Craig’s Hut on Mt Stirling in the Victorian High Country was built for the filming of The Man From Snowy River. / Lost only recently in the fires that swept the High Country an major effort is now underway to rebuild the hut. / The hut and it’s location with it’s magnificent views has become a major tourist attraction for both 4wd enthusiasts and the touring public. / This image of the hut was taken about 10 months before the fires swept through.

  • As i was driving home from our day out i seen the Castle in the distance and thought i just had to get a shot . / A BIT OF THE HISTORY: / During a long and bloody history Stirling Castle has been attacked or besieged at least 16 times. Three battles have been fought in its immediate vicinity, two of which were turning points in Scottish history: and a fourth equally important battle took place just a few miles to the north. A number of Scottish Kings and Queens have been baptised, or crowned, or died within or near Stirling Castle. And at least one King was murdered nearby: while another committed murder within its walls. Much of the History of Scotland has been played out at Stirling Castle or within sight of it… / A site as important as the castle rock at Stirling, guarding as it does the lowest crossing point of the River Forth, would have been of strategic interest to anyone wanting to control central Scotland. There is, however, no actual evidence that the Romans or the Votadini, or the Picts who fought over this ground in the first millennium A.D. fortified the rock: it simply seems highly likely that they would have done. And it is sadly only an attractive theory that the legend of Camelot is based on a castle here during King Arthur’s conquest of parts of Scotland in the 6th Century. / http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/

  • Wallace
    by Alan Findlater

    US$4.66–US$106.40

The National Wallace Monument (generally known as the Wallace Monument) is a tower standing on the summit of Abbey Craig, a hilltop near Stirling in Scotland. It commemorates Sir William Wallace, the 13th century Scottish hero. [1] The tower was constructed following a fundraising campaign which accompanied a resurgence of Scottish national identity in the 19th century. In addition to public subscription, it was partially funded by contributions from a number of foreign donors, including Italian national leader Giuseppe Garibaldi. Completed in 1869 to the designs of architect John Thomas Rochead at a cost of £18,0002, the monument is a 220 foot sandstone tower, built in the Victorian Gothic style. It stands on the Abbey Craig, a volcanic crag above Cambuskenneth Abbey, from which Wallace was said to have watched the gathering of the army of English king Edward I, just before the Battle of Stirling Bridge. The monument is open to the general public. Visitors climb the 246 step spiral staircase to the viewing gallery inside the monument’s crown, which provides expansive views of the Ochil Hills and the Forth Valley. A number of artifacts believed to belong to Wallace are on display inside the monument, including the Wallace Sword, a 5 foot 6 inch-long claymore.

The vast Great Hall, which dates from the end of the Middle Ages, has been restored to its medieval glory and was formally opened by the Queen on St Andrews Day, 1999. Built by James IV in 1503, it was converted to a four storey military barracks in the 19th Century. The Hall has been restored with a new oak hammerbeam roof, restored wall walks, leadlight windows and interior galleries. Please view large!

  • Stirling Bridge, Scotland
    by Gwenda Oxley

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Scanned from a photo I took when on holiday. !The Battle of Stirling Bridge was a battle of the First War of Scottish Independence. On September 11, 1297, the forces of Andrew de Moray and William Wallace defeated the combined English forces of John de Warenne, 7th Earl of Surrey and Hugh de Cressingham near Stirling, on the River Forth!

  • A fisherman's faithful friend
    by ShaunW

    US$3.99–US$91.20

Taken with a Canon 50D, Sigma 10-20 lens at 10mm, F11, shutter speed 1/100 second, ISO100, tweaked in Photoshop Whilst in Stirling we had a look around at the surrounding area. From this view you can see the old bridge in Stirling on the right, in the distance at the top of the hill is Stirling castle! This bridge was built around 1500 and was the lowest bridging point over the River Forth for almost four centuries. Duties were levied on goods entering the Burgh and customs men sat in a covered booth in a recess in the middle of the bridge. In 1571 a gallows was erected on the bridge to hang Archbishop Hamilton. In 1745, the Southernmost arch was blown up by general Blackney to prevent the Highlanders from crossing. Please view large

  • Passages...
    by GerryMac

    US$3.99–US$43.32

I took this at Stirling Castle… one of my favourite spots I love to visit when I am in Scotland. When I look at this image I can’t help but think about the history of the place and what it would have been like ‘away back then’...... I could almost hear the metallic sound of armour as someone rushed through this passageway and the noise echoing off the thick stone walls oh to glimpse a few seconds…..

  • Towering over the surrounding countryside in the heart of Scotland’s Braveheart country Stirling Castle is one of the great royal residences of Scottish history. A visit to this famous medieval castle is an essential part of any visit to central Scotland. It rivals even Edinburgh Castle for its sheer magnificence. It looks spectacular during the day, and enchanting when it is illuminated in a foggy night. / / / / Framed Print /
