HDR image of a Steinway Piano at a friends’ home. She’s quite an accomplished artist herself, she painted the images behind the piano in Tuscany, Italy. It is almost a shame that this instument has not been played in years. This is a re-post of my Silent Night image, this one without the black border. I had taken this to work one day, matted and framed and sold three copies of it that day ….. Taken with Nikon D200 and Tokina 12-24mm lens. The statue “Sound II” stands silently in the water in the crypt under the Ancient Normal Cathedral in Winchester U.K. The whole gigantic building sits on watery foundations! This part of the Cathedral dates back to 1079 and now stands well under the local water table, therfore is often flooded / This is a three exposure HDR ( long exposures, it is dark) -1, 0, +1 . Taken from my “gorillapod” off the bottom step before the water. /

So I recently returned back to one of my favorite sites to photograph. This is the Whalehead Hunt Club in Currituck, North Carolina. Currituck Lighthouse is also visible on the left. This particular morning was just beautiful, very rare to have hardly any wind coming across Currituck Sound. The reflection turned out awesome, in my opinion. Image has been processed through Redynamix for the HDR look and also had the Orton effect applied. Best viewed in large. / Image made with tripod mounted Nikon D200, Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8, remote shutter release.

Sounds of Then / (This is Australia) I think I hear the sounds of then, / And people talking, / The scenes recalled, by minute movement, / And songs they fall, from the backing tape. / That certain texture,that certain smell, To lie in sweat, on familiar sheets, / In brick veneer on financed beds. / In a room, of silent hardiflex / That certain texture, that certain smell, / Brings home the heavy days, / Brings home the the night time swell, Out on the patio we’d sit, / And the humidity we’d breathe, / We’d watch the lightning crack over canefields / Laugh and think, this is Australia. The block is awkward – it faces west, / With long diagonals, sloping too. / And in the distance, through the heat haze, / In convoys of silence the cattle graze. / That certain texture, that certain beat, / Brings forth the night time heat. Hand-held camera on deck of a small ferry-boat, plus Mick was holding me steady on the boat as I shot. My first experience of snow, shot last year in New Zealand en route to Doubtful Sound. Doubtful Sound is the second largest of the 14 fiords in Fiordland National Park. This is an area naturally high in fresh water inflows (7.6 metres of rain falls annually). The area features generally steep terrain, much of it inaccessible on foot, that is heavily forested except for locations where surface rock exposures are extensive.Wildlife to be found in Doubtful Sound includes fur seals and penguins (Fiordland crested and blue), or even rare large whales (Southern Right, Humpback, Minke, Sperm and some Beaked Whales). The waters of Doubtful Sound are also home to an abundance of sea creatures, including many species of fish, starfish, sea anemones and corals. It is perhaps best known for its black coral trees which occur in unusually shallow water for what is normally a deep water species.Doubtful Sound is unusual in that it contains two distinct layers of water that scarcely mix. The top few meters is fresh water, fed from the high inflows from the surrounding mountains, and stained brown with tannins from the forest. Below this is a layer of cold, heavy, saline water from the sea. The dark tannins in the fresh water layer makes it difficult for light to penetrate. Thus, many deep-sea species will grow in the comparatively shallow depths of the Sound. (ref: Wik) Same shoot: /
