I have been touched by the sale of my card Seeing Spots today – this shot was taken on the platform at Hornsby railway station here in Sydney … and was bought by Earthangel who originally had this to say about the image: I love it but I’m biased – I work for an Australia wide Blindness and Low Vision Agency and I love that you took this pic and won an award for this. Many people take tactile markings for granted but when you know people who have died or fallen down between a train and a platform due to blindness and the everyday difficulties they face – I love these things! This would be a great card for our organisation to sell. Well done love the colour contrast which is also what it’s all about. So I thought we’d create some strange spacey shapes in Photoshop. This is really easy to do – brushes, the smudge tool and a Hue/Sat Adj…
So I thought we’d create some strange spacey shapes in Photoshop. This is really easy to do – brushes, the smudge tool and a Hue/Sat Adjustment Layer. I have a photo to show you how to add a glow for the spacey shapes, I’ll add that later. Create a new file in Photoshop 600 X 800 @ 72dpi with a black b/ground. You need the black background so you can see what you are doing. You’re going to create the little spacey things first, each on a seperate layer, but remember that you will be able to use the Transform Tool to rotate, warp etc., Create a new layer above the b/ground layer by using the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette. Working on the transparent layer, go and grab a soft edged brush and pick a foreground colour that you like. I have chosen Green for mine. Check the little box at the bottom of the colour picker to ‘only web colours’ this will give you less colours to work with and will make the next process a bit easier. See image below. You can see where I have positioned the colour picker, and for the next colour choice I will move into the lighter Hue. You are going to click once with the chosen brush size and colour, then go to the colour picker and make the colour lighter, reduce the brush size by tapping the left bracket key once and click directly over the first stroke. Repeat this process till you’ve done about 4 in total, then you may want to move across to a lighter shade of your chosen colour and reduce the brush size a bit more to place a highlight. See image below Before you go on and use the Smudge Tool, you might like to duplicate the Orb type thing you just created and then turn it off using the little eyeball. This is in case you don’t like what you create – you won’t have to create the orb again. So go grab the Smudge Tool and in the top menu bar turn the strength down to about 85%. You can adjust this as need be – if you find it too strong, dial it down further. Keep the size of the Smudge Tool reasonably small and pull out some little tails, or something similar. See image below So you can see what I’ve done in the image above. Now you’re going to create a Scatter Brush in case you feel the need to add some trails behind it. Pick a soft edged round brush again and then go to Window>Brushes to bring up the Brushes palette. You can punch in the same numbers I have below if you like, or create one of your own. Once you have the brush as you like it, go to the bottom of the brushes palette and click on the ‘create a new brush’ icon, name the brush and save it. This will save you having to re-create the brush over and over again if you make more than one little shape thing. You may end up with something similar to the image below. Use the eraser tool to take away any of the scattering that you don’t like. You could also use a layer mask to do the same thing, just remember to switch to another brush before you paint of the mask. OK, now if you want to add some of these effects into another image it will look more realistic if there is a glow coming from the shapes onto the object. In this case it is a person. The image is brought to use by roxxannas at the Stock Exchange site and I have cropped the bottom and added more space at the top. Save the image, open it in Photoshop, drag it to the image you have been working on and place it below the background layer (solid black layer). You can turn the solid black layer on and off, it just makes it easier to create the shape against a black background. At this stage you will have to scale the shape and trails so, click on the shape layer and hold down the shift key, then click on the trails. Bring up the Transform Tool by using Ctrl + T and then scale, rotate, warp – do whatever you want. I added some more trails to my shape by reselecting my scattering brush that I made, reducing the size and making some extra trails. To make this more realistic, the woman would have some of the green colour reflected on her face and skin – lets go ahead and do that now. Select the layer with the woman on it, check that you don’t have your scatter brush selected, and then go into Quick Mask Mode by pressing the icon at the bottom of the side toolbar or pressing Q on the keyboard. I’ve clicked around the image where I thought a reflection of the green light might fall. You will be able to add and take away from this later, so don’t be overly fussy. Once you’ve finished press Q on the keyboard to exist quick mask mode, then go to Select>Inverse, to inverse the selection. Hold down the Alt key on the keyboard and click on the ying and yang symbol at the bottom of the layers palette (create new adjustment layer), choose Hue/Sat from the menu and when the dialogue box appears- check the box that says Use Previous Layer To Create Clipping Mask. The Hue/ Sat adjustment will appear, just change the Hue to match the colour of the shape and you can also fiddle with the Sat and Lightness if you want. See image below. You can make as many of these things as you like, just follow the same instructions for all of them. I’ve done another couple of shapes on the image below.

I am happy to announce that I’ve hit the 300 mark with my features in Redbubble since I joined here. I am amazed with this and want to thank each and every one of you for helping make that happen. While I was away on my long summer vacation, I encountered several features that I won’t announce, but since my return from B.C., Yukon, and Alaska, all of them, except one have been from that trip. Hey all! Omg omg, im nervous!!!! But i have a how-to to share! :D / Actually a girl from the photoclub told me about this tutorial site, and i want to tell everyone who doesnt know yet about this cool a** thingie! / Ta-DA!!! Its the soft focus effect!!! Not to confuse with diffuse glow filter. / You can see the before and afters in my portfolio. “The eye anatomy” and “soft focus” are the results. The “originals” are also somewhere there too. / Trust me, its dead easy. Even i can do it. Takes a minute to process an image. TRY IT!!!!! / So here we go. This is the illustrated step by step tutorial, but its in russian, but the commands are for the english photoshop, so not hard to understand i hope. http://www.interface.ru/home.asp?artId=18661 / Just in case its not clear, lemme translate it. / Aight, so: 1. Press CTRL+J to double the layer / 2. Press Shift+CTRL+U to turn it to black and white / 3. Go to Image>Adjustments>Posterize and set the level to about 7 / 4. Where the layers are, right click on the top layer and select Blending Options, then switch Blend Mode from Normal to Overlay / 5. Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian blur and play around with the pixel radius till u see what u like / 6. Voila!!!!!!! Here u go! Got a pic with lovely natural HOT HOT soft focus! Enjoy! See how easy???!!!

