The track winds it’s way down on a grassy slope to the edge of Corio Bay with the You Yangs in the background. / This image featured on the front cover of an art calandar published by BEST SHOTS as well as a coffee table book on Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula. / It also was part of a support promotion run by the press getting readers to write in and try to determine where it was taken from as the location is not readily visable to travellers.

San Ignacio Lagoon is one of the best places in the world to see Gray whales and their calves up close. During the calving season you can go out into the lagoon in a small boat (called a panga), and after a short wait, the whale mum and calf will come up to you. They (mainly the calf) love to rub themselves against the boats and also to be scratched! You really get a close up look into their eyes! Then, just when you start to feel at one with each them, they blow salt water in your face and all over your camera! But it’s worth it!!! / / You may also get to see some great breaching too. / / (San Ignacio Lagoon – Baja California) / / / >< / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / / /

This scene lay before me a late afternoon with the sun peeping through at a low angle. I was lucky to have both the light in the small sprays and a friendly gull posing further out. Aperture priority programme / 1/60 sec. / f/5.6 / ISO 100 / Spot metering RAW capture. Processed in Camera RAW and PS Elements. Beach

With a heavy NE swell closing down most of the beaches along Australia’s East Coast over new year, not even the pools are safe. In a somewhat typical Aussie understatement, the sign at North Curl Curl pool on Sydney’s Northern Beaches says “Pool Closed, Dangerous Conditions” and that’s if you can get close enough to read it without being washed away. A new years day swim to shake out the NYE cobwebs from the previous night is pretty much out of the question. While I was there, there were some much bigger waves/sprays but this one was pretty solid and nicely balanced the image with the pool. There should probably also be a sign that says “Don’t stand so close to the pool taking photographs” or shoot telephoto from a distance rather than wideangle. But then what’s the fun in that? Although the two feet of water swirling around below me was a bit dicey at times.
