She has a booboo
This one of our local Churcches, taken on a damp dark day, sort of the right day for churches and grave yards. Almost desaturated it to darken the feel.
Garden Beast
poi at midnight on the beach
brush my hair aside / & read the stories in my bones
for those with songs for me….....past, present & future
In the bestiary there’s also a garden. It’s walled off though, so the beasts can’t trample it! I loved painting the undulating fin shapes of this piece, so I had to do another. 15×30cm, watercolour, chalk pastel, ink, conte, iridescent pigments and copper leaf on canvas. In this one you can see the shiny copper:
Hedgehogs have changed little over the last 15 million years. Like many of the first mammals they have adapted to a nocturnal, insectivorous way of life. Hedgehogs occasionally perform a ritual called anointing. When the animal comes across a new scent, it will lick and bite the source and then form a scented froth in its mouth and paste it on its spines with its tongue. It is not known what the specific purpose of this ritual is, but some experts believe anointing camouflages the hedgehog with the new scent of the area and provides a possible poison or source of infection to any predator that gets poked by their spines. Anointing is sometimes also called anting because of a similar behavior in birds.
The predatory Red Lionfish is one of a number of similar species widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific. The spines are venomous. Lionfish have recently been released in Florida and the species is now showing up in the Eastern Atlantic and Caribbean.

This is a facepaint I did a while back. I used WolfeFX make-up for the whole thing.
Hot black stone treatment in spa
Drawn for the Brunswick Street Gallery ‘Works on Paper’ show (May 8-21st 09). Another armoured sea beast – this one is a mobile communications base – he needs to be protected as he is very vulnerable to attack. Coloured pencils, ink and metal leaf on recycled cardboard.
Some curious beasts indeed! First time drawing horses…as an adult anyway. I used to draw them all the time as a kid. Not quite like this though. Watercolour, ink and chalk pastel on canvas.
