Lago di Garda (Lake Garda) is the largest lake in Italy. Its northern part is surrounded by mountains, of which the Monte Baldo range (on the eastern shore of the lake, shown far on the left side of this photograph) is the most popular by tourists. / After waiting hours for free parking space and cable-car on a sunny day in August, one has to share Monte Baldo with crowds of other tourists. That seemed very unappealing to us so we better decided to climb Monte Stivo located to the north-east of the lake. / 2059 meters above the sea level, Monte Stivo offers stunning view of the Lake Garda as well as many beautiful mountains including the Adamello and Brenta groups. Taken in August 2001 on a cheap negative using a 28-80mm kit lens, the original photograph was not really rich in details; therefore I have applied the watercolor filter to improve the perception of overall sharpness in the image. Finally, I have converted it to black & white. As you can see, there are some blown-out highlight in the lower clouds, that were much brighter than the rest of what we have seen. I have decided not to retouch the blown-outs to keep the (maybe a bit surreal) mood of the image.
Dianthus is a genus of about 300 species of flowering plants in the family Caryophyllaceae, native mainly to Europe and Asia, with a few species extending south to north Africa, and one species in arctic North America. Common names include carnation, pink and sweet william. The name Dianthus is from the Greek words dios (‘god’) and anthos (‘flower’), and was cited by the Greek botanist Theophrastus. / [From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia] Original photograph taken on the slopes of Monte Stivo: Lighter version: Also available as a card/wall art:

Preferring tranquility to tourist crowds, we climbed the Monte Stivo, northeast from Lago di Garda (Lake Garda), rather than very popular Monte Baldo. The horse we met on the Monte Stivo’s slopes was only interested in grazing the green grass, but we admired the beautiful vistas of the lake and surrounding mountains. Taken in August 2001. Canon EOS 500N, 28-80mm. Post-processing, mostly to correct not-that-perfect optical qualities of the lens (character of the photograph not changed): some color & brightness corrections, retouching, dodge&burn, blend modes, sharpening (HighPass + Edges/UnsharpMask). Mist and clouds… White darkness! Walking through a cloud… And then you can suddenly hear it: distant and quiet beeping, getting closer and closer. At that moment, clouds tear apart and you can see him for a moment, a paraglider, gliding slowly just above the cloud, just above your head! You would watch him, fascinated, until another cloud covers the show… Taken at the Monte Stivo’s slopes, high above the Lago di Garda (Lake Garda), Italy. / August 2001. Canon EOS 500N, Canon 28-80. Post-processing: retouch, convert to B&W, crop. [a hint for card buyers: please set the backing color to black, otherwise a very thin white stripe may be left on the bottom of the card]
