When confronted with their bigotry, making unpleasantly sterotypical remarks on people from some “looked down on” group – or discriminating people on that basis – lots of people tend to answer with: You are wrong, some of my best friends are… (Jews, blacks, homos, whatever). Well, then I pity their best friends. A few years ago we were actually discriminated against by some hotel manager in Spain on the basis of sexual orientation. He was really surprised to hear that he was discriminating (and not just following stupid, rigid rules). The stereotypical image of a chav is a white aggressive teen or young adult, of working class background, who wears branded sports and casual clothing, who often fights and engages in petty criminality, and is often assumed to be unemployed or in a low paid job. The term may originate from the Romani language. In its English form, the term is generally derogative, and has appeared in mainstream dictionaries in 2005. / / Caricature of a chav. The term chav has many regional alternatives; its North East England variant charva or charv, used in Tyne and Wear. Charver was a common word of wide but not all-embracing popularity in Newcastle throughout the latter half of the 19th century, synonymous with lad or kid, and derivative of chawvo, a Romany expression meaning “a young person, a friend”. During the 1990s, charver underwent a semantic disfigurement, and massive growth in usage within speakers of Geordie and some related dialects. Its shift in meaning was towards that of an insult; at this point charver and chav became synonyms, although the latter was yet to enter common parlance. It is likely that the term chav is a recent derivative of charver, but also possible that the two words are entirely etymologically distinct. Other equivalents to chav include scally, prevalent in north-west England (particularly Liverpool) and townie, a word now seemingly enveloped by chav. Similar words in use outside England include ned or scunner in Scotland, spide or skanger in Ireland, and spide, milly (from Mill-girl) and steek in Northern Ireland. St Patricks Day March 17th A piss take of the famous Latin sentence spoken by Julius Caesar in 47 BC. Caesar used the sentence as the full text of his message to the Roman senate describing his recent victory over Pharnaces II of Pontus in the Battle of Zela in Zile, a town of Tokat city in contemporary Turkey. Irish jokes are a class of jokes, generally based on a stereotypes of the Irish people. Such jokes are, perhaps surprisingly, popular in Ireland. Here, they are often adapted or originated about a Kerryman, a person who is from County Kerry. The Kerryman may be presented as from an allegedly backward area, or alternatively presented quite differently as a cute hoor (especially in the context of Gaelic football, in which the Kerry GAA team has been more successful than any other in the history of the game). Irish jokes have recently been reclaimed by the Irish themselves and reversed to ridicule the (usually English) joke teller, e.g. Q: Why are Irish jokes so simplistic? / A: So Englishmen can understand them. Khaosan Road, Bangkok. 2008. the day after halloween. / I watched in typical ignorant western amazement as a Buddhist monk used a bank machine and wandered down this decadent road. My romantic notion of Buddhist monks being almost mystical creatures unencumbered by the material needs was shattered. I keep an open mind, or try to, and when stereotypes creep out of the shadows of my self-assumed ‘enlightened mind’, I am humbled. I forget how easy it is not to know something. I forget how easy it is to be ignorant. He was supposed to be sitting on a hill. / He was supposed to be sage. / He was not supposed to shop or have a cel phone. ...and I’m supposed to drink beer, make maple syrup and get into hockey fights, eh.
