Saying you’re sorry can be a real trial for many of us. I for one have had my share of situations where even though I knew it was best to just say the magic word I just couldn’t do it. I could have defused the entire confrontation with a single word and yet I just couldn’t seem to force it out. Why does this happen to so many people including me? Pride? Stupidity? Either one will fit the bill I’m afraid. How many fights have I been in with my significant other or family member and all I had to do was apologize which would set everything to right but I just couldn’t make my mouth form that one simple word. How sad really. I’ve watched the members of my own family clash and then spend years waiting for the other one to “fess up” and graciously apologize for their misstep or misdeed. A repentant family member is as rare as a truthful politician which we all know that is a very uncommon and extraordinarily minute possibility. We’re taking Powerball odds here if you haven’t guessed that. We spend so much of our time being the one who’s RIGHT or the one who’s OWED an apology. Time slips buy while we stand on our self-made pedestal of righteousness with smugness in our hearts awaiting our due. The family and friends we’ve alienated with our conceit in being correct must go on in a much poorer fashion as do we. We have so few people in our lives we can truly count on and who truly love us and when we reduce that number we are genuinely deprived. It’s a sad fact that this is going to happen to each and every one of us over our lifetimes and that we all, all seem to react in precisely the same way. What do we gain really from being “right”? So far in my opinion, absolutely nothing and this is a poignant point indeed! I myself am still learning to correct those situations that I and others have created over the years that need resolution. It’s time for all of us to repair the bonds of family and friendship we have totally demolished in arrogance and self-importance. Call your brother or sister or best friend of twenty-five years and finally, finally say the words that are long overdue. You have no idea how much better you will feel afterwards and even if the other person totally declines your apology at least you’ve done your part. How many others can say that? Very few I tell you, very few. So pick up that phone, send a text or email, or sit down the old fashioned way and write a letter but do something and do it now. Time slips away so incredibly quickly and so do those meaningful people in our lives. Don’t be the one to say, “I just wish I had taken the time to say I was sorry for what had happened.” Think of one person in your life right now that needs you and who you need too and get back what you have both lost………………..
