Student project illustration using collage, watercolour and ink on paper. The brief required an illustrated response to themes of racial injustice and devision in the 1920’s Louis Armstrong song ‘Black and Blue’. The little girl looks up at a high fashion poster of a white woman. A dark bue wash was used to create a iluminous glow from the poster. Collage elements were used sparingly to add texture but still keeping the image coherent. If you are interested in buying this image, please visit my Art and Illustration Bubble

hey my work
I don’t even want to guess how long I’ve spent on this piece. I’ve always loved doing black line drawing.. This one is hand drawn (with square rulers etc) from the centre to 4 layers out. I then scanned it and did the rest in photoshop (first time I’ve done this kind of work on photoshop and I loved it). I find this kind of highly detailed work very relaxing and almost meditative for me. I enjoy it very much. .
Bonk! what it stands for
Thats what she said … or did she ???
Makeba at the opening reception of Sapphire and Crystals: BeyONd Race and Gender standing next to her painting: Acceptance: Polyptych (4) / Mixed Media / 2008-09 / 2500.00 Noyes Cultural Art Center First and Second Floor Galleries January 23 though March 12, 2009 Sapphire and Crystals: BEyONd Race and Gender Curated by Artist and Chicago State University Art Professor, Joyce Owens Opening Artist Reception: Sunday, January 25, 3:00-5:00 PM at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center A regular component of the exhibition is the “self portrait” silent auction, which will take place at the Artist Reception on January 25. All bids open at $125.00. Another feature is a collaborative altar/installation produced on site. Refreshments will be served and the Walter Clark Trio will perform. This exhibition features 23 African American professional women artists. The theme, BEyONd Race and Gender, addresses issues that have been especially central in electing America’s new president and vice president. It features the artists’ exploration of the current state of race and gender, and our expectations and hopes for the future. The Sapphire and Crystals exhibition has a 20-plus year history of showing and mentoring promising and established professional women artists throughout Chicago and beyond. Participating artists are Rose Blouin, Dorothy Carter, Arlene Turner Crawford, Makeba Kedem DuBose, Juarez Hawkins, Candace Hunter, Renee Williams Jefferson, Marva Pitchford Jolly, Nicole Malcolm, Joyce Owens, Frances Callaway Parks, Felicia Grant Preston, Joanne Scott, Janet Sheard, Patricia Stewart, Michelle Stutts, Shirley J.Sullivan, Dorian Sylvain, Pearlie Taylor, Anna M.Tyler, Shahar Caren Weaver, Rhonda Wheatley and Shyvette Williams. Makeba’s Artist Statement: My new series, The Service Series, speaks to viewers of acceptance and change, of gathering for the purpose of oneness on a very literal level, and including public service in our way of thinking again. The images that I have selected to exhibit in the “Sapphire and Crystals: BeyONd Race and Gender” exhibition are in the style and format of work that I regularly produce. They speak to viewers on the importance of coming together, of “Gathering,” of going beyond for the purpose of becoming one in our way of thinking. At this juncture, in order to procure the change we would like to see in this country, it is imperative that we embrace this mind-set now, during the term of service of Barack Obama, who exemplifies this way of thinking. We all need to assist the world in going BeyONd where we are, in order to reach where we, as one, need to aspire to be.

My Artist Statement, written December 2008. / Applies to all work created from 2004-2008. / Since March of 2009 however, my work has shifted a bit and is more focused on human nature. I am working on a new artist statement to accompany it.
Question everything you think you know.
Learn about other viewpoints.
Decide where you stand.
Act to ensure your voice is heard.
Often I will sit and stare at things. I make myself conscious of the complex beauty in simple things; of the world…
