  • Cernunnos (also known as Cernenus and Cern) is a pagan Celtic horned god associated with fertility and produce. As a horned god, Cernunnos is associated with horned male animals, especially stags and the ram-horned snake. In this modern art interpretation of one of Cernunnos’ representations, the stag, I used triangular forms as they represent the masculine, while the circles represent the feminine. The triangle also represents the male, the female and the creative power, and regeneration (the union of two sides creating a third). In some interpretations, the triangle also represents the sky, the earth and all the living creatures. The stags horns are reminiscent of Celtic knotwork patterns. The original artwork measures 12.5×19 inches and is mixed media (oil pastels, colored pencils, metallic gold paint, liquid copper leaf, and black art marker) on heavy green Strathmore paper.
