  This is a response to Craig Goldsmith journal entitled Image Management System . The wording got so long and complicated that I had to test the formatting. Which we have all learnt can only be done in our journals, not after posting (yet!). Sooo … I figured it might as well start and stop here: Just before I got hooked on RedBubble earlier this year, my wife and I rearranged our photography database. Here is the basic tree structure: /Year / Year,Month / Year,MonthDate / Label (Location,Item,etc) / ie / /2007 / 2007,Jan / 2007,2007Jul / Farm Each YEAR directory has every MONTH. Every MONTH has every DATE. Each DATE has its sub-directory’s of photograph types, plus one called FLICKR (for cropped/resized images reside, thereby leaving the original images untouched) which has a subdirectory entitled UPLOADED. But then I have an extra directory entitled “_Red_Bubble”, structured a little different. No dates, just three sub-directories. / 1. UPLOADED (Self explanatory) / 2. NEW_SHOTS (For the new work as I decide its good enough for you to purchase! / 3. UPLOAD_AGAIN (Some earlier works have been reworked or re-sized, thus…) But I do hear that Lightroom is a great multimedia package! May consider it later this year. So anyone considering purchasing a grand program for organising their photograph collection: Stop. Think. Revise. Resort

  Suggestion of the day to RB Admin. If any other exhibitors disagree or agree with my idea, please comment here! I’d prefer the default when opening the ‘purchase cart’ to be on the cards (the least expensive item) rather than framed options. This might seem mad, but there are two reasons: 1. We prefer more sales, rather than none at all. Some people may baulk at the prices of these framed images – even though they are fair and reasonable!! So let them see the cards first. (Some people may prefer to purchase 50x$5 cards than purchase a $250 framed image.) / / 2. I had someone say, “Hang on, this says ‘From $3’ – but I don’t see anything under a $100.” They simply didn’t see the choices of frames, canvas, etc. They arrived at the first screen and figured that was all there was.

  The biggest advantage of adding ‘tags’ or ‘tagging’ your uploads to RedBubble is that you can group together certain types of photographs. / ie. Landscape, Water Colour, Cartoons, Etc. To show you how this helps me, for the past three hours (between watching some television) I have been adding specific tags to my images. Consequently, I now have these ‘Series’ of related images. 1. Flowering Bulbs / 2. Kangaroo Island, April 2007 / 3. Kangaroo Island, April 2007 / 4. FlickrSA / 5. Landscape / 6. Architecture, Abstract / 7. Farm Machinery / 8. Beach, Kangaroo Island As you can see, tagging is important to get noticed. So here are a few ways to tag your work: 1. Don’t put in commas ( , )—just leave a space between each word. RB put the comma’s in automatically. 2. If you feel comfortable with worldwide recognition, Add your name. Either as separate words or conjoined. To join them, use an underscore and no spaces. / ie. Stephen_Mitchell / Otherwise, add your avatar. 2. The style of the image: / ie. black_and_white pens pencil isograph penmanship / ... and whatever else best describes the style of your work. 3. Location. / There are a lot of people on RB (and around the Internet) who’d probably love to discover these places or know of them. So add words that tell us where you were—the country, the town, even the railway station, etc. 4. Use descriptors. / Words that describe your emotions, the weather, the colour, the texture of the objects in the photograph. All these tags help your work to get noticed. / There maybe someone looking for a rainy afternoon on a railway station drawn with isograph pens ;) or wanting a computer wallpaper that’s vibrant red with bubbles. So those words are what they will search on, either here or on Google. Happy tagging!

