Anatomy of the AT-AT / Since the Dark Side started using genetically modified walkers, they found many had to visit the Imperial Veterinary Clinic of Osteology suffering with acute pain in their hip joints. X-rays revealed their skeleton structure was just not strong enough to manoeuvre wearing those heavy boots. No amount of Cod Liver oil would ease their pain. Hand drawn and rendered… Saint Death (also known as La Santísima Muerte, and Doña Sebastiana), is a religious figure who receives petitions for love, luck, and protection. Although the Catholic Church has attacked the worship of Saint Death as a pagan tradition, many people insist on praying to this figure for miracles. Those who pray to this figure are often seeking the recovery of health, stolen items, or kidnapped family members. Saint Death is often depicted as a female figure, dressed as a grim reaper with a scythe and scales; also she can be dressed in a long white satin gown and a golden crown. In this form, many devotees view her as a variation of the Virgin Mary. / Some believe the cult of Saint Death originated from ancient witchcraft; however, Saint Death may have his/her roots in pre-Christian beliefs of the Aztec Native Americans who worshiped a similar figure by the name of Mictlantecuhtli, the god of death, along with his wife, Mictecacihuatl. The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos in Spanish) is a holiday celebrated mainly in Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage. Family and friends gather to pray for and remember friends and relatives who have died. Many people believe that during the Day of the Dead, it is easier for the souls of the departed to visit the living. During the period most people visit the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried and decorate their graves with ofrendas, or offerings, often including orange marigolds called “cempasúchitl” (now usually called “Flor de Muerto” (“Flower of the Dead”)). These flowers are thought to attract souls of the dead to the offerings. A common symbol of the holiday is the skull (colloquially called calavera), which celebrants represent in masks, and foods such as sugar skulls, which are inscribed with the name of the recipient on the forehead. Sugar skulls are gifts that can be given to both the living and the dead. Some people believe that possessing “dia de los muertos” items can bring good luck. Many people get tattoos or have dolls of the dead to carry with them. The artist recommends a lighter colour tee for maximum detail. A darker tee will hide the black line work.

Definitely worth clicking on the photo to see it large. Part of the Raging Stillness series this is a blend of 10 X 30 second exposures taken as part of a series of 110 sequential images during a particularly lovely night storm we had a little while ago. You’re looking at 5minutes of the storm at its height. Watercolor on board Angels! Pure and perfect, the luminous intermediaries between divine and earthly dimensions; recipients of and serving divine will. The spectrum of color in her wings represents a single, concentrated beam of white light entering a prism, and emerging from the opposite side in a rainbow of cascading colors. In just this way, messenger angels receive direct transmissions of resplendent Truth, communicating this Light in myriad languages to all sentient beings. I was in a very positive mood when I painted this one, during a quiet phase when all was well in my own little world. A few months later my dad’s health began its last decline and indications signaled his remaining time was limited. I could almost see ( and certainly sensed ) his life aura fading away during this period, and with it the spirit that was him. During and after that there were some changes in my paintings that only I am privy to. Sometimes, looking back over my work, I recall what was happening in the world and my personal life during the period they were created. Colors and subject matter vary but I recognize the reoccurring patterns. Maybe this is a good reason for us to document our work, so that years later we can remember what would otherwise be forgotten. Here is the birth of a child, there the year of betrayal by a close freind. The winter of deep snow and many storms, a brillant spring, an attack on one’s country, the death of a loved one. Large and small the memories linger, rich and full. The subject matter is irrelevant because on this level the language of imagery is our individual soul -speak. Only the creatrix / creator of these works can summon up these stories from the created material, memories and the emotions they evoke, choosing to share them or not. A powerful medicine, its the artist’s right and choice whether to share this hidden medicine, and with whom…or to keep it silent. May all hearts and minds unfurl, open and prepare to receive and embrace the angel’s message. May we all allow its grace to permeate and saturate both individual and our collective being with eternal, pure light. Like a precious, faceted gem and its sparkle, may humanity become one in the intention and manifestation of unified harmony with one another, earth, and all that dwells upon her.
