Christina Rossetti’s poem which encourages respect of all forms of life goes well with this macro of a green stink bug nymph or an immature stink bug. I had a hard time identifying this bug because I mistook it for a beetle. Then, I realized that it was what is termed a true bug because its feelers have four or fewer segments. That led me to the true bug section of bug ID’s and voila: the green stink bug nymph!

St. Francis referred to his animal friends as brothers and sisters. One day, this crow landed on the statue of St. Francis that stands over a fountain in my backyard. I recollected the stories of the great saint and of his comradeship with all of nature and composed this little conversational poem that might have transpired between Brother Francis and Brother Crow. I’d like to dedicate this to my friend, Father Charles Faso, O.F.M., a Franciscan priest and storyteller extraordinaire!

While this work in traditional representational style is depicting a beautiful country scene in early morning light, it is designed to be a comment on two common responses humans have when we are gifted with something… / – 1. We can lock it away for exclusive use by those who control ‘the keys’ / – 2. We can treat it with respect and see ourselves as compassionate stewards who care for it and share it. This raises the question of what is legitimate authority of course…

View from Oban Rare Breeds Park. / Rolling hills, rolling clouds… breathtaking! How can anyone really believe that our world is the result of an accidental mix of molecules? God alone creates this artwork. / I look at this sky and expect to see Him beckoning… perhaps to remind us that we are stewards of his creation. What a responibility! Glory to God in the Highest. Alleluia!
