  • Taken at Stansted House Gardens on Saturday 29 August 2009. / Canon Powershot SX10 IS. Borage, also known as starflower is an annual herb originating in Syria, but naturalized throughout the Mediterranean region, as well as Asia Minor, Europe, North Africa, and South America. It grows to a height of 60-100 cm (2-3 feet), and is bristly or hairy all over the stems and leaves; the leaves are alternate, simple, and 5-15 cm (2-6 in) long. The flowers are complete, perfect with five narrow, triangular-pointed petals. Flowers are most often blue in color, although pink flowers are sometime observed. White flowered types are also cultivated. The flowers arise along scorpiod cymes to form large floral displays with multiple flowers blooming simultaneously, suggesting that borage has a high degree of geitonogamy. It has an indeterminate growth habit which may lead to prolific spreading. In milder climates, borage will bloom continuously for most of the year. info fromWilkipedia

  • Taken at Stansted House Gardens on Thursday 10 September 2009. / Canon Powershot SX10 IS Borage Plant / Borago officinalis Flowers and seeds have a delicate cucumber flavour – perfect in salads or pop a flower or two into your Pimms! In the alternative, steep flowers in boiling water to make a wonderfully restorative tea. Very showy blue flowers that attract bees and butterflies. Whilst the flowers and seeds of Borage are safe for human consumption, recent research has indicated that the leaves and stems contain compounds that may cause liver damage – so the eating of Borage leaves and stems should be avoided. We must reiterate that the flowers and seed of Borage are safe for internal consumption. Info obtained from the following website
