  • Stuck in a rut!

Does anyone else suffer from this? Lately I seem to be stuck in a rut. I can’t seem to get all the fantastic compositions in my head to come to fruition through one reason or another. What I am getting with my camera is not what I envisage in my mind of how I want the shot to come out. Then there are the times that I think I have a cracker of a shot, only to find out when I upload it to my computer that it is not a crisp image. I seem to suffer from unsteady hands a lot, even fast shutter speeds aren’t getting a really crisp image : ( Oh and the other day I travelled a 4 hour return trip only to find out that somehow I had bumped the ISO on my camera up to 1600 so my images from about 20 images into the day were all ruined. That will teach me for just snapping away and not checking everything. I just seem to be stuck in a rut at the moment and am lacking confidence. I know I’m still learning and I know I have a lot to learn and I know that I want to “have it all now” and I’m impatient, but it is all just getting to me a little. Anyone ever feel like this? I’m hoping to snap out of it soon. : ) Gayle

  • More ducklings!

Remember the ducklings I saw yesterday morning? (see here) Yesterday I wanted to take more pictures during lunch, but when I went back to the pool I couldn’t find them and thought somehow they made their way “home”. This morning on my way to work I saw them again! That means they really are living in the concert hall courtyard! Guess they were hiding during lunch yesterday. They were more upclose yesterday, but atleast this time I could get them all together (though they were moving so fast these pictrures got blurry). I came back during lunch, and found them gathered at the back (the little blobs in the shadow behind the planter) They walk around, but wait!... Aww, this one was left behind, and was trying so hard to jump out! It was so funny to watch it step back (I mean paddle back :P) and bulding some momentum, swimming quickly towards the corner. Eventually it made the jump. These little creatures are young, but they can swim fast! (I didn’t recharge the camera last night, and the battery was running out. Apologies for the poor quality) The photos above where from the underground path that looks into the courtyard. Later I decided to go outside and look over the courtyard: And now I know where they live, someone must have provided that plank for them! Overview of the courtyard: paddle paddle, quack quack I gave a few comments today, but now I’m really tired; didn’t sleep well last night. I’ll try to catch up later…

  • / / Attention t-shirt challengers! We’ve been sleeping on Agent Provocateur’s couch for the past few months and he’s getting sick of us eating out of his fridge and drinking his Scotch. So that he may preserve the sanctity of his wonderful group, he’s leasing us a new apartment on the cheap, where we can play our music louder and have all night parties and stuff. Once we’ve recruited a suitable amount of t-shirt revolutionaries, we’ll aim to hold regular weekend and speed tee challenges in our new group We’d like to thank Agent Prov for his support and hospitality. We hope the ‘special relationship’ between the two groups continues well into the future! Come and join your hosts in their quest to make better tees … you can start by dropping by the lounge for a beverage … / / /

I’ve not been around alot lately. All I did was update a few things on the computer and next thing I know, I’ve been shaped. / Not into anything adorable or cute like a frog or a cat or a little monster… not even into a bird!! No. My internet speed is shaped or rather, slowed down (by heaps)... but only from 12noon to 2am each day until Oct 11. / So annoying. My available time to be here in the bubbles is at night (and each page takes forever to load), after my son’s gone to bed!! He came home on Saturday, btw, after a week with his father. Its so fantastic that he’s home safe and sound!! I know, I say that every time he comes home. Its just how I feel. And he feels happy and safe to be home. So we’re even!!! Plus we’re off to Wallaroo to see my very good friend Belladonna. I’m having DT’s and can’t wait till Wednesday night to be here again… but I might not stay long, it will depend on how patient I am with this speed thing. / Not to worry, it’ll be the 11th soon… Plus I may have Thursday morning to play!!! That’ll be nice!! So I will catch up with you all when I do! Have loads of fun floating around the bubbles of our favourite virtual home. Happy bubbles / :D / GG

Here are some results: / Produce – my first attempt at BW processing / Lamp Post, Treasury Casino / Ferris Wheel, South Bank Parklands – alternative development dilution, didn’t go quite to plan / Food Connect Cart, South Bank Greenfest 2008

