More from the Lightscapes Set Poem: The Secret Place From: The Ice Cream Store. Toronto: Harper Collins Publishers, 1991. There’s a place I go, inside myself, / Where nobody else can be, / And none of my friends can tell it’s there— / Nobody knows but me. It’s hard to explain the way it feels, / Or even where I go. / It isn’t a place in time or space, / But once I’m there, I know. It’s tiny, it’s shiny, it can’t be seen, / But it’s big as the sky at night . . . / I try to explain and it hurts my brain, / But once I’m there, it’s right. There’s a place I know inside myself, / And it’s neither big nor small, / And whenever I go, it feels as though / I never left at all.

Forde Abbey, Near Chard, Somerset. A privately owned estate whose house and gardens are open to the public. I believe parts of the house date back to the13th century when it was a monastery/abbey. Well worth a visit, the gardens have something to offer year round but particularly towards the end of February/Early march where there are carpets of crocus and dwarf daffodills and later in the year the bog garden really comes to life. There is also an excellent plant centre open from March to October/November.

On the North Somerset Coast there is a small beach called Blue Anchor, we went for a picnic armed with goodies and a brilliant weather forecast. / This being England it was just a bit overcast and cool!!! These are the remains of the sea defences, and the crows are squabbling over bits of detritus. This is a not so brilliant photograph of acrylics on canvas

The last peek of the setting sun produced vivid pinks and oranges in the sky. A standard polariser would have destroyed the reds, but a combined polariser and warming filter was able to preserve them. The addition of a reverse ND stop grad filter evened out the exposure in the sky, while careful use of HDR returned the detail in the reflections to give the appearance of it being on fire. / Kilve Beach, in north Somerset, is an inspirational place for geologists and fossil hunters alike, it also makes for otherwordly photos and spectacular sunsets.

I really like this shot, but i ran out of patience and left this spot earlier than i should have, 20 mins later and back in the car i looked back and there was one of the best sunsets ever, it would have made an amazing photo, next time.

I revisited this place today in the hope of getting some shots of stormy weather, the weather here has been crap all week, i was hoping for a bit of lightening. I got there at the end of a storm and the sky cleared, i managed to catch this high cloud at sunset, not exactly what i wanted, but its nice enough
