You follow a path along the wall which takes you right over the hill at the lowest part of the Pentlands near Edinburgh, known as Cauld Stane Slap, to the other side near Carlops … an 8 mile walk which is popular with hikers – only thing, unless you’ve got someone to meet you with a car on the other side … you have to walk all the way back!!

Stanley Park Gardens, Vancouver On my first full day in Vancouver I took a bus tour around the city. I can see why this city has been voted the Most liveable city in the world…it is such a beautiful city – water and mountain ranges surround the city and from every street there is a magnificent view. I stopped off in Stanley Park to take a horse and buggy tour around the park…it was a cold day but rugged up in a blanket and under the splatter of raindrops I saw the wonderful sites of Vancouver from the buggy. I came upon this garden in the centre of the park. It was sooooooooo pretty. 18 May 2009

Unlike England when we talk about a dyke we mean a wall not a ditch … just thought I’d explain that to my English friends! / This dry stane dyke meanders up over the low lying Pentland Hills near Edinburgh. I’ve added a very faint tint to the sky for a little more interest as it was a bit too washed out.

Or not, as the case may be! On Dumbrock Muir, above Strathblane, there is a large boulder that was deposited there in the last ice age that is known as the ‘Gowk Stane’. Unfortunately, i am not entirely sure if this is it (lack of evidence on maps, photographs to confirm identity, etc). However, there are not many large boulders on the Muir, and this one had an ‘offering’ of dried flowers at its base, so i’m inclined to believe that it may be the one. Now, i would love to go on and tell you the history and folk-lore of the stone, but again, i have not been able to find out much about it. ‘Gowk’ is a Scottish word for a fool or a Cuckoo (there are plenty of both around here), while ‘Stane’ is Scots for stone. It is said that you are not a true hiker or rambler untill you have crossed the Gowk Stane backwards – maybe finding the bloody thing would be a good start! Anyway, either way, i thought it would be a good subject to capture!