  • A Fartist’s journey: In the beginning you suck

I am officially a photographer slash artist. A Phartist or Fartist (Australian spelling). A Fartist is rhyming slang derived from the phonetic spelling f-art-ist and bears no relationship to the actual process of farting. Therefore it must not be confused with the popular French vaudeville star whose highly entertaining pantomime consisted of music and sound effects using the expulsion of flatulence. Though, if I were nervous I am sure I could very well make a few exciting sound effects of my own. Generally though, mine tend to be silently and deadly, especially when I am relaxed and visiting a book store. Perhaps that was a little too much information, if so – sincere apologies and please be so kind as to not follow me up the aisle. The popular term “arty-farty” is derived from the first term Fartist and means a creative person who can try their hand at anything ie. art and photography = arty farty. So I am a Red Bubble Fartist and I am on the journey of art and photography with my nifty Canon 40D. My first real professional lesson was last night. We learnt all about speed and aperture. Or for the more technical photographers (deep voice) – aperture and speed. Initially I was going to take this journey on my own but at the last minute the Captain (see previous entries on Lost at sea ) decided that photography was also his life long dream and signed up for the course. The lesson required that we bring something interesting along to photograph. Then after this initial explanation on the use of speed and aperture (aperture and speed), we were set loose to create our displays and then rotate clockwise around the room. I of course took ages to set up my display and so by the time I had finished wrestling with it, most of the other Fartists had already fired off a dozen or so shots. As sheer panic set in, I then proceeded to randomly select settings on my camera, hoping like hell that nobody would notice that I didn’t know what I was doing. I think I almost pulled it off ROFL. After we left the class exhausted and beaten by the villains of speed and aperture, we dragged ourselves to a nearby coffee shop to steady our nerves and recap. The Captain (who is always on my side during stormy seas) kindly said that he thought I was the most creative in the group. Creative??? Everyone else knew what they were doing and brought interesting items to photograph like books and tea cups and shoes. I brought a bloody vacuum cleaner and looked like a right idiot. Then as they delicately set up their perfect shots and started clicking away, I was still wrestling with the hose that kept flicking me in the face when I tried to bend it into position. Nobody wanted to shoot my lame vacuum cleaner either. They they all lingered on the set before – the Captain’s super cool sparkly orange and silver air compressor that he cleverly placed on the over head projector. By the time I got to it, time had run out and I only got to fire off three shots. The first I had the aperture too low and let in way too much light. So I adjusted it. The second shot was rushed because the instructor was saying it was time to pack up. My third compressor shot, the last of the night was bloody brilliant. Thanks Captain :-D As we traveled home quietly in the car, each silently reliving the night’s events, I turned to the Captain and said; “Do you know why I brought a vacuum cleaner to the class?’ / He said; “No, why?” / Well, because I am on Red Bubble, I wanted to create shots that I could actually use. So I was imagining a card with a picture of a vacuum cleaner and the words: You Suck!” :-D / Sooz / x / (c) chasingsooz 2009

  • Studio Speed Test
    by CLiPiCs

Further to my Photography on the cheap / Mobile Studio...

Further to my Photography on the cheap / Mobile Studio post I decided to see how long it would take to set up, fire off fifty shots and pack up again the result was 52 Minutes, yes Fifty Two minutes Starting with this, the Mobile Studio and a new addition @ a cost of forty pounds I bought a Background support from Ebay and was quite surprised at how strong it is supporting fairly heavy Marquee walls I also purchased a 43” 5 surfaces Reflector for ten pounds from Ebay again, don’t critique the shot it was just a speed test remember LOL and Seb isn’t a model so he was getting a bit peeved by this time ! I the returned the Mobile Studio to it’s Home by turning off the lights immediately I was finished shooting and then taking everything else down first, the lights had cooled off enough to be packed away, ready to go Mobile again so for less then £150:00 I have a mobile Studio, and in under an hour I can get a shoot in as well ! • “Camera Shoulder Stock” article on DIYPhotography.net

You may be interested in an article I just had published on DIYPhotography.net about a Camera Shoulder Stock....

