  • A Crab Spider sits motionless on a leaf waiting for prey. / Crab spiders are not active hunters. They make use of their camouflage techniques more than other spiders and catch their prey with their front legs. The color of the spider is adapted to the hunting terrain they use and is mostly extravagant. They remain unmoved until the prey arrives and they catch it and with a poisonous bite (not dangerous to humans) they kill their prey and suck it dry. They can be found on flowers or leaves of plants. Often the crab spider remains for days, even weeks at the same spot. The front two legs, that are often larger and stronger than the other six, are held sideways, ready to catch the prey immediately. Because they sit on easily spotted places they are also easy to catch by the predators. When they spot a possible enemy they move quickly at the other site of the flower or leave. Their eyesight is excellent developed as can be seen on the pictures. They have normally two big front eyes. Crab spiders are easy recognizable if you tease them. They widen their legs and move side ways like a crab. Their size is between 4 – 10 mm. Due to their nature of hanging out on flowers and their hunting strategy, Crab Spiders are also known to be called Flower Spiders and Ambush spiders.

  • Another shot of the Crab Spider on Frangipani flower.

  • This yellow flower crab spider sits motionless on yellow flowers and then surprises it’s prey. Here, a helpless bee is easy pickens . The yellow flower crab spider blends in seemlessly in yellow flowers, and is practically invisible to the naked eye. I checked in on this guy all day. He sat patiently for 12 hours, until the moment was just right. He uses no webs-just camouflage and precision timing! / Nature is amazing! (Windsor, CT.)

  • Up close and personal with this tiny spider outside. He was actually sitting on the blue tablecloth, which makes an interesting background.

  • On this big white Daisy I was going to photograph I saw this tiny little green crab spider, still got the super macro flower centre though too! / Taken in main street, Ravenshoe, Far Nth Queensland, Australia with Canon PowerShot A480.

  • My earlier in the summer find of that very cool white/transparent flower crab spider that everyone loved so much even when creeped out had babies!! Or at least had ONE baby that I found today on the last rose of the season!! I know that it isn’t the same one because it is smaller and the red pattern on it’s back is lighter. I must admit it scared the living $x%x* out of me as I was reaching to hold the rose still for a few closeup and he crawled out on the petal right in front of my nose! I am just glad that he hung on when I let the branch go!! LOL Gave me a chance to catch my breath before the shoot started:) Loving the new Canon 500D and my new Sigma 70mm EX DG Macro lens!! / Taken in Airdrie, Alberta Canada Sept 14th at 6:15pm MST Featured in: Super Macro Photography and Extreme Closeups and In The Pink /