  After viewing a few works around RB tonight, I felt compelled to determine two things: 1. If it is legal to use, edit, or alter photographs of other professional or nonprofessional photographers or artists. This includes photographs of paintings. / 2. If it legal to resell imagery/photographs of other professional or nonprofessional photographers or artists. I was unsure if it were legal/appropriate to make a profit from a composition, montage, mosaic, or crop parts of an original photograph. I viewed a lot of interesting ‘images’ that comprised of montage, mosaic and composition work , and asked: “Is it truly legal to sell this without the permission of the original photographer or artist?” I’ve seen a few montages that incorporate record-covers into interesting circular formations. It looks nice, but is it legally allowed to be sold? There’s no question you can create it and store it on your own computer, but can you sell it to others if you are not the originating artist? Your work might be original … but the images used to create it are someone else’s! A lot of googling, reading, researching has gone for the past THREE HOURS. Verbal debate with my wife on the matter was interesting. We both agreed and disagreed on a number of issues. Thus, I had to compile the list of sites we read through… These web sites may help you to determine if ‘imagery’ may or may not be able to be sold through Redbubble: 01. Legal Pitfalls in Taking or Using Photographs of Copyright Material, Trademarks and People / This one is VITALLY important we all read, specifically Section 1.5 / 1.5 Will you do something that actually constitutes an act which the copyright owner has the exclusive right to make? / As indicated earlier, photographing a copyright work is considered a way of reproducing the work, and this is an act which the copyright owner has the exclusive right to do. This is why you may need to get prior permission to include a copyright work in your shot. Some other activities that only the copyright owner has the exclusive right to do (and for which you may need permission) are: / 1. Making prints of a work, scanning it into digital form, photocopying it, copying digital works, etc.; / 2. Making a collage from several different photographs or images; / 3. Adding new artistic elements to an existing work (e.g., colorizing a black and white picture); / 4. It’s now 1.40am, and my mind is filled with new information that has revolutionised my thoughts about photographing people in public places! 10. Privacy Laws, Commonwealth of Australia Before you react, I don’t mean to be a killjoy. / I applaud the amazing efforts and creativity of the people that spend time producing their work. But I also want you to know what is appropriate and fair use of intellectual property on the internet. You might find yourself in a lot of hot water if you don’t take a read of the websites listed above! So take care when you the following statement on a web page, in a book or wherever … “All images and content on these pages are the exclusive property of name of artist. They may not be saved copied reproduced or used for any reason without written permission from name of artist.” Take care when you present the image of a celebrity within your montage.   Because the forums are filled to the brim (if it had sound, it would be like a beehive with the lid off!), this is my preferred medium to send my message. IDEA: I’d like to be able to put descriptions and tags on multiple photographs. / Rather than having to go through ALL 200 photographs (which take hours), an option to CTRL and hold several images at once, then send the same tags and description, would be most beneficial. Tagging would be easier with choices of word already used, similar to http://del.icio.us/ allows. What I’d really like to be able to do is add/adjust the description field of multiple photographs. I don’t know of any site that does that already. I’m sure you know exactly what I mean, so I won’t describe it any further. All thoughts from fellow artists welcomed on this. I look forward to any response on this idea.

If the work is quality, you can increase the price on your cards, either individually or as a pack. But never drop the retail value. That’s like dropping your standards. Next step for me is to buy a bunch of my own cards and find excuses to give them to people. I did this with my recent purchases . / I only bought 30 of my cards. Gave 4 to close friends as gifts. Then my friends bought my stock within a few minutes. Thankfully I had enough remaining for family! I plan to purchase about 100 more … just before Christmas! Wherever I meet friends and family .. I promote my work. You are correct … with an ABN, a stamped receipt book, a stack of business cards … we become business people. Jo also has a great idea to pack each card in plastic for retail presentation, plus a great way to convince retailers to take some stock for their shop! I’m working on an idea for putting framed works in local eateries/cafés, so Jo OBrien has provided very good reading !

  SaharaBelle is a new member to RB, but not much of a writer. Because I like her work (both in the kitchen :D and with a camera), I’m showing you some her amazing photography. Thankfully SaharaBelle made a few comments during the upload process – so I’ll divulge these with you. Basically, this post serves as an easy way for our family and friends to quickly see all the cards of her amazing photography. There will be more soon. In fact, some of my collection will moving across. Yes, I took credit for her work … with her permission! But now she is a member, she wants them back. Anyway, here are all the cards of our recent visit to the Wittunga National Park. I encourage people to leave nice comments on her work. Or critique’s. We’re always looking for extra help on how to take a better photograph! You might recognise this photograph! I cropped this one to a square image to make her avatar. I love this photograph … it’s so vibrant and almost blinding! What do you think?! / “This one will make a great Christmas card!”. Her words after this uploaded. / I suggested this shot – because she had the Macro-lens. It turned out a lot better than I ever expected. It helps that SaharaBelle made sure the blue sky was in the background of these shots, thereby allowing a lot more light to come through the ‘field of focus’. / Nice shadows in this one. The yellow stamen look like antenna … don’t they? / Hehe, nature’s feather duster! I suspect it would leave more pollen than it would remove! / I just love how this is the colours of the Australian flag! / This little bee is getting his money’s worth of nectar… / It took a while to think of a suitable title. But this choice works well. / Sometimes the title’s are just so apt. Yet come out of nowhere. / I originally suggested “Toilet Brush”, but apparently my humor was NOT appropriate. / I’m sure you can see why this title was chosen. This little bee probably wasn’t imprisoned at all, but they do look like bars around his face! / This is a flower in the process of blooming. When we return next weekend, I hope to capture these in full bloom! / Hehe, this little guy was filling up like a car at the petrol-pump! I’m sure he saw the camera coming toward him, but just had to get that nectar! / This amazing shot was incredibly lucky. With a dedicated macro lens, she was going to shoot just the flower … but found the little black bug inside. / This amazing little bee was sticking his face straight into the flower, digging all the nectar out. / We think this was an ant, but not real sure! He was swimming around the nectar, presumably doing the anty-paddle (doggy paddle, get it?!). / Here is that bee again. This was the last time we saw this guy before he flew back to the hive… / SaharaBelle tells me this is her favourite shot, and I agree. The detail in those wings is outstanding! / But this is not the end! SaharaBelle and I have plans for more day-trips, even with the SA Central group later this year! SaharaBelle and I hope you all (wink wink at friends and family!) like these cards enough to purchase a few.

