Well.. this little critter caught me by surprise the other day. This is a crablike spiny orb weaver. The smily face on it’s back sure makes a statement. /
Happened across this web n a very foggy morning by the river, I liked it.
No red thingies this time.
This piece was actually one of my first artworks I had displayed at the Anderson Center for the Arts in Indiana, I figured to see this on a t-shirt.

Critter #2 I discovered a white spider on my pink laurel tree.It was the first time I saw a white spider with a face on its back. / Crab Spider, any member of several families of free-living spiders that resemble small crabs. Crab spiders have short, wide, flattened bodies. The first two or three pairs of legs are longer than the rest and are normally held out from the sides of the body as a crab would hold its claws. Some crab spiders can walk forward, backward, or sideways like fiddler crabs. Worldwide there are about 2000 known species of crab spiders, 200 of which occur in North America.
This tiny jumping spider is less than a quarter of an inch long and is sitting on the base of a white Arum Lily. At one stage he jumped onto the lense of my camera. Needless to say, I jumped too.

Crinum asiaticum, makes an imposing presence in the garden. The dark green strap-like leaves may be more than 3 ft (1 m) long and 4 in (10 cm) wide. These are held erect and arranged in a spiral rosette to form impressive clumps up to 5 ft (1.5 m) in height by 7 ft (2 m) in width. The leaves emerge from huge bulbs that may weigh 10-20 lbs (5-9 kg)! Flowers are shaped like tubes that flair open into a crown of narrow petals. The flowers are white and are arranged in clusters atop thick, succulent stems. Crinum asiaticum is native to tropical southeastern Asia. It is now a favorite landscape plant in Florida, the Gulf Coast, California and other warm climate areas. All parts of crinum lily may cause severe discomfort if ingested, and the sap alone can cause skin irritation. Floridata. / Nikon D70s / 70-300mm / F8, 1/1000…As is / 1/23/09 – 378/8 / / /

Spiders seem to be everywhere around here; here is my home in Tukwila, WA (USA), about ten minutes south of Seattle. This one lives in my shed, and from the perfect web (s)he spun, (s)he watches my home and yard. I find spiders fascinating creatures and artists in their own right; their webs are instinctively symmetrical. These shiny specimens of handiwork and beauty are lethal as well, perhaps the perfect combination?
