  • Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) Sturnus is Latin for Starling and vulgaris meaning common. By know means is this small but beautiful little bird vulgar or common, As Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has places the Starling on the RED list. The reason being of course due to man’s intervention and meddling with the natural order of our world, with over farming, pesticides and the devastation of woodland and grasslands for construction of housing and industry It has become an endangered specie, although many of us enjoy the Autumn visitor in our Gardner. I can often see them in cloud like swarms flying over the old Brighton Pier at Sunset. it is a spectacular view to behold, as the hundreds of birds display their acrobatic flying display. They love fruit and seeds, but are also known to eat scarps of bread from the bird table. I certainly will miss these little fellows, pretty little song and its beautiful iridescent plumage which glisten in the sun sun . In the winter the bird has more speckles than in the winter. However, a little warning, do not stand under a tree for any length of time, Starlings have just settled down for the night… as they tend to leave their mark on you, all at the same time….hahhaha Length: 22 cm (9”) / Wing Span: 37-42 cm (15-17”) / Weight: 75-90 g (3-3½ oz) / Breeding Pairs: > 1 000 000 / Present: All Year / Status: Red