  It took a while tonight, but I eventually found a few links to the winners of that fantastic photo competition we all entered a few months ago! Whilst I was not a winner in any of the categories (I had submissions in three of them), I’m still winning by being a registered member here. See, I am selling my work. I use my RedBubble gallery as a base to display my work … and I sell a lot of photographs offline! Last week I had 60 prints (at 6inch x 4inch) of my photography on RedBubble printed at TEDS in Rundle Street in Adelaide . No big deal. Took them to work yesterday. Showed a few women. Within an hour, quite a few of those ladies put instant requests in. A couple just wanted more 6×4’s, and one wants a couple at A4 size. Late this afternoon one remarked that I should have brought in MORE cards for Father’s Day! Damn, but I had a good come back line, Next Year!. Actually, I’m planning to get about 100 to 200 printed through RB before the end of November – for Christmas cards. I’ve been informed they should sell VERY fast! So now we are moving a few steps ahead: Tomorrow we (the wife and I) are getting 20 x A4 prints of these photographs, all of which are on display on RB: From SaharaBelle’s Collection / 1. I’ve been waiting twenty-something years to afford to do this … which is WAAAY too long. After watching younger people around me jump into fantastic jobs and positions over the last few months, I’ve decided it’s FINALLY time to and be more. All the photographs above will be put into a new A3 folder I purchased some time ago. Then I will take that around with me to show off. You want to buy one? OK, either you buy straight from the folder (though I am not sure about that idea), or I take your details and deliver. The whole concept is still being worked on, so we have some planning to work out. My father is an astute business man, and I have a brother whom is a brilliant salesman … so I hope to get both their time-tested advice on certain issues very shortly. / The folder will also be used to convince Adelaide TAFE that I am a worthy student. I won’t write my sales-pitch to the TAFE here, it’s a little corny … but all very true. More about the next stage of this new adventure in my life will be on display over the next week. And I’ll be writing about how we plan to build a Home-Studio and the New Kitchen over the coming months! Are you an ARTIST? ... ... / links to original article Because my comment was getting quite lengthy, here it is: Let’s look at the word Artist. It has two syllables, each of which are pertinent to this discussion. ART ... Well, that is a subjective subject, that is very often objectified, objected to, and made an object of conjecture. Don’t get me started on that word. IST ... This is the important component, and this is the best explanation I can give. The suffix -ist is a suffix which is added at the end of a noun which corresponds to those verbs which end in the suffix -ise (which is spelt in American English as the suffix -ize) or those nouns which end in the suffix -ism. The suffix -ist is used to denote a person who either practices something or a person who is concerned with something or a person who holds certain principles, doctrines, etc. / For example, a person who apologises is known as an apologist, a person who writes plays is known as a dramatist, a person who works on a machine is known as a machinist, a person who believes in realism is known as a realist, a person who believes in socialism is known as a socialist, a person who believes in capitalism is known as a capitalist. / Extracted from an article at blurtitDOTcom . Therefore: If you practice art, you are an artist. Does this answer the question? Maybe not. / But it does bring up a far better question: ... ... Are you practicing/producing art? ... ... I’m not expecting nor wanting you to answer. That’s entirely your decision. Say it aloud if you must, feel free to tell the world that you are an Artist. I say it would be far easier just to be yourself, and to let the artist be revealed.

  That’s my prediction. Set up our calendars now , and within the next few months (if not sooner, and I hope it is), Redbubble will start converting them to the 2010 months. We can make it happen. Yes, we can! Why am I saying this? Calendars make fantastic Christmas gifts! / So I want Redbubble to make the change NOW. My clients and I need to be able to purchase long before Christmas, thus being able to post/deliver to the recipient. I have started promoting calendars already, so I eagerly (and patiently) await the format-change to our calendars!

  This is our pet cat, Mischief . This photograph was taken a year ago when I first got my 50mm f1.8 . That lens has since met its maker, (now I have the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM ) Yes, he is my pet panther – as many people seem to think.
