I took this shot 10 years ago in 1998 on a walk that traversed the Western Arthurs in south-west Tasmania. Although I’d been hiking for years this hike redefined what a considered a hard hike to be and what spectacular scenery is, Tassie is just breathtaking. To give you an idea of its severity imagine spending 8 days traversing a ridgeline of a mountain range and then taking just one day to traverse back along the plains to regain your start point! It is also the place where the man who really inspired and defined a lot of my photographic aspirations and inspirations died. Peter Dombrovskis once said, “When you go out there you don’t get away from it all, you get back to it all. You come home to what is important. You come home to yourself”. Leaving his mortal coil in such a place for me seemed like the right thing in a bitter sweet kind of way. This particular shot was also one of the first where I felt that I began to approach that indefinable something that some work possess that just fills you with a sense of reverence, awe and inviolability of place. This view is one I have dreamed about for years after seeing it in an article I found on-line. The picture is taken off the rarely visited Mt Norgate (419m) overlooking Oberon Bay, then Norman, Pillar, Leonard and Tongue Points before getting to Shellback Island at Wilsons Promontory. When down amongst these points the fact that they line up is impossible to percieve how they do line up when up here is a true wonder to behold. The difficulty in getting to this spot was staggeringly hard involving two days of hard bushbashing and dangerous sea level traverses to cover less than 10km. Part of the journey can be seen on this You Tube clip . Incidentally this clip was of one of the easier traverses on which no-one actually got (very)wet (was so preoccupied with me and my companions doing the other ones safely I forgot to get my camera out, doh). Droving Sheep at Albert © / Vicki Ferrari Albert, New South Wales, Australia. This was taken in the township itself, opposite the Rabbit Trap Hotel. Taken using negs back in approximately 1987. This would have to be one of my favourite photographs! I have scanned the 8X12 print and done some minor touching up (typical neg dust and scratch) with photoshop but apart from that, this image is as it is! Hope you like this! Description…well its kinds obvious, its a Cod in a Cave ;-) Ok, its a Black Cod (Epinephelus daemelii) sorrounded by Eastern Pomfrets (Schuettea scalaripinnis) at Fish Rock Cave (http://www.southwestrocksdive.com.au/) off the Northern NSW Coast, Australia (http://tinyurl.com/a99zm4) Black Cod are classed as a “Vulnerable” species, they are not yet and hopefully will never be endangered. Follow the 2 links above and from one you will see a drawing of Fish Rock Cave. This dive site is one of the must-do dives not just of Australia but of the world! The classic Fish Rock photograph is similar to this one but with Grey Nurse Sharks so it was great to get this shot, particularly as the Black Cod are relatively shy and tend to run and hide when divers approach. Napayshni – (nah-PAY-shnee) is a Sioux name meaning “courageous and strong.” This is the first in a series. I plan to paint more animal images with Native American influences. Most of my inspiration for this piece came from Western movies and Native American music. The two movies that really had an impact on me growing up were “Little Big Man” with Dustin Hoffman and “Jeremiah Johnson” with Robert Redford. This painting was created using Painter and Photoshop. The final image is 24×30 and 300 dpi.

This shot was taken before the sun came up.. I went to check out the sunrise, but a storm had blown in and there was very little colour other than blue on the eastern facing coast.. so I headed over to the west coast and took some photos at Sugar Loaf Rock.. I’m very happy I did as I just love this shot! These were the actual colours captured by the camera, I haven’t photoshoped the colours at all, I’ve just adjusted the white balance down somewhat in order to exaggerate the blue that was already there.. love this shot! 3 minute exposure @ f10, ISO100 / ND400 + ND8 + ND4Grad All comments appreciated Paul Pichugin / http://www.paulmp.com.au
