  • Caught with Viral fever and resting at home, my temptation to work on doesn’t end. Presenting one more work on light :) This one I sighted few days back when I was li’l resting in Naval Civilian Housing Colony’s rest house. As I left the room way back I thought it might be a good !dea :)) I preferred to post B&W conversion for this. Sure I’m not gonna tempt for color. I have repocessed this image to add some LIGHT :) Hope everyone will enjoy!! Reprocessed in CS3 ( 07.05.2009 ). Equipment : Canon EOS 400D, Canon EF S 10 – 22mm lens. Hand held.

  • Saturday night was a very still warm night. Went out onto my favorite rockland armed with a bottle of red wine… a packet of chips and some light painting tools. This shot was my first serious effort at light painting… I have probably spent 2 months testing different lights to understand the quality of the light. This was the first time I have used them in anger. What was interesting about this shot is that I had totally previsualised it. I knew exactly the shot I wanted to capture and the end result is pretty close to what was in my mind for about 6 weeks. Enjoy / Brent

  • Advance notice of some price changes

Hello! As I’m sure you’re all aware – there’s a bit of an economic storm brewing at the moment. RedBubble is weathering the storm; below is the latest sales graph from 2 Feb 07 to 20 Nov 08 – things are still going in the right direction. However, we think it’s important to ‘shorten the sails’ and respond to the environment. This means we’re going to selectively increase prices on a few of our products. Namely t-shirts (in Australia), cards and mounted prints. The price changes will occur at about 1 a.m. GMT on 24 November – (i.e. at the end of this coming weekend – UK time). We’re providing this notice so you can take advantage of the old prices for one last weekend. T-shirts In Australia only t-shirts will increase in price to AUD25. RedBubble T-shirts are made in the USA and printed in Germany – and as all Australians will know the Australian dollar has lost about 25% of it’s value in the couple of months against the USD and EUR. We’ve ‘sucked up’ the currency loss – hoping that things would return to ‘normal’ but it doesn’t look like they will any time soon. So the price of a t-shirt will increase to AUD25 to allow RedBubble to make some money on t-shirt sales. Cards We’ve been making the cards at cost since they launched in 2007. Our thinking was to make a spectacular product and once they started selling like hot cakes we’d work out how to make them automatically. They’ve been selling like hot cakes pretty much since we first launched them, but despite our best efforts we haven’t been able to automate the production of the cards (they are all made by hand). So to date there’s been no return to RedBubble on any card sales. So that we can now make a return on cards the prices will be changed to: USD 3.32 / CAD 3.32 / EUR 2.27 / GBP 1.57 / AUD 3.50 Mounted prints We wanted a product that was positioned in between the price of a print and a framed print. We thought the mounted print would be that product – but the cost of gatorboard (the backing used in a mounted print) is very high. We’ve essentially been selling the mounted prints at cost for the last year so that it could occupy this mid price point while we tried to find a replacement for gatorboard with all the same high quality characteristics (light and strong). However, we haven’t been able to find a replacement. So we’re looking to introduce the following new pricing for mounted prints to enable us to make a return on mounted prints. __ USD EUR GBP AUD CAD Small 38.00 26.00 18.00 40.00 38.00 Medium 52.25 35.75 24.75 55.00 52.25 Large 71.25 48.75 33.75 75.00 71.25 We’ll still keep working on a process to automate the production of cards or a better way of mounting prints. And if we do improve our production arrangements we’ll look to pass this cost saving back to the community. These prices rises will enable RedBubble to remain financially strong … and to pay the salaries of these lovely people who are working hard to make RedBubble a better site and to help you share and sell your work: We make these changes with the greatest of reluctance, but we do think it’s essential to keep RedBubble financially strong. Ciao, Peter PS – Just a reminder that the price of Framed prints, Canvas Prints, Calendars, Laminated Prints are all unaffected by these price changes.

