The National Memorial Arboretum at Alrewas in Staffordshire is a living tribute to the people of the last century and to reflect this over the past four years some 40,000 trees have been planted and monuments raised in memory of the armed forces, the Merchant Navy, the Police and Fire Service and the Civil Defence. Among the Veterans who have plots at the site are those linked to Dunkirk (the pictured helmet and rifle), Burma and Normandy Campaigns. The project also includes a Visitor Centre and the Millennium Chapel of Peace and Forgiveness which is the only one of its kind to be built to celebrate peace in the new millennium and reflect on previous conflict. The Chapel is the only place within the United Kingdom where the Act of Remembrance is observed on every day of the year. Visitors to the Chapel and surrounding areas are invited to stop in silence at 11am to remember those who have lost their lives in conflict.

Oil / 5th in a series of oil paintings of Stoke-on-Trent. / This one is loosely based on the Spode factory (now largely demolished) / ‘Spode has been part of Stoke-on-Trent’s industrial heritage for almost 250 years. On 6th November 2008 it called in administrators, who said the china maker had been hit by the recession and left cash-strapped because of a failure to sell part of its Church Road factory for development. In April 2009 it was announced that the Stoke based Portmeirion pottery company had bought Spode and Royal Worcester from the hands of administrators, thus ensuring the continuance of these names’. / (source: www.thepotteries.org)

This is one of my dogs called Black Bear. He is always smiling…usually more than this…but this one just cracks me up with that little piece of tongue sticking out. :)) Taken in my yard in Amherst, Virginia with my Canon Powershot SX110 IS / Bear is registered with UKC as an American Pit Bull Terrier and with AKC as an American Staffordshire Terrier. I dunno….I think I love ‘em most coz they don’t lie…. This old guy was travelling first class in the front seat yesterday, and we caught each other’s gaze. His vehicle had just taken off as I snapped, hence the blurred quality, but I’m hoping you might enjoy this shot as much as I do, and I am uploading this one for a challenge. / / One of my absolute favorite breeds, the honorable Staffie(Staffordshire Terrier) . Helen Keller even had a Pit Bull as her canine companion and helper. Cheyenne and Dakota are a team of hard-working Search-and-Rescue Pit Bulls in Sacramento, California. They play an important role in their community by locating missing people in conjunction with the local Sheriff. In their off-duty hours, they do charity work as therapy dogs. Petey, the faithful dog on the TV show, The Little Rascals, was a Pit Bull. He spent countless hours with children day after day and never hurt anyone. He was one of the most intelligent Hollywood dogs of all time. There are quite a few celebrities who have Pit Bulls as members of their family including: Rosie Perez, The Crocodile Hunter, Judd Nelson, Usher, Alicia Silverstone, Cassandra Creech, Sinbad, John Stuart, Amy Jo Johnson, Linda Blair, Vin Diesel, and Bernadette Peters. Pit Bulls are heroes! America’s first war dog was a Pit Bull named Stubby. He earned several medals during World War I and was honored at the White House. The Ken-L-Ration dog hero of 1993 was a Pit Bull named Weela. She saved 30 people, 29 dogs, 13 horses and a cat during a flood in Southern California. A Pit Bull named Bogart saved a four-year-old child from drowning in a swimming pool in Florida. Dixie, the Pit Bull, was inducted into the Georgia Animal Hall of Fame after she saved some children from a Cottonmouth snake. Pit Bulls are one of the most stable people-friendly dogs in existence. The National Canine Temperament Testing Association tested 122 breeds, and Pit Bulls placed the 4th highest with a 95% passing rate!
