Symmetry in nature, carpeted in green
The fog from the night before created an elaborate lacy frost on the morning branches. / While South Dakota winters may have their “bite”.... we are also blessed with many delicate and beautiful moments where nature reveals her artistic grace.
A friend and I road tripped through central South Dakota a few summers ago and got to chase this rainbow for about an hour down Highway 14. I pulled over to take this picture of the bow over a ripened wheat field with drops of rainwater still glistening on the points of the barbed wire fence.
This little Chipping Sparrow perches on a branch with its feathers puffed up as a defense against the icy blast of a surprise Spring blizzard. Shot in my backyard in the apple orchard. This image has sold as a framed print in Tigert Art Gallery of Vermillion, South Dakota as well as a matted print through RedBubble.
Deep In South Dakota …
Very beautiful fog this morning. This is just a shot of an old tractor shed in our yard. Was too pretty to walk past before leaving for work. / Vermillion, South Dakota Summer 2008 / /

This handsome Native American gentleman had such wise and warm eyes….taken at a wacipi (powwow) on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. This is an “as is” image, no enhancements, no manipulations. 35mm film, Fuji Astia. Taken with my trusty Nikon F3 camera.
‘Cankpe Opi’ is Lakota for Wounded Knee…..the site of a massacre which occurred on December 29, 1890 on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. On that bleak winter morning, the Sioux chief Big Foot and some 350 of his followers camped on the banks of Wounded Knee creek. They were surrounded by 500 US troops who were to disarm and arrest them. Sitting Bull had been murdered just days before. During a meeting to try and come to a truce, a shot from an unknown party was fired; this anonymous shot started the massacre. Indians ran to get their guns and defend themselves, but the surrounding army cut them all down. Over 300 Sioux were killed that day, and the massacre officially ended the Indian Wars but began the years of recrimination against the US government for their brutality toward the Indians. In the late 90’s, we visited the Wounded Knee Monument and it was one of the most chilling experiences I have ever had. Sitting there on the grass outside the fenced area which holds many gravesites, looking out over that valley, I could feel the strong Spirits of the Ancestors. I heard them singing and the beating of the drums permeated my being…I will never forget that feeling…. Today, sitting here in my home on this most beautiful winter’s day in the Rocky Mountains where I am safe and warm, I thought of that awful day and was compelled to create some art to honor those who died there that day in the snow covered hills of South Dakota….
Spearfish Canyon is one of the most scenic drives in South Dakota. The road to this location is closed in winter and only accessible by foot or by snowmobile. This is also the location of some of the final scenes of the movie “Dances With Wolves” featuring Kevin Costner.

My whole gang lined up along the fence near the barn and the colors and lines of their backs made such a pretty landscape I had to get this picture before they all headed back out to pasture. Front to back: Jack, Angel, Rock and Iris. “Ponies” by Jeffrey Bullock Somewhere out on the prairie / Is the greatest cowboy that’s ever been / And when he lays his hands upon the ponies / They shudder with an understanding skin And he says ponies / Now ponies don’t you worry / I have not come to steal your fire away / I want to fly with you across the sunrise / Discover what begins each shining day When the storm clouds in the west / Are quickly gathering / The ponies they run wild there / Before it rains You’ll see their sleek dark bodies / Brightly gleaming / You know the fire is flying through / Their brains And he says ponies / Now ponies don’t you worry / I have not come to steal your fire away / I want to fly with you across the sunrise / Discover what begins each shining day
