  • I had nearly forgotten about this bird I photographed in 2004, and it’s funny, I wrote a poem about a starling (not about one quite as stunning as this picture though) around the same time: The Starling / by Zoe Marlowe Time, hearts, wings, true friends bring. / Soulmates share laughter in timeless magic. / In breathless dreams, love’s depths, bells ring. / Impossibilities keep silent passion tragic. The starling spreads her fine and glossy feathers. / As she flies, a breeze dries her diamond tears. / Welcomed rain bathes her deepest longings treasured. / Her secret hidden, her heart impaled by fears. A new day warms on a glowing horizon’s verge. / While hope wanes for the starling, sadly convinced. / That if she weren’t a merely plain and common bird. / She’d fly a tango with the dark-eyed prince.

  • Just the spot for a spring bird to sing. Photographed by Lauriann Wakefield. Through the viewfinder print- a process of taking a photo through the viewfinder of an old vintage square format camera. The specks and black boarder are all part of the charm and beauty of this print.

  • Every evening in the late autumn, clouds of starlings arrive over Arezzo and other cities in Italy to roost for the night. There are huge numbers of them and as they arrive, they put on the most incredible show. Gathering in ever changing groups, they swoop and swirl through the sky, forming any number of shapes and patterns that are constantly changing. It all lasts about ten minutes at dusk, after which they are in the trees, chattering away. Each pattern lasts a fraction of a second – I only saw the killer whale shape after the event when I looked through the photographs. Canon 1DMKII with Canon 28-70mmL lens at 58mm; ISO200 f2.8 1/160

  • Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) Sturnus is Latin for Starling and vulgaris meaning common. By know means is this small but beautiful little bird vulgar or common, As Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has places the Starling on the RED list. The reason being of course due to man’s intervention and meddling with the natural order of our world, with over farming, pesticides and the devastation of woodland and grasslands for construction of housing and industry It has become an endangered specie, although many of us enjoy the Autumn visitor in our Gardner. I can often see them in cloud like swarms flying over the old Brighton Pier at Sunset. it is a spectacular view to behold, as the hundreds of birds display their acrobatic flying display. They love fruit and seeds, but are also known to eat scarps of bread from the bird table. I certainly will miss these little fellows, pretty little song and its beautiful iridescent plumage which glisten in the sun sun . In the winter the bird has more speckles than in the winter. However, a little warning, do not stand under a tree for any length of time, Starlings have just settled down for the night… as they tend to leave their mark on you, all at the same time….hahhaha Length: 22 cm (9”) / Wing Span: 37-42 cm (15-17”) / Weight: 75-90 g (3-3½ oz) / Breeding Pairs: > 1 000 000 / Present: All Year / Status: Red
