As a child, my treasured stuffed animal (as all children tend to have) was a little squirrel who went on every kind of adventure with me, and my favorite story was about a lil’ squirrel named “Miss Suzy” – written by Miriam Young, and illustrated by Arnold Lobel. I love the thought of the tiny leaf-boat capturing the attention of the denizens of the pond as it passes by en route to a wonderous place. January 10th, 2009 – WOW!! This ground squirel has its cheeks full and is quite chubby. It will curl up in a ball in an underground burrow during the winter and hibernate. The picture was taken at Seven Falls Canyon in Colorado Springs, Co. ANY PROCEEDS FROM THE SALE OF THIS PICTURE ARE TO BE DONATED TO THE WILDLIFE APPEAL.

Prairie Marmots….. UNTOUCHED IMAGE AND STRAIGHT FROM THE CAMERA ! Generally large ground squirrels, those most often referred to as marmots tend to live in mountainous areas such as the Alps, Carpathians, Tatra, and Pyrenees in Europe, the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada in the United States, and Northern Canada. However, the groundhog is also properly called a marmot, while the similarly-sized but more social prairie dog is not classified in the genus Marmota but in the related genus Cynomys. Marmots typically live in burrows, and hibernate there through the winter. Most marmots are highly social, and use loud whistles to communicate with one another, especially when alarmed. Marmots mainly eat greens. They eat many types of grasses, berries, lichens, mosses, roots and flowers.

(-: The golden-headed lion tamarin is a small, squirrel-sized monkey, about 26 cm long with a 35 cm tail and long golden lion-like mane. It is predominantly black with golden fur to the front of the mane, the lower half of the front paws and part of the tail. The face, hands and feet remain bare. The feet have sharp claws (most other primates have nails) that are useful for gripping and climbing branches and also for grabbing their insect meals.
