  • Another array of beautiful clouds on the Medway

  • Blown glass vase in rippled water effect.

  • This is a photo of a water droplet with a pink background, I used soft focus on this one. This is actually fun to do although only around one in ten or twenty shots even have a droplet visible and then out of those, very few have good clarity but I have managed to get some that I thought were nice. I’m a sucker for tiny reflections. / / /

  • I took this photo of a female mallard on a pond in Oklahoma City.

  • This is the very first time I’ve been able to approach a hawk without scaring it away. It was perched in my neighbor’s pine tree so I rushed inside my house, got the camera, and then inched closer and closer to this noble bird as it peered at me curiously, allowing me to snap away. Then, when I crossed over its comfort zone, it flew away in a flash. I’m not sure what kind of hawk this is and would appreciate anyone who could help identify it. Maybe a Northern Harrier?

  • A female rufous hummingbird shows off her brilliant throat in the glow of a spring afternoon.

  • This guy came out after a heavy storm in the desert. / I thought it turned out pretty well since it was 9:30 at night and all I had was a small flashlight and the onboard flash. / He is about 2 inches in length. Shot in Cave Creek, Arizona.

  • I love Owls

  • My lillipilli is in flower! I discovered it in fading light on Sunday so I’m hoping to get some more photos this weekend. Of course, taken with my lensbaby.

  • The yellow rump warblers are coming to my patio birdbath and just hanging out with the other birds that are enjoying the feeders. It’s a joy to be this close to them. I sit in my blind and they land on top of it, making little scratchy noises with their tiny claws as they hop over my head. Too much fun!

  • This is a speckled bear, at the Brookfiled Zoo. Her name is Crissy. She is one of my favorite bears at the zoo. Taken with a Canon Rebel XT. 12/21/08 Featured in Bears of the World / 01/02/09 Speckled Bear won the challenge in Bears of the World / 02/19/09 Featured in Bears of the World

  • She can teach you all the tricks. Instead of cutting up your flesh, pinch it so tight that it wells into blisters. Then you can blame it on bad skin. Or find yourself a partner full of hate. The kind who will put out their cigarettes on your back for using the f word. And swear, a lot. These things will help, she says, but you will start to feel things again after a while. She will teach you a more lasting fix: push a thumb tack into your breast before putting on your bra. It will stay there all day. But when the blissful pain gives way to the agonising numb she will know it’s time. She will visit everyone meaningful to her. Say goodbye, pray for their souls, and hers, and walk home crying in the rain.

  • I get to see the Rose-breasted Grosbeaks only during the spring migration. They pass through the Mississippi flyway, spend a few days at the feeders in my locale, and then continue their journey northward toward their summer home. Surprisingly, they are quite docile and put up with the camera clicks unlike other birds that are much more skittish. The female looks very different from the male, being brown and speckled. This male lit on a branch before going to the feeders for breakfast. It’s been a lovely experience seeing these wild birds up close. This is the first time I’ve seen three pairs at my feeders and the first time they’ve lingered long enough for me to get some varied shots of them.

  • I was taking down a nesting box to check its condition when I was surprised by a mother chickadee as she flew out the opening. I had no idea she had built a nest and that some of the eggs had already hatched! This is what I found when I looked inside—two newly-hatched chickadees and two pink and white speckled eggs that have yet to divulge their hidden treasures. What a lovely find on this beautiful April day! Brand new chickadees that will eventually emerge into the world to grace us with their lively twittering presence!

  • I’m amazed at how docile these large rose-breasted grosbeaks are in comparison to most wild songbirds. I was pretty close to this fellow and though he couldn’t see me, he could surely hear the click of the camera, but he didn’t flinch. I watched his mate feeding for about thirty minutes; she’d nibble a bit, pause, daydream, look all around her, nibble again, pause, daydream . . . She was so restful and peaceful. I’ll miss the grosbeaks when they head north which should be any day now. I’ll have to wait until next fall or next spring for the migration to catch a glimpse of them again.

  • This is my first real attempt at digital manipulation of my photography (aside from just applying a basic filter, taking out red-eye, and such) using PhotoSuite3. Apparently, my husband has had it lying around for a few years because he bought it on clearance and never used it. I used a photo of my baby robin friend (who’s becoming friendlier every day), and layered a couple of other photos. I also used some blur and painting brushes….I honestly can’t say exactly what all I did. There was lots of experimenting. :) Since I’ve never really done this sort of thing before, I’d really appreciate any feedback on what I could do better next time. :-)
