A Florida Roseate Spoonbill photographed in Tampa.
A Royal Spoonbill and Little Egret feed side by side at Knuckey Lagoon.
From an original painting by Australian award-winning artist. / The Royal Spoonbill is a truly elegant wading bird fairly commonly found around the coast of Australia. I often see flocks of up to 40 birds feeding in the Crookhaven River near my home.
This Roseate Spoonbill and Wood Stork have been friends for about a year now at my office lake in St.Petersburg, FL. They are rarely seen very far from each other. Most Roseate’s have a beautiful plumage but their face only a mother, or old friend, could love! / This was a cold and gloomy (unusual) day for the Sunshine State which made for a sullen image but I liked the pose.
Roseate Spoonbill shaking feathers to ward off encroaching Ibis’ not seen in photo.
My first but not last visit to Herdsman lake.
Black swans live near the extremely busy Gateway Motorway in Brisbane… There are also pelicans, spoonbills, cormorants, ducks and egrets in this small area.
A juvenile royal spoonbill strikes a distinctively motionless pose whilst being watched by an imtermmediate egret in the background. Imaged at Lake Eden, North Lakes, Brisbane, Queensland.
Diemerbos collection / Diemen, near Amsterdam South East, the Netherlands These are my shots of the day!! YAY  / I saw these Eurasian Spoonbills last Sunday early morning, 15 minutes cycling from my home… well, yes, in my backyard so to say LOL… Never saw them this close… And it was so exciting observing them… / I tell you… I’ll be back there, looking out for them! And I do hope they weren’t just occasionally passing by… :D (PS – I did go back several times, but no luck – I never saw them again, so they may well have been occasionally passing by that very morning… wasn’t I lucky to catch them!! ) Endangered / Eurasian Spoonbill is listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened species – Status: Least Concern / As Major threaths are given: / The species is threatened by habitat degradation through drainage and pollution1 (e.g. chlorinated hydrocarbons)2, and is especially affected by the disappearance of reed swamps due to agricultural and hydroelectric development2. Over-fishing and disturbance have caused population declines in Greece2, and human exploitation of eggs and nestlings for food has threatened the species in the past1, 2. The species is also susceptible to avian influenza so may be threatened by future outbreaks of the virus5. Photograph made with Pentax K10D camera – captured with 70-300 Tamron lens, post-edited in Lightroom 2 and Adobe Photoshop 7.0 (crop, sharpening and levels only) Features This image was featured on the Redbubble Home Page on Oct. 31, 2009 – That really is a great honour! / Thank you so much, Redbubble! / Inside Solo, vol 17 / Comments and feed-back always welcome. A pair of Rosette Spoonbills (Ajaiaajaja) search the mudflats of the Indian River for food. Low tide in Sebastian Florida USA brings the rosettes into shallow water for feeding. Nikon D2H 300mm lens 1/500sec f5.6 EI200
A Spoonbill Ibis perched on top of an alligator in jungle setting. Here’s a beautifully ugly Spoonbill Ibis stands contented on top of a large alligator which is camouflaged in the shadows of an Indian Laurel tree. I wanted to name this piece, “dumb AND ugly,” but I couldn’t bring myself to demean one of God’s creative works. / So here stands forever a fine example of vulnerability, complete trust, yes even great faith . . . or perhaps even . . . / “natural selection.”
Portrait of a Royal Spoonbill. A shy bird that uses its distinctive broad bill to sweep fresh-water wetland areas for food. Any tiny creature – tiny fish, crustacean or insect – that touches the inside of the bill’s tip triggers it to shut instantly. I was lucky enough to get fairly close to this bird….....they usually flee when approached. Imaged at Lake Eden, North Lakes, Brisbane, Queensland.

...coming in to land. As it was, he didn’t land, but aborted at the last minute and flew off somewhere else.
Spoonbills and other water and shorebirds are found in shallow freshwater and saltwater wetlands, intertidal mud flats and wet grasslands. Currently there is a Yellow-billed Spoonbill at West Byron Wetlands for the first time since mid 2002. Many birds are attracted there from drought stricken areas because there is water, food and a safe habitat to breed in.
