You don’t even get to pass go and collect a kiss of a blue skinned female alien. A Review From A Lifelong Fan, You could call me a Trekkie, or a Trekker I never took sides it that debate, but one thing for sure I have been watching Star Trek throughout my life. I was eagerly awaiting the arival of the newest Trek film, and thanks to Chazz went to see it opening day. Since I have the ability to write a review for a large audience to read I figured why the hell not. I seem to hear “you always focus on the negative’ from a lot people. It isn’t really true, one of the things that attracted me to the Star Trek franchise is the positive future Gene Roddenberry created for humanity, which is something I will touch on again later. But for now, I want to focus on what I found positive about the film. It was a wildly entertaining action scifi movie with just the right amount of comic relief. The special effects were top notch and seamless in their presentation. The cast was perfectly cast and Scotty and Bones were spot on with the mannerisms portrayed by the original cast. The story was well thought out and the script was tight. Overall it was an outstanding movie going experiance especially being it was the first movie I went to see in Imax. I don’t really want to rip this film and I don’t want to say what really annoyed me about the film because it’ll give too much away. And the last thing I want to do is keep a Star Trek fan from going to it, you should go it’s a fun movie. The thing I didn’t like about the film was first, it’s lack of real science influence. The series were always equiped with science consultants who helped the fiction find it’s base in fact. The 2009 Star Trek film’s approach is a blemish on the franchise, it’s pretty common knolwedge in today’s world that the only thing a black hole will do to a ship is crush it in it’s gravity not send it back in time. The second thing I would call a blemish on the franchise is the lack of moral compass that seemed to guide each character through the Star Trek universe in five series and ten films. The third, I won’t say because it’ll just ruin the movie for any Star Trek fan who hasn’t seen it yet, and it still is a really good movie. As a Star trek fan I can appreciate wanting to do a film suitable for a wider audience, I have always felt that if more and more people were turned on to Star Trek the better our chances would be to have a future like Gene Roddenberry dreamed up. The one thing I do not agree with is not trying better to cater to those fans who made the franchise what it is. So as the two writers sit and work on the second installment of the new Trek, I ask them to remember the fans that built this franchise from the rubble of a failed 1960’s TV show to the largest body of Scifi works on Earth and write your way out of this canon hole.

  • New films ‘inspired by’ older ones aren’t satisfied with being sequels, prequels or remakes anymore. A new look and new cast requires what’s now called a reboot. Online in 1996, with the motion picture in 1979, Next Generation in 1987 – now the reboot in 2009.. Lucky your favourite three fingered salute is on hand to press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. I’m sure the more avid fans will point out many inaccuracies in this design, so my apologies in advance (I am but an observer) ;) A reboot of this computer would of course be a verbal command, spoken in a best American-Scottish accent : ‘computerrr….. computerrrr!!!..... where’s the $(#@#! on/off switch?’ Detail: / If you like this – then try… or if you’re from the ‘other side’... • ~Star Trek I couldn’t resist! This is my youngest nephew, age 1, and he had one of our daughter’s headbands on his eyes….we giggled saying he looked like he was from the movie Star Trek. He thought it was the coolest thing…..especially when I wanted to get a picture of it, and we had to ask him to put it back on.
