  • Those that know me well know that i was shattered when Craig’s hut burnt down in the 2006/2007 bush fires. I have loved “The Man from Snowy River” since i was a little girl and it had always been a dream of mine to one day see Craig’s hut in the flesh… then it was ravished by fire last year… well they have rebuilt it and thatks to our wonderful friend whom we stay with in Bonnie Doon, he took me and my family up there, knowing how much it would mean to me… / I will be returning here as i have fallen in love with the High country!

  • I’m often asked asked how much my paintings cost or how much to charge for commissioned portraits. It always leaves me cold. My original oil paintings are priceless and irreplaceable to me. I guess, like most artworks, they are worth whatever someone is prepared to pay. Be it 1 pound or 3 million pounds. Originally I was going to paint a portrait using copper coins at different stages of oxidization. The shiny new ones for highlights and the older darker ones for the shadows. I still might. This one cost £45. OK it didn’t really but there are 4500 (digital) 1p coins in it.. Digital Collage, 2008 A detailed view…

Looking for a reliable but simple fractal program to start with? Lose your fractal virginity with Sterling and you’ll respect yourself in the morning! The price is right: a free download. The size is right: tiny enough to work on your grandfather’s computer (if his processor has been updated a bit), the interface isn’t hard for a beginner (Trial and error is relatively painless); and educational: you get to see all those hairy algorithms and formulas the program is using to make your fractals. YOU don’t need to know basic arithmetic to create anything you want from the program. Like almost all software, it has a furry downside so here’s the honest scoop. There’s no “back” button so if you liked something and added something horrid to it, you can’t just click “undo” and get your previous work back. And unless you can remember all the steps you took to do it the 1st time, you are outta luck and may as well start over. Second, the program starts with the same beginning image all the time. That may not seem like a bad thing until you start repeating yourself and everything you create becomes derivative of the last thing you created. For me, this is a major drawback because I’m not intimidated by facing a blank screen but for the average person doing beginning fractal work, this isn’t a nasty drawback. Finally, the program looks thin because it only deals with fractals in 2 dimensions. But your TV is only in 2D, most likely the screen you’re reading this on is 2D, and 3D is WILDLY more complex. After all, you’re just starting out with fractals so working with far more tool than you understand (or can understand on your own) will do nothing but confuse you for longer. Sterling DOES do something many programs don’t do as well: bright and consistent colours abound. In fact, you can make something bright enough to give yourself a nosebleed! Also, Sterling is a real fractal program making real fractals. There’s currently some controversy over one program in particular because it has the title of ‘fractal’ and doesn’t create true fractals. Well, some of the older but still commonly used programs don’t appear to be creating anything like a real fractal either. Both Apophysis 2.02 and Chaoscope create things that you can’t magnify forever and always get the original fractal. Unless there’s a new definition of ‘fractal’ – and there might be, taking into account randomness – these programs don’t qualify as creating real fractals any more than the most controversial programs. Bottom line: Sterling is a great program for beginners and it’s still interesting enough for me to use after upgrading to 3D and more complex programs. It’s easy to get it and you’ll have fun using it. OK, don’t say I never give you anything for free! :-D

  • This is one that REALLY didn’t come out as planned. The more I dug into this Sterling fractal, the more I was surprised to see the worms popping up and looking meaner than ever each time. I finally surrendered to them and I offer their nightmarish image to you so we can both have a sleepless night. :-D