  • Some hints on shooting at the beach

I typed all this out for Ben, who asked for some help, since he doesn’t live near any beach, and didn’t want to waste his time when he finally made the long trek. Thought others might appreciate the info. I use my Canon 5D with Lee ND grads, mostly the darkest ones, for sunrise. I’ve never tried to shoot the ocean much after an hour or so after sunrise, and not been all that successful, unless it’s a cloudy day. You’ll need a tripod and cable release. The tripod just needs to be stable, and the cable release working. Then I set my camera on AV and start shooting with aperture at around f/8 or so while it’s dark, and closing it down as the light gets stronger, with ISO mostly 50….. There’s no formula I use, other than using AEB, to see if I can snag one that gets the sky right, then I look for the one with the right wave patterns. Sometimes I combine the two, sometimes I run them through photomatix. Sometimes they’re perfect. I use my 16-35mm nearly ALL the time when shooting seascapes, very rarely I’ve used the 70-200, and that’s only if there’s a detail that’s worth getting, like the shipwreck or some waterfalls over rocks from the surf…. Here the light is generally best till around 20mins after the sun goes down, or 30 mins before the sun comes up. If you have clouds, wait longer after sunset….you’ll probably get better colours. If you have clouds in the morning, you might be able to shoot longer after the sun comes up too, especially if the light breaks through…. The IR filter can come in handy once the light is stronger….here in Qld we have strong light for 12 hours a day or more, even in winter….IR is a blessing! I’ve never used a yellow filter….and wide angle with polarisers just don’t give good results, imho. Just keep checking your screen and moving around for different viewpoints. Everything will depend on how much water movement you prefer. This is a case of personal taste, and with practise you will work that out. Setting your camera on AV and using AEB will give you the three different exposures to see which works best, then you just adjust your aperture to slow it down, or speed it up….or add more filters…the darker it is, the longer the exposure…. Be careful of getting too close to the waves, and watch out for slippery rocks, they can be extremely dangerous! Here the tide surges more dangerously an hour before high tide. Make sure of tide times before you go, and be certain you have a way to escape from the beach if the tide is coming up….Rogue waves can, and do cause problems….try to go with someone who has local knowledge…. Wash your tripod off when you leave the beach, and again when you get home. Other than that, have fun!

  • That Can Only Be Seen Through the Cracks… All images used in this composite taken with Sony Alpha 350, various lenses, and are mine. Currently (8.11.09) 935 views Separate layers of images of broken glass using various blending modes, individual ‘shards’ of glass from different images layered on top to attempt to give the appearance of their sharp edges ‘threatening’ the viewer. The image of the person layered underneath and ‘stretched’ so that the eyes matched the gaps in the cracks. / I experimented with desaturating the colour in this image, but decided that leaving colour ‘as is’ from the various layers created more impact. • This is a collaborate work with the very talented writer Anna-Marie Docherty aka Anaisnais. / I’ve read her beautiful poem and here is the result . Some new tomorrow / by Anaisnais In death we departed, / you knew your time had come. / Your body rose to meet last breath, / then sunk again, to hold / forever’s peace within your chest. Such frozen coldness set your bones, / grey/blue lips, syanosis undertones; / and what for me to do next, / but search your soul, / which lies not in your breast? Confused, perplexed, / I know you do not sleep; / but watch the world go by. / Not in the casket buried 6 foot deep, / yet in my heart and mind. A trace of sadness, / not understanding yet; / and nothing to lose. / So mournful these tears I cry, / unseen under the mist of time. Saying Goodbye the next life’s waiting, / I see the road back in different light. / Wavering unsafe over the horizon, / I conjure dream like wraiths; / sinister and heavy against the spirits. Where memories leap / you will not die, / for patiently you’ll wait; / and until then I know you’ll stand / like sentinal at gate. I know you keep a watch o’er us, / protect from harm / all those you loved. / Through long and lonely hours I sigh, / remembering long lost days gone by. You keep me warm / and comfort me in ways / Only you could ever know how / Until we meet again some day / some bright new tomorrow.