This is one of my oldest and dearest friends Diane. Her daughters story is below. This is one of many times Diane has gone to bat to protect the innocent. She is even going to school to become an attorney to help fight the system that has so many failures in polices and leaves children who desperately need a little extra effort out in the cold. Vonne The Story of One Little Girl vs. Edmond Oklahoma School Policies. / Thank You for visiting our web page. My name is Dianna and this story is about my little 12 year old daughter named Rachel. The school’s say they care about our children? My daughter attends Edmond Central Middle School, 6th grade. She has Asperger’s (autism), generalized convulsive seizure disorder, and asthma. The school had a recent outbreak of H1N1. 77 students were sent home and 38 were suspected of having the virus. I made her stay home as to not take a risk of her contracting the virus. I was picking up her school work, having her complete it and returning it back to school every week. They informed me that I needed a Dr.s note saying that she had this diagnosis and she was at high risk of developing flu-related complications if she contracted the virus. I did have a Dr. agree and he signed it. I went to the IEP ( individualized education plan) so we could change it to allow her to stay home and continue doing her work until the crisis passed. They refused to hear anything I had to say about H1N1. They refused to accept the Dr’s letter of recommendation of Rachel’s diagnosis and her high risk of dying if she contracted the virus. I presented evidence from the CDC that says” People at high risk for developing complications to the H1N1 flu are, Neurological disorders such as epilepsy and asthma. They recommended the educators to permit high risk students to stay home while the transmission is high in their community.”I showed them the CDC stated, “Healthy high risk students who are sent home out of precaution could take home curricular packets so that they don’t fall behind.”They gave ideas such as deliver content via conference calls, audio recordings, or teachers could call students and parents to provide lessons, checkins and tips to create a learning environment at home. I showed evidence of the CDC statement saying, “Two thirds of children who died from H1N1 virus had neurodevelopmental disabilities. Two thirds of the children who died had high risk medical conditions. Nearly all of them had an illnesses related to the nervous system, including epilepsy and other seizure disorders.”CDC highlights H1N1 risks saying, “Nearly 70% of these children who died had high risk medical conditions including asthma. I showed them what Sandy Garrett, the State Superintendent of Public Education recommended, “There are people who are more at risk for H1N1 complications and may want to consider staying home until it subsides. If a student opts to stay home because they are at high risk for contracting the virus, the IEP team can determine which services can be provided such as tutoring by phone, or the internet. I don’t even care about speech, or OT services; I just want her to be safe and have an education. The school said I either send her to school or I pull her out and home school her. They said for her to be allowed home I had to have a Dr. recommend that she needs to stay home. I pleaded with the Dr’s at Children’s Hospital to write me a letter saying they recommend it but they informed me they could not, because they would have to recommend it for everybody. They can only recommend staying home if you have the virus. I pleaded with the school saying if Rachel contracted this disease, she could die! 70% chance of dying! This isn’t the regular flu that we are dealing with; this flu is KILLING our children, especially our special needs children. I requested, Please let me continue picking up her work, I will even grade it too and return it so she doesn’t get behind, just until the number of cases subsides. They said they cannot tolerate the absences that were occurring because of this situation. They refused to work with us about Rachel. They said they cared about her and wanted what was best and being in school was best for her. Yet, they would rather her to stay home as suggested and not have an education than to work with a loving mom who just wants her daughter to survive this epidemic and not be another statistic like some children who we have already had to witness the unbearable pain that their loss has caused their families. I am a struggling mom who is in college to be an attorney so that I may give these children voices that will be heard, and now I have to find some sort of an education for my daughter. I don’t understand why even our President called this a national emergency and has made a big deal of the H1N1 virus, The CDC makes a big deal of the H1N1 virus, The State Superintendent makes a big deal of the H1N1 virus, and school officials act as if I am a hypochondriac because I make a big deal of the H1N1 virus. Why is it so wrong to want to keep my child well? Why doesn’t the school want to provide my child an education when I am willing to do all the work? Why is Sandy Garrett in charge but she doesn’t have a voice? Is it wrong to want Rachel to have an education but not at the expense of her life? My desire is to change the policy that states we need a Dr. to recommend that a child needs to stay home. We as parents have to provide many documents that prove our children’s disabilities so that they can be placed in Special Education or have IEP’s, Therefore, not everybody can afford to bounce from Dr. to Dr. to get a recommendation of a fact that has already been proven. This is time consuming and costly for parents to have to search for one Dr. that agrees with them. I will be putting up a petition on this sight to try and change this policy. Please help us in our quest for change, Please sign it so that the parent’s voices shall be heard. We should not have to choose between our children’s lives or our children’s education.
