  • Challenge Winner – Birds in Flight, #12 Great Features Group There aren’t many things that bring me more joy than the companionship of the Black-Capped Chickadees that inhabit the woods behind our home. They visit us daily, and follow me along the trail whenever I go for a walk. I could be 3 property lines over and they will still follow me! It is not unusual for them to land on the end of my camera lens as I’m trying to frame a photo, or flutter around my legs, looking for their sunflower seeds. These little songbirds bring me more joy than I can ever truly express. What a gift they are! I would be filled with great sadness if they ever disappeared. They are a huge part of my passion for nature & wildlife photography and for capturing the beauty that surrounds us everywhere. This image was created by merging 2 of my chickadee in flight photos and then blending the sky together. Original images taken on my property in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada. / / / More Chickadee Photos / View Renee Dawson’s Gallery / Image included in the CHICKADEE CALENDAR

  • This is from a songbird series I just completed for a local gallery. One of my collectors just saw it and asked me to make it available as a print. How can I refuse? Hope you enjoy it. • Mr. and Mrs. Bluebird work as a team when feeding their babies. Both are avid hunters, going wherever the pickings can be found. In this case, Dad’s serving up cricket casserole while Mom’s whipping up some spider souffle. Babies aren’t particular; they eat just about anything. I love watching this pair appear at the nestbox with a wide variety of fare. Dad tends to serve things on a larger scale while Mom offers daintier portions. I saw him with multiple caterpillars dangling from his bill; quite a feat to catch and carry but he does it expertly! It’s very rare that both male and female land on a given spot together so I spliced two photos together in order to convey the idea of their concerted efforts on behalf of their little family.

  • Every time I visit at my mother’s house, her resident female bluebird goes directly to my car and admires herself in the rear view mirror of my car. I finally got a shot of the little queen. I applied some PS filters for this effect. I thought it might bring a smile to someone’s face. When there isn’t any vehicle parked in Mama’s driveway, the bluebird opts for the mirror on Daddy’s truck or any window pane she can find to study her beauty for hours on end.

  • My Website Original model image by my good friend Ademac / Landscape, post work and model: Me Rainforest Green Eight years ago this month / In a galaxy far, far away / I lay in a pool of blood / listening intently to a songbird calling out my name / directing my senses to another realm She was calling me away from where I lay / Sucking me away from a lucid pain / Transporting my soul / into her rainforest of lush green heaven / where spongy soft moss cushioned my filthy skin I bathed in her euphoric surrounds / gazing through fluffy white mist / and found myself mesmerised / by magical beams of sunlight / shining through my body, filling me with love Nearby, the trickle of a stream ran through my ears / cleansing my mind / With a purity so fine, it entered my blood stream / filtering poison until the residue dripped from my toes / seeping back into my safe green blanket of moss Her green paradise / cloaked me passionately, lovingly / protecting my worth / injecting prisms of warmth and trust / saving my soul With her thoughts through mine she said in time / whenever I see green my heart will survive / in the knowledge / that there will be no more pain / only love My brave new world could not last too long / and my songbird bid me farewell / but not before / she filled me with a sense of knowing / and of an amazing strength that would last me a lifetime As I opened my mind and returned to that room / his steely grey eyes / moved away from mine / Searing pain pierced through my spirit / and sheet lightning stabs cursed agonisingly inside Under a hot shower, far from my rainforest stream / I curled into a foetal ball / Stained red water splashed the walls / and far off somewhere in my senses / I could hear the songbirds call…. • Wildlife Rehabbers help each other during “baby season” As a licensed mammal rehabber, I could only assist with birds under supervision of the Federally licensed people. Baby birds must be fed every 30 minutes from dawn until dusk. That doesn’t leave time for much else. I have helped feed when the numbers became unmanagable and for short periods when rehabbers needed to leave the babies with me. This baby wren was self-feeding and about ready for the flight cage. Some older birds needed to be released to make room. Thanks to the rehabbers at Eastern WIldlife Center, Greenville, NC.

  • a gorgeous male goldfinch sits on a branch near the niger feeder, waiting his turn at the feeder. The male goldfinch will lose his bright ye;;ow plummage in early fall, turning to a greenish-yellow feather color. Come spring, he will once again don his golden feathers. camera used is Olympus E-3

  • A female eastern bluebird has a beak full of nesting material, in preparation to set up housekeeping in a nearby birdhouse. The male keeps a watchful eye out for any rival birds wanting to compete for the nesting site

  • a male cardinal, brilliant in red, has hgis big bright eyes on the lookout for predators. Cardinals love to sit in the pine tree to check the sunflower seed feeder for safety before coming in to feed. This affords an excellent opportunity for some candid, closeup shots. I love the way the pine needles frame the cardinal, and radiate out from him.