You may be interested in an article I just had published on DIYPhotography.net about a Camera Shoulder Stock I made more than 20 years ago. Considering all the discussion we’ve had about tripods, monopods and other means to steady a camera this is another alternative which you might find suits you. I think it would be safe to say you can achieve a stop or two image stabilization with it! If could be used for wildlife or sports photography. Any type of photography where you need a lot of mobility! I built this one for a 35mm camera with a 400mm prime lens and presently use it with a DSLR and a 135 – 400mm zoom. If you think it might interest you click here to have a look! All the Best and Good Luck Brian

  • “Steady that shot” how to shoot slow shutter speeds

Do those available light photos sometimes come out a little fuzzy? Maybe you won’t even try a low light photo. Let’s look at some techniques for shooting in low light that may help. We are not discussing time exposures here just slower shutter speeds. Some of the first steps are to adjust the shutter speed/aperture combination for low light shooting. Generally speaking try to open up the aperture to allow shooting at a higher shutter speed. You can also change the EI value on the camera. If you normally shoot photos at EI200 and the camera indicates this photo will be shot at 1/15sec then increasing to EI800 will allow you to shoot at 1/60sec. And of course the higher the shutter speed the less camera movement is visible in the image. Now get a grip. Extend your hand, palm upright, with the thumb pointing away from you. Lay your camera in your hand with the thumb and forefinger wrapping around the lens. This distributes the weight of the camera down your arm. Place your other hand in the shooting position with your finger over the shutter release button. Now bring your elbows into your body and snug the camera top against your forehead. You now have a mini tripod made from your upper body. Much of the camera movement will now be absorbed by your upper body. All you have to do now is Frame+ Focus+ Hold your breath+ Squeeze the shutter release. Now lean against a wall, sign or lamppost. Spread your feet apart and slightly forward. When in this position and holding your camera as above you can shoot at 2-3 slower shutter speeds than normal. When shooting with long lenses many photographers choose to use a monopod. A long multi sectioned tube with a 1/4×20tpi stud on top that screws into the tripod mount on your camera or long lens itself. Sandbags can be placed on a wall, the ground or an open car window to cushion and stabilize your camera. Emergency sandbags can be made from a pair of socks or small plastic bag. Tripods are three legged structures with a provision for mounting the camera at the top providing a rigid but adjustable platform for stabilizing the camera and lens. Many photographers will also use a remote shutter release and some will lock up the mirror to further reduce vibrations when using a tripod. Of course, for hand holding your camera, a well toned set of muscles help. So occasionally doing some upper body strengthening exercises will also help. In a quick shooting situation you might try wrapping the camera strap around your arm to tighten up your grip on the camera. Or with the strap over your shoulder extend the camera until the strap tightens up for a little more support. Plan your stance and stand your plan Frame+ Focus+ Hold your breath+ Squeeze the shutter release. / Have fun shoot lots of pictures-Larry Grayam

  • Planet Fastlane: Faster than Speeding Bullets
    by syd baker

Recently discovered, the planet commonly referred to as Fast Lane has a collection of huge continents that all orbit the planet’s core inside the atmosphere; some of the more porous rock orbits higher and even more rapidly than the more dense strata, but all move the same direction constantly and at a very high rate of speed. This one is more than 2 kilometers above the water, traveling at over 700 kilometers per hour, which makes it very risky to try to study in detail, and no one has successfully landed on any of them to see if any residents come out to say hello. Scientists disagree as to whether these are made structures or naturally shaped so strangely. The planet core is stable, but all the land masses orbit, and there are some that are closer to the core than the ocean, so they orbit under the water; a few of these have promontories that break the water like periscopes, the closer to the core, the slower the rotation, thus, the outside realm of land masses travel on the widest and longest orbits at almost light speed. I think it’s inevitable that this particular formation has been customized, not only for habitation, but for maneuverability, however no one has successfully explored this place, due to the extreme danger of the orbiting projectiles. New radar and collision avoidance systems are being designed, but a new type of scout vessel will also be needed, most likely shaped like a needle, and able to attach itself to a flying continent magnetically, because you can’t just leave it sitting there! Life forms are anybody’s guess right now.
