT ON DEVIANTART, AND SEND A LINK VIA NOTE TO ME SO THAT I CAN VIEW THE ARTWORK AND SEE IF IT IS ACCEPTABLE FOR PUBLICATION. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS WILL BE FOLLOWED UP BY SERVIER CONSIQUENCES – LIKE ME SUEING YOU FOR DEFFIMATION!! If you are unsure of an image in my Gallery send me a note and ask. I do not require you to do this, but it would be nice if you took the time to fave the stock images that you use in your artworks as a thank you.
