Piece of the coast devastated and rebuilt after the tsunami. Iceland / Belgium / Italy / France / Hungary / Spain / Sri Lanka / USA / London / Portraits / Other
Deck chairs on the beach, South Coast, Sri Lanka. I visited Sri Lanka three years after the devastating 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. In Sri Lanka alone more than 30,000 lives were taken by the 35-foot high waves that crashed into the land on that day. The international cricket ground in Galle was also badly damaged but thankfully the Sri Lankan team was on tour in New Zealand that year. Many people along the south west coast had a story to tell about the Tsunami and it was really hard to imagine ever facing something so horrendous and being so defenceless. There really was nothing they could have done to protect themselves. Restaurant owners showed photos of cars washed up by the force of the waves onto their bumper bar and leaning against trees. Restaurants, if still standing were filled with water and debris, an awful mess and a hygienic nightmare. I remember looking at the photos and thinking ‘where and how would you start to clean that up’. Despite this tragic event, the palm-lined beaches along the south west coast really are beautiful. The people were full of optimism, talking about their plans to rebuild and looking towards a brighter future. At the end of almost every conversation they would ask us to tell our friends to visit Sri Lanka. I hope some of mine do.

The Royal Botanical Gardens in Kandy has perfectly manicured lawns and flowers in bloom throughout the year. These orchids are housed in the observatory along with a variety of other orchids of all shapes and colours. Some of the most spectacular orchids can be found in the tropical rainforests in the country’s southwestern wet zone.
The lion rock rises 200 metres above ground level and if you can overcome your fear of the very narrow staircase that zigzags up the side of the rock, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the north central Sri Lankan plains.
Asian elephant (Baby) Amazingly, Asian elephants are more closely related to the extinct woolly mammoth than to the African elephant. The elephant’s tusks are elongated teeth (upper incisors) and tend to be smaller in Asian bull elephants than in the African. The four grinding teeth (molars) wear out and are replaced by new teeth from the back of the jaws; the elephant gets through six sets of teeth during its lifetime. Where they live India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia and Southern China / Habitat Mountains and forest What they eat Vegetation, fruit, twigs, small branches, bark and roots IUCN status Endangered !

There are various species of bat in Sri Lanka… the largest being the Flying Fox or Fruit Bat. You can see them hanging from trees during the day, and occasionally you will see them in flight at dusk. They are impressively large and take on the same form of Batman’s chest logo in flight. They can fly up to 50 miles to find food but always return to their original location. Many younger bats will fall from trees and are promptly retrieved by park rangers who will then carry them around on sticks and ask for tips. Since a bat’s claws naturally close when relaxed they can sleep upside down whilst hanging from a branch. © Jim Moore / Jimmoorephoto.com

A typical Sri Lankan fishing boat and an island temple – off the coast of Hikkaduwa. This area was devastated by the Tsunami four years ago. This temple mostly survived and the onland temple on the beach was devastated but the Buddha images inside were untouched. For miles on either side of the temple everything was destroyed and thousands perished. The temple is now one of the major pilgramage places in this part of Sri Lanka. I went there with my friends who were paying respects after successful surgery on their youngest son. Featured in ImageWriting: Dec 22nd – 2008
