  • I took this shot this past summer… it was my first time seeing the performance and it was incredible! / / The Signal Hill Tattoo is an internationally known award winning historical animation program. Each summer, audiences thrill to the echo of the cannon, mortars and musket fire combined with the stirring tunes of the Fife and Drum Band which beckons visitors to a bygone age of 19th Century British military might. Set atop famous Signal Hill, the Tattoo portrays the garrison life and duties of His Majesty’s Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Foot and the 27th Company-2nd Battalion-Royal Regiment of Artillery who endured the harsh conditions of the Newfoundland Station in the late 1790’s. / / Also in this series / The Little Drummer Boy / Toy Soldiers / / Visit my website On The Rock Photography / /

  • This is just one of the many alley ways on the eastside where junkies are hunched over in a corner – shooting their heroin and other hard drugs. It’s a sad state, but it is harsh reality that these people face everyday – every hour. A life time spent seeking their next fix and they don’t care how they get it. 1999 – this documentary was made during the height of the then unpublished scandal of the missing women in downtown Vancouver. At least one of the women who appears on camera named April Reoch was later identified as one of the victims. She died on Christmas Day of 2000. Her and many other of the missing women ended up on the Pickton Pig Farm 22 minutes of this documentary was shot by the “Odd Squad”, 5 of Vancouver’s street police. The documentary is 52 minutes in length, if you have some time . . . give it a watch. It will really open your eyes. There is one featured woman, Nicola (Nicky), whom I know, as I worked in the downtown east side for 7 years. It seems to be a happy ending for her at the end of the documentary. I used to help Nicky out when she was having her paranoid schizophrenic episodes. That’s why this documentary has always meant so much to me. Watch – Through a Blue Lens (not the best quality) Nicky stayed clean for about 2 years, then fell victim again to her horrible addiction. When she was clean – she ran into me at the grocery store, almost unrecognizable to me, she had all her teeth, she had put on about 30 pounds. She was living in my neighborhood, away from the east side. She came up to me and apologized for staring and said that I looked so familiar to her. Once she realized who I was, she teared up and gave me a big hug right there – thanking me for helping save her life. We both had a good cry and I tear up as I type this – because I know that Nicky is back on the streets and possibly deceased. I learned a lot from Nicky – give thanks. :-)
