To better VIEW THIS PHOTO select option VIEW LARGER The Northern Cardinal is one of the birds that is found in the Rouge. ..............................The male is bright red, with a black bill, while the female is grayish with a pink crest and bill. They are fairly common in Ontario and Quebec, and have been sighted in New Brunswick…............................. They frequent woodlands; but cardinals may be attracted to your back yards, with bird feeders well stocked with sunflower seeds. They are shy; yet curious; and the slightest motion or camera sound will cause them to take flight. Photographing them with any degree of success takes time. The image was taken on a gray RAINY overcast day; the result being saturated colors…..Bird was singing on the tree…while it was drizzling rain…I was covered with rain coat and hat with camera wrapped in the plastic….so the title came to me as SINGING IN THE RAIN by Gene Kelly…. / / To EMAIL ME please do so at myart4u@earthlink.net If you like WORK please visit my other pieces by clicking on any icon bellow / / WORK in this GALERY is COPYRIGHTED and solo owned by artist….DO NOT COPY …not for personal or comercial use……Any reproduction, modification, publication, transmission, transfer, or exploitation of any of the Content, whether in whole or in part, without express written permission is prohibited. This male Eastern bluebird is helping the female build a nest with straw. The outcome is always a marvel, a perfectly formed little teacup-shaped nest that is usually topped off with a tiny feather before egg-laying begins, one a day for five days. Then comes incubation time, hatching, tending the nestlings, and finally giving the babies freedom when they fledge. Here in southern Louisiana, the scenario is repeated three times with as many as 15 new baby bluebirds coming into the world in a pair’s spring/summer mating season. I never tire of watching the drama. This beautiful little male is making his home in my mother’s yard where there are doves, finches, titmice, chickadees, cardinals, sparrows, red-wing blackbirds, and Lord knows what else! They love it there!

This photo of an industrious little wren gathering nest building materials seemed to go well with the verse from Proverbs: Entrust your works to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.

These two little babes are brand new; they hatched only one day ago. Mother Cardinal spends most of the time in the nest, keeping them warm, while Father Cardinal makes visits to the nest with grub worms and all sorts of goodies for the ravenous chicks. One of the three eggs didn’t hatch so that means more food for this healthy pair. Any sign of activity at the nest and these two pop up with bills wide open, anticipation quivering in every molecule of their tiny bodies. I’d like to dedicate this image to Kimberly Palmer who wanted a peek at these two after I mentioned they had hatched.

This male painted bunting showed up several times this summer on my patio. A shy, elusive bird, it usually stays well hidden in thickets and woodlands, but its love of water brought it out of seclusion to my birdbath. I was blessed and privileged to view it and photograph it a handful of times this summer. Unfortunately, after this bird leaves the U.S. and heads to its wintering home southward, it is no longer protected by law and is subject to capture by those who sell buntings for a pretty price as caged birds. Consequently its numbers are diminishing. Called “nonpareil” by the French speaking Acadians of southern Louisiana, its nickname means “without parallel,” quite fitting as it is unique and unlike any other songbird.

A marvelous evolutionary adaptation: when baby birds are in the nest, they pass the feces in enclosed sacs, so as not to soil the nest. The parents will carry the sacs off some distance ( so as not to attract predators) and dispose of them. I waited over an hour for this shot.

This male bluebird is puffed up and proud as he shows his latest catch, a nice fat spider, in the ongoing hunt to find food for the nestlings. I am flabbergasted at the tireless activity of these tiny creatures and at their ability to hunt so skillfully and so swiftly. It takes all I have to keep up with them as they go back and forth from the nestbox to the field in search of food. Their labors will soon be rewarded with fledglings that successfully leave the nest and grace the world with their beauty and diligence.
